All of us, I'm sure, want to do more, feel better, and live longer. However, discomfort of any kind, such as having dry and sensitive skin, has an impact on our quality of life such that we become unable to fully embrace living life to the fullest

happy, confident ladies
Any woman reading this would probably agree that on good skin days, we are naturally more confident about ourselves. When we love how our skin looks and feels, it's easier to go out and enjoy ourselves while meeting other people, making new connections, and simply taking on the world.

Unfortunately, during those bad days when we our skin feels dry, red, and itchy, we feel a lot of discomfort and are easily irritated. And when our confidence level drops, we also feel more vulnerable.

women feel more confident during good skin days
According to GlaxoSmithKline's (GSK) 2014 Skin Health Asia Pacific Consumer Report, more than 50% of women across Asia experienced sensitive face and body skin in the past year. The research further revealed that despite the condition, only one out of two women will visit a skincare professional. Respectively, 71% and 61% of Filipino women also have sensitive face and body skin.

This July, GSK's Consumer Healthcare Division aims to help Filinas and all women across Asia to be free from dry and sensitive skin through Physiogel, its flagship skin health brand, by freeing the strength in sensitivity.

event host Bianca Valerio with GSK's Justin Lladoc
Justin Alejandro Lladoc, GSK Skin Health Senior Product Manager, described sensitivity as a source of strength for women, not a weakness to be hidden away. "This powerful consumer insight compels Physiogel to passionately advocate the #FreeInMySkin Movement in 2015. The Movement also coincides with the debut of the NEW Physiogel Daily Moisture Therapy line," he revealed during the launch hosted by Bianca Valerio and held at Shangri-La Hotel, Makati last July 15.

It starts with self-discovery. We, ladies, should be more aware of ourselves so we can uncover our full potential. Physioge's FIMS Movement challenges Filipinas to look past our skin insecurities so we can fulfills those dreams we have always wanted to achieve.

I would have liked to be out and about, but a little thought would always be at the back of my mind wondering if my skin would be an issue. I was not free to do what I wanted to do!" Now, she proudly shares the continuation of her journey towards being completely free in her skin. "And I'm ready for more!" declared Patti.

Ultherapy: Stimulating Natural Youthful Skin Through the Beauty of Sound

It's inevitable … the years added to our lives will show on our faces sooner or later depending on various factors like genes, environment, diet, etc. At a certain age, people will notice changes like skin that starts to sag, cheeks that begin to sink, and chin lines that suddenly seems to widen. When laxity first occur on the forehead, it will eventually lead to eyebrow descent, excess skin, or hooding on the eyelids such that you'll appear less open-eyed, among other obvious physical changes.

physical changes brought about by aging
Merz Aesthetics offers a solution to all these changes related to aging via an effective, non-invasive, and sound solution. Merz held a press conference recently at Le Jardin in Bonifacio Global City to introduce Ultherapy, a non-surgical, skin lifting procedure that uses tried and true ultrasound energy.

Dr. Peter Peng, a Taiwanese dermatologist, shared that Ulthera is one of his favorite devices because it is the only device that is U.S. FDA-approved for "lifting" the skin on the neck, brow, and under the chin. "It uses micro-focused ultrasound and is effective and safe. You get lasting results with just one treatment," he described adding that Ulthera has a "deep see" visualization system that enables doctors to literally see what areas they are treating via a monitor.

(from left) Dr. Elepano, Dr. Teo, Dr. Peng, and Dr. Viceral
"You are not doing it blind. We can even avoid bones. It's very precise," agreed Dr. Z Teo, a Singapore-based dermatologist who has patients getting Ultherapy for the past six years. "I zero in the treatment where it's needed," he pointed out. When asked about downtime after treatment, he said patients who get a lot of "shots" might feel their skin to be a bit bloated, or there will be some swelling. He assured, "As you wake up everyday, it gets better. By the fourth week, you'll definitely see lifting. There's no redness and no peeling. Pain is subjective and can be managed."

Psychiatrist Dr. Ron Elepano affirmed that when a person feels beautiful, he/she tends to be more confident. "There is scientific basis to looking good. Most depressed patients look tired and sad. Something as simple as Ultherapy can lift and alleviate depressive symptoms," he explained. "Aesthetic medicine can be tailor-fitted to patients and Merz has different offerings to choose from."

before and after 150 days

Dr. Venzo Viceral, Head of Medical and Regulatory Affairs of Merz Philippines Healthcare Inc., reiterated that they have options to help people look and feel better about themselves through holistic rejuvenation. "Ulthera is just one of the products we offer. It complements other treatments within the Merz Aesthetics Portfolio."

Here are some statistics since the Ulthera System was launched six years ago: 500,000+ patients treated globally, 3,000+ systems sold globally, 100+ patients (filed, published, or issued), 50+ clinical studies, 40+ published peer-reviewed papers, and the one and only U.S. FDA-cleared, non-invasive lift.

the doctors with event host Angel Jacob
According to the press con's resource persons, Ultherapy is the next evolution in aesthetic science. Its focused ultrasound energy is delivered non-invasively to heat deep tissue without affecting the skin's surface. The heat then triggers the body's natural response mechanism, which results in rejuvenating weakened collagen and supplementing it with fresh, new ones.

Ultherapy is a single 60-90 minute procedure that bridges the gap between injectables and surgery. It is skin color independent and there are no pre- or post-treatment skin care requirements. Results gradually build over two to three months and can continue to improve up to six months post-procedure. Noticeable results can last for one year or more.

Join the Australian Grass-Fed Beef Promo and Win P5,000 Dining Privileges or Round Trip Tickets for Two to Australia!

Many of us love to go dining out with family and friends. Wouldn't it be great if the meal you just had could give you a chance to win nice prizes?

peppered Australian grassfed beef tenderloin
Foodies all over Metro Manila are in for a culinary experience as more than 35 top restaurants participate in the first-ever Australian Grass-Fed Beef promotion. These dining establishments will showcase a wide variety of dishes that uses Australian grass-fed beef, which have been raised exclusively on natural pastures.

Choose from a wide variety of dishes using customized menus carefully prepared by some of the top chefs in the city. Ordering these may get you a chance to win P5,000 dining privileges or round-trip tickets for two to Australia via Qantas Airways. This promotion, jointly presented by the Australian Trade Commission (Austrade), Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA), and the State of Victoria, is ongoing until August 23, 2015.

Anthony Weymouth, Austrade Senior Trade Commissioner, confirmed that there is a growing demand for quality beef in the Philippines, "and this promotion reiterates the fact that Australia is in the best position to provide this, as Australia produces premium quality beef that suits the Filipino taste and budget."

I agree with Mr. Weymouth because I have been buying and cooking different cuts of Australian beef in the past year for my family. The cost is not as high as I previously expected imported beef to be and the meat is way more tender than any of the local beef I've bought in the past. (Read my other blog posts on Aussie beef, here.)

Chef Jessie easily cutting a thick but very tender cut of Aussie beef
According to MLA Country Manager Paul Perez, "the promotion reinforces Australia's position as the best place to raise beef cattle as its climate and environment provides the perfect growing conditions to raise premium beef."

In Australia, 97% of cattle are located in grass-fed environments. They are described as "grass-fed,""pasture-fed," or "free range." Kindly note though that this is not the same as "organic." Additionally, livestock that graze on pastures absorb a pigment from the grass called carotene, which results in fat that has a yellowish tone but this has no effect on quality.

What food lovers need to know is that Australian grass-fed beef is seen as an important component to a healthy diet because it is naturally low in fat and cholesterol, while offering a high level of Omega 3 fatty acids known to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of certain cancers.

Recently, I got to dine on several flavorful dishes made with Australian grass-fed beef in four restaurants located in Makati. I visited Chef Jessie Rockwell Club, People's Palace in Greenbelt, Carpaccio Ristorante Italiano in Yakal St., and Prime 101 in Pasong Tamo. All of them served awesome food with unbelievably tender and flavorful Aussie beef. I'll be uploading a separate blog post about the individual, mouthwatering dishes we tried in each establishment and share with you my most recommended ones. Please stay tuned for that.

Meanwhile, aside from the four places I've already mentioned, please make sure to check out the other participating restaurants and their branches in various locations: A Steakhouse at Acacia Hotel, Arya, Blackbird, Casa Roces, Chef Jessie Top of the Citi, Chef Jessie Revolving 100, Chesa Bianca, Cravings, Cyma, Epicurious, Ilustrado, Kitchen 1B, Lucia Ristorante, One Way, Sala, Sala Bistro, The Blackboard, The Breakfast Table, The True Grill, The Urban Farm, and The Wholesome Table.

Cut-off periods per week ends every Sunday at 10PM. Weekly draws are held every Tuesday where five winners are chosen weekly for eight weeks to win P5,000 worth of dining privileges while one grand winner, to be drawn on August 25, gets to receive two roundtrip tickets to Australia courtesy of Qantas Airways.

It is always a pleasure to dine on dishes that have both the components of a good meal: delicious tastes and premium quality ingredients. I am fortunate to discover new and awesome dishes in four Makati-based restaurants serving Australian Grass-Fed Beef.

beef tartare to be wrapped in sisho leaves and nori
Last Tuesday, I started my culinary adventure at Chef Jessie Rockwell Club where we were served really flavorful Australian beef dishes that I'd highly recommend you also check out. For starters, we had Australian Grass-Fed Cape Grim Beef Tartare with Sisho and Nori

beef tartare ready to wrap and eat!
It's a bit spicy but very delicious. The various ingredients (including corniks!) gave it a lot of texture, reminding me of Korean ssam wraps.

Next, we enjoyed the Grilled Peppered Australian Grass-Fed Beef Tenderloin Steak served with double-baked potato and raw papaya. The meat is very tender and the spicy sauce is savory.

peppered beef tenderloin steak

Our third dish was Brochette of Grilled Australian Grass-Fed Cape Grim Sirloin Steak in licorice and carrot puree. It was served with salad greens and a lovely-tasting vinaigrette. I was delighted to see my favorite local edible fern, pako, used in the salad.

brochette
When the waiter brought out the Australian Grass-Fed Beef Short Ribs, my companions and I wondered how tender the chunky cut of beef is and were amazed when Chef Jessie Sincioco herself easily made several slices. Find her photo doing that, here. This dish has a cabernet barbecue sauce, served with homemade mashed potatoes and sautéed vegetables in season.

short ribs
Our last dish was Grilled Australian Grass-Fed Beef Tenderloin in Wild Mushroom Ragout Sauce served with country style potatoes and green salad. Again, the good quality of the meat and the way the dish was cooked would make any diner appreciate what's on the table.

Next stop on the food trail was at the Thai restaurant People's Palace in Greenbelt. Their Australian Grass-Fed Beef Satay Papaya + Chili + Lime Salad is a different take on the usual meat on barbecue sticks Filipinos are used to. The flavors are interesting and the meat is very easy to chew.

The Green Curry of Australian Grass-Fed Beef Top Blade Eggplant + Longbeans + Baby Corn made me crave for rice. They are a good combination for a any hungry diner who loves spicy food!

Before we, foodies, left People's Palace, we had a group shot with the chef to express our compliments.

our group of foodies after dining at People's Palace
The next day, I once again joined the food crawl at Carpaccio Ristorante Italiano located in Yakal St. They, too, serve very delicious dishes made with very tender Australian Grass-Fed Beef. It was hard to choose a favorite because everything was really good so let me just share what we had:

dishes at Carpaccio also include must-try Aussie lamb (top left photo)
Carpaccio was made of tenderloin, sea salt, pepper, extra virgin olive oil, fennel, green asparagus, rocket lettuce, and honey tomato.

Seared Oyster Blade Alla Capo had garlic, herb and chili marinated oyster blade, and red wine reduction on vegetable saffron risotto.

grilled rib eye
Grilled Rib Eye featured calamata olive butter, red win glace, cherry tomato confit, sage gnocchi, and parmesan cheese.

Grilled Striploin had the very intriguing anchovies butter, potato-cabbage gratin, and crispy vegetable and tomato basil salad.

grilled tenderloin
Grilled Tenderloin was made with garlic herb butter, red wine glade, green asparagus, and tomato and fontina mash. I can honestly say you can order any or all of these dishes at Carpaccio and you'll definitely end your meal with a smile.

The fourth restaurant I got to visit was Prime 101 in Pasong Tamo. It was a pleasant surprise to find Chef Marco Legasto there because I thoroughly enjoyed his creations when I dined at Twenty Two Jupiter last November.

soup to warm the tummy
This time, he and his staff served us with a lip-smacking tomato soup in a cute cup before we tried the Australian Grass-Fed Beef Tartare 101. Aside from the delicious one I had at Chef Jessie's, I've tried tartare before in another restaurant in this same presentation and found it bland.

beef tartare
Surprisingly, Prime 101's tartare was made delicious by the various elements included in the dish such as the egg yolk, capers, and sauce.

The Braised Grass-Fed Sirloin in Iberico Chorizo and Saffron was likewise flavorful.

So was the Pinnacle Grass-Fed Ribeye Cooked in Prime 101's Signature Way

notice how the cherry tomatoes were presented, I thought they were siomai in red wrapper!

We ended our hearty meal with a slice of pudding that was a perfect conclusion to the very nice dinner.

Apart from it's sumptuous Australian beef dishes What's doubly interesting about Prime 101 is that there are furniture and paintings for sale displayed inside the restaurant. I think that's a great way to showcase beautiful pieces to customers who choose to dine on quality food.

If this post got your stomach rumbling and craving for the dishes I described, please make sure to also read my post about the Australian Grass-Fed Beef Promotion where you can win P5,000 worth of dining privileges or a trip for two to Australia via Qantas Airways! There, you'll also find the names of other restaurants included in the promo.

If you want to read more food reviews about Australian Grass-Fed Beef dishes, do visit my husband's posts here and here because he went to five other restaurants and also enjoyed food tripping.

Kids need a healthy body and mind. Those are two of the best gifts you can give a child. Of course, let's also not forget the value of a good education because that will further ensure a brighter future

photo credit: MilkPEP (Milk Production Education Program)
Last July 22, New Birch Tree Fortified and the Department of Education launched an advocacy called "Me and My Milk" at the Department of Education Complex's Bulwagan ng Karunungan in Pasig City. The campaign encourages children to drink milk at home and in school.

Present during the event were DepEd Undersecretary Dina Ocampo, regional directors and other key officials of the Department as well as executives of Century Pacific Food Inc. and Marylindbert International

"We may gotten older, but we remain passionate about education," said Erlinda Legaspi, President and CEO of Marylindbert, who expressed full support for the project.

Edwin Africa, VP and General Manager of Snow Mountain Dairy Corp., started his talk with a quote from Kofi Annan: "Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family."

Birch Tree brand ambassadors Richard Yap and Mutya Urquia
He shared that dairy consumption in the Philippines is lower than in other Asian countries. "We are privileged to partner with DepEd. We hope to contribute in the development of a strong citizenship [through the promotion of] milk drinking."

Mr. Africa explained that the Me and My Milk program will not only make sure to give young students milk during recess, they will also bring educational materials to benefit educators, parents, and students. Initially, the advocacy will be brought to the following areas in Luzon: National Capital Region (NCR), Central Luzon (Region 3), Calabarzon (Region 4A), and Ilocos (Region 1).

Me and My Milk aims to encourage parents to see to it that their kids drink at least two glasses of milk a day. This is very possible with the New Birch Tree Fortified because it is not only a great tasting healthy drink, it is also made affordable so that moms can continue their children's milk drinking habit at home.

Usec. Dina Ocampo pointed out, "Encouraging mothers to let their kids drink milk instead of sugary or caffeine-filled beverages will help ensure that these children grow up to be productive and responsible citizens."

milk is a nutritionally loaded food drink
Indeed, a healthy body and mind are crucial to a child's future. As such, it is essential for kids to start early in getting the proper nutrition through the food that they it. One way to guarantee this is to let them drink milk regularly while they are young.

Milk is loaded with various nutrients and contains Calcium, Phosphorus, Magnesium, and Protein that are needed for proper growth and development of teeth and bones. Apart from these, New Birch Tree Fortified is the only milk brand with FibroBoost, a unique set of nutrients fortified with Zinc, Vitamin C, and Iron. It is further enhanced with Inulin Fiber that's proven to help the body absorb up to 18% more calcium.

"Taking Calcium is not enough. We should ensure that it is properly absorbed by the body to reap its optimum benefits," added Leah Macalincag, Senior Product Manager of Birch Tree milk. "And because New Birch Tree Fortified has a great taste, we are positive that kids will continue to drink this milk."

"We hope we can make a dent in the fight against malnutrition," affirmed Christopher Po, CEO of Century Pacific Group.

education and milk advocates
The advocacy launch was made more lively by the presence of Birch Tree Fortified brand ambassadors Richard Yap and Mutya Urquia who played father and daughter in the highly popular TV series Be Careful With My Heart . The actor, entrepreneur, father, and husband revealed that part of his routine to sustain him with his different roles is a healthy diet, regular exercise, and drinking milk.

"When I was a kid, I drank milk every day, once during breakfast and once before bed time. I give credit to my parents for instilling [my] milk-drinking habit, which I apply until today," said Yap. "Milk equips me with essential nutrients to help sustain my busy schedule."

This father of two revealed that he actually grew up drinking Birch Tree because it was the only milk he liked. "I encourage all parents to start your kids young with milk drinking. Now, there's new Birch Tree Fortified Milk. It tastes great and is affordable. Nutrition is made accessible with this new product."

For those who need to be reminded, there are a lot of health benefits from drinking milk: increased bone strength, smoother skin, stronger immune system, prevention of illnesses such as hypertension, obesity, and osteoporosis.

New Birch Tree Fortified is manufactured by Snow Mountain Dairy Corp., a subsidiary of Century Pacific Food Inc. It also carries brands such as Angel Evaporada, Angel Condensada, Home Price Sinigang Mix, and Kaffe de Oro coffee, among others. New Birch Tree Fortified is now available at leading supermarkets, groceries, and market stalls nationwide.

SkinWhite Captivate Council Gives Back to Communities as well as Empowers Teens

We’ve often heard it said that being a truly beautiful person should be based more on what’s inside. I believe that and would personally like to see more young Filipinas not only looking good physically, but also feeling and doing good for others.

SkinWhite aims to do just that – to give our young ladies the tools they need to improve who they are both inside and out. The brand’s campaign called #BetterMe was launched specifically to inspire and empower teens.  Actress and SkinWhite Ambassador, Kim Chiu, shared how #BetterMe makes her and other girls look at the brighter side of life.

A few months ago, SkinWhite Captivate Council girls mingled with 20 girls from Barangay Tagalag, the second poorest barangay in Valenzuela City. There, they got to know each other’s stories and share about their lives.

Singer KA Antonio was invited to hold a Personality Development Seminar where she gave tips on staying confident and loving one’s unique qualities. She also highlighted why good grooming is important and how the girls can make themselves feel beautiful with the help of SkinWhite products like lotion, soap, deodorant, cream, and face cream powder. To make it easier for the girls to do just that, SkinWhite’s Marketing and Brand Activation Group prepared and distributed goodie bags to the attendees.

The #BetterMe movement, launched in 2013, chose the second batch of the Captivate Council from approximately 500 aspiring teens from some of the most prestigious college campuses in the country. Only 25 girls were handpicked based on their school accomplishments and their ability to inspire others with their go-getting and stay-confident attitude.

Aside from fashion and beauty makeovers, multi-media exposure, and fun events, SkinWhite included outreach activities and fitness parties to have a more holistic approach in helping the girls grasp the #BetterMe concept. The goal is for members of the SkinWhite’s Captivate Council to lead by example as it is not just about looking good on the outside, but feeling and doing good, too.

These days, a lot of teens get lost in social media drama or become engulfed in their #fomo (fear of missing out). Through the #BetterMe campaign the Captivate Council, SkinWhite wants to remind these girls about what really matters and allow them to develop confidence so they can be kinder to themselves and to others, too.

I am glad that SkinWhite’s advocacy also focuses on giving back to the community because young, privileged girls need to realize that there’s a bigger world out there outside their comfort zones. Exposing them to realities such as poverty being experienced by other girls their age will not only help them appreciate what they have, but also awaken in them the desire to make a difference.

It is also important to make young ladies realize how essential it is to take care of themselves, especially when they’re going through tough times. Truly, when you make time to make yourself feel good, you’ll find out you also have enough energy left to lift others up.

Having a bad skin day? Apply SkinWhite Advanced PowerWhitening Lotion! It uses an exclusive Advanced Tripower Technology and contains a Vitanourish formula spiked with Vitamins B3, B5, and E to give skin intense moisturization. Not only can it instantly whiten the skin, it also has SPF20 to help protect skin from UV rays and further darkening.

Although I regularly do practice runs during late afternoons, I still get exposed to the sun, which results to skin darkening. After taking a shower, I apply SkinWhite lotion to even out my skin tone. In the photo below, you can see the slight difference between my untreated left arm vs. my right arm with SkinWhite. Aside from its whitening benefits, I love this lotion’s very nice fragrance!

SkinWhite Advanced PowerWhitening Lotion is available in 50ml (P71.00), 75ml (P123.25), and 200 ml (P235.00) bottles.

Enjoy a Better Quality of Life by Getting the Right Nutrition and Maintaining Muscle Health

"Strength is essential to enjoy life as we age. It is relevant to the growing Filipino aging population" said Dr. Jose Rodolfo Dimaano Jr., Abbott Medical Director, during a media event for Ensure. "[Thus,] we have to maintain a good level of strength for better quality of life."Did you know that by 2040, 1/4 of the Philippine population will be composed of people age 50 and up? Before we reach that age, we must already do something about not losing our strength!

in pursuit of a better quality of life
Loss of strength, according to a local survey, is a concern among Filipinos age 40 and up. Factors that affect this include:
  • Lack of physical activities (7 out of 10 adults with normal BMI consumer only 60% or less of their required food intake)
  • Nutritional gaps that reduce muscle function affecting performance of daily activities like walking and climbing stairs (food intake below 75% of estimated requirement puts people at risk of malnutrition)
  • Progressive muscle mass loss (there's an 8% loss for each decade among adults between the ages of 40 and 70), which reduces strength and physical performance
how many squats can you do in 30 seconds? do that in 3 sets! :p
"Eighty percent of our health status depends on the food we eat," revealed Dr. Dimaano. He shared about tests performed on adults where it was found out that those with nutrition gaps had lower performance scores compared to age-matched norm. For instance, they are five times slower to step up and down in a ten-step test.

Dr. Dimaano and Edu Manzano
"Abbott is committed to helping people live more active, healthier lives," shared Dr. Dimaano who gave details on their advocacy campaign to fight nutrition gaps. There will be 8,700 activation days at select drug stores and supermarkets nationwide for the Ensure Stay Strong Grip Strength Challenge. This is a free assessment on strength and muscle mass that aims to reach over 200,000 aging adults nationwide. The activity will measure the individual's grip strength and muscle mass levels with free hand grip strength and muscle mass tests.

save the date and bring your lolos and lolas to this event on September 13!
"The consequences of having nutrition gaps and decreased physical performance due to muscle mass loss in older adults can be debilitating. Being aware of your muscle mass levels and gaps in nutrition can prompt you to take charge of your health by maintaining a balanced diet and an active lifestyle," he encouraged. "Resistance exercise along with a complete and balanced oral nutrition such as Ensure can help improve strength. Complete and balanced oral nutrition supplements are shown to improve hand grip strength within 8 weeks of intake."

you'll need grip strength to carry these kettle bells!
Veteran actor, TV personality, and businessman Edu Manzano, likewise believes that people should prepare themselves well before retirement by leading a healthy lifestyle while they are still young. "I may be in my late 50s, but my body feels a lot younger. I observe a strict, balanced diet, a regular fitness routine and surround myself with a regular dose of green space. These habits help me keep up with the demands of my career and personal life," he described.

the kettle bells challenge
"I'm exercising. I've gone back to working out more and found myself doing more than what I was doing in the past. It's time all of us do a lifestyle change to live better lives," added Manzano. "I take Ensure three times a day. The chocolate flavor is my favorite. I love that I can take Ensure anywhere I go. It's very convenient."

can you guess what you have to do with these ropes?
To inspire media guests to live healthier lives, we were given workout uniforms and challenged to join a cross fit training at SPARTA in Pioneer, Mandaluyong. It was my first time to do this kind of activity and found that, despite my increased endurance thanks to running, there are still a lot of muscle groups I need to develop.

great workout for the arms!
Each of the five stations had a challenging activity. We were made to do planking, pushups, squats, crawling (without our knees touching the floor), carrying kettle bells, and exercising with ropes. My verdict? Crossfit is fun especially when you do it with friends. I think all of us woke up sore in various body parts the next morning but it was the kind of pain that you know is good for you.

how long can you stay in this planking position?
Apart from drinking Ensure, I am personally glad to have learned more techniques to keeping my body fit. As proof of this new found enthusiasm, I already bought a yoga mat so I can also exercise more at home :)

WeatherPhilippines Mobile App: Providing Accurate Forecasts Through Localized Reports

Do you usually leave the house wondering whether you should bring your umbrella and jacket with you, or not? How about making decisions to wear or not to wear waterproof shoes? That is often my dilemma. I dislike being caught off guard by the weather so I usually am prepared for the worst, despite the weight added to my already heavy shoulder bag.

making use of event props for a fun photo op
You see, I've personally experienced finding myself under a sudden downpour on those few days I chose not to bring an umbrella or wear more sensible shoes. And that annoys me greatly. So imagine how glad I was to discover a mobile app that helps me check the weather in my area, before I leave home, and the weather in any place I'm supposed to go to!

traveling is more fun when you're prepared for the weather
According to WeatherPhilippines, makers of the very useful app, there is a tendency for people to over-prepare or under-prepare due to the lack of accurate weather information. Companies cancel work and lose money, and vacation trips get ruined only for a predicted bad day to end up with fair weather. This lack of accurate weather information prevents us from making the right decisions and actions and ends in affecting both our work and lifestyle.

super cute weather-themed cupcakes
On a bigger scale, the Philippines likewise needs to utilize weather information, not just for disaster-preparedness, but also for strengthening key programs in tourism, agriculture, business continuity, and sustainable development.

beautiful table set-up at the WeatherPhilippines event
Thankfully, WeatherPhilippines now provides the country with a premier weather sensing and forecasting system made possible by technology, inclusive partnerships, and communication. It was founded in 2012 by Aboitiz Foundation, UnionBank, and Meteogroup to deliver free, more localized, and accurate weather information accessed through weather.com.ph.

Lia Neri of WeatherPhilippines explaining about their advocacy
As of 2014, WeatherPhilippines has already deployed 750 Automated Weather Stations (AWS) nationwide in partnership with more than 568 Local Government Units and private sector companies. I first learned about them last year during the launch of the #WeatherWiser Nation campaign and was really impressed with their efforts.

the proper way to pack a backpack
WeatherPhilippines supports and complements the government's nationwide efforts to reduce risks of disasters and help build a #WeatherWiserNation using weather information for nation-building and sustainable development.

3-day forecast for Morong, Bataan
Last week, my husband and I joined a group of online influencers on a day trip to Anvaya Cove in Morong, Bataan to learn more on how localized weather affect our lives. The cool thing was, the day before we left, we got to check via the new WeatherPhilippines app how the weather in Bataan would be!

with friends in the blogging community
There, we also had a crash course on mountaineering courtesy of Mountain Hard Wear and Columbia Philippines. Although I don't normally climb mountains, the many tips I learned, such as waterproofing stuff inside my backpack and how to distribute weight evenly, would still be very useful to me when I go traveling.

Coach Manny of the proper way to stuff a tent inside its bag
As predicted, the weather in Anvaya was mostly cloudy without rain, which made it very ideal for us to take a dip in the pool and have some fun on the beach. Before we left, we even got to catch the beautiful sunset magnificently displayed across the ocean.

husband and wife bonding at the beach
The passion to strengthen local travels inspired WeatherPhilippines' to develop their new mobile application. Knowing a destination's weather in advance will definitely allow individuals to help create a #WeatherWiser nation that is empowered to use accurate information for enhancing one's lifestyle (be it travel, fashion, or sports) and optimizing economic productivity.

The WeatherPhilippines app is available for free download on iOS and Android. It gives weather a personal touch through its customizable locations and color-coded weather warnings based on world meteorological standards. There are now 750 areas all over the Philippines that have AWS. Users can select, save, and label significant locations as well as easily access the weather information and 3-day localized weather forecasts of their homes, offices, and favorite travel destinations.

so happy to have caught this awesome sunset in Anvaya Cove!
So, what's your #WOTD (Weather of the Day)? Download the app now! Keep updated on new developments and other useful information by liking WeatherPhilippines Foundation on Facebook.

The 39th MILO Marathon Welcomes Champions in the Manila Leg

The MILO Marathon has been in existence for 39 years. Finally, I got to join this prestigious race for the first time and ran 10k for the second time since I started engaging in this sport last year.  The Manila leg of the country's biggest footrace, held at the SM Mall of Asia grounds, was joined by children, students, aspiring runners, and professional athletes of all ages last July 26.

husband and wife bonding
Top finishers for the 42k were elite runners Eric Panique and Luisa Raterta who each received P50,000 in cash and a trophy. Victors of the 21k category, Gregg Osorio and Victorina Calma, brought home P10,000 and a trophy each. All runners who finished within the specified age-bracket and cut-off time per division will also receive a coveted slot in the National Finals in Angeles on December 6 where they will have a chance to be crowned the 2015 MILO Marathon King and Queen.

24k top finishers with Coach Rio and a Milo executive
Speaking of cut-off times, I only learned about it the day before when I checked MILO's Facebook page and felt really pressured to finish 10k before 1 hour and 30 minutes is up! Thankfully, we were booked at Microtel by Wyndham (booked through agoda) located at the Mall of Asia grounds so I got to sleep and rest longer before I started walking to the race venue around 4AM. Hubby, who ran 42k, left the hotel a couple of hours earlier.

bird's eye view of the race from Microtel's 11th floor

I wasn't sure if I could finish 10k before cut-off but the incentive to beat my personal record of 1:35 pushed me enough to run faster and not walk in between as much as I often do. I'm glad that the race route was not that hard. We even got to pass in front of Microtel so my son was able to take shots of runners while watching from our room's window at the 11th floor.

zooming in on the race route from Microtel's 11th floor
After making the last turn heading for the finish line, I could see the timer was already at 1:26 when I was still about two blocks away. It was such an awesome feeling to find out that my official race time is 1:27:59! Check your individual race result here:   https://results.chronotrack.com/event/results/event/event-13006

new PR on my race result -- I made it to the cut-off time! :)
Right after, I went around and stood by near the 42k finish line where I waited for my husband (read his MILO Marathon blog post here). It was nice seeing a wide variety of people finishing this distance, both young and old, some in weird but fun costumes. I'm not sure if I'd have the guts to do that in the future. I guess I'm sticking to wearing my regular running pants, my favorite cap, and my belt bag that contains my iPod and smartphone (so I can use the Runtastic app).

Likewise, if you want an easier way to find an official photo of yourself during the run, just enter your bib number at this website:   http://photo-ops.ph/39th-milo-marathon-manila/

This year's MILO Marathon King and Queen will be sent by MILO to the USA on all-expense paid trips for a chance to run in the prestigious Boston Marathon, the world's oldest annual marathon and one of the world's best-known road racing events.

finished my second 10k, yey!

Hotel Review: Microtel by Wyndham Mall of Asia (Highly Recommended for Runners!)

I have come to enjoy running (despite my misgivings a year ago) but I still find the gun start times difficult for comfort. The night owl in me has gotten used to doing practice runs in the late afternoons, just before sunset. So there's always a change in schedule whenever my husband and I join actual races. It's either I get very little sleep or won't sleep at all.

a beautiful sight to wake up to in the morning!
When we signed up for the Manila leg of MILO Marathon 2015, I already anticipated not getting enough sleep before race day and standing by for a couple of hours at the venue after hubby joins 42k runners at an earlier gun start.

Microtel's pretty facade
Since the race would be held at the Mall of Asia grounds, we had this idea of booking a room in Microtel by Wyndham, which is the nearest hotel to the venue. Thankfully, agoda offers discounted rates for thousands of hotels, including this one.

our beautiful sunset view room
I appreciated being given a room on the 11th floor because we got a great view of Manila Bay, the MOA Eye Ferris Wheel, and its surrounding areas. Our room has two big beds and convenient amenities such as a mini ref which we filled with various drinks we later bought from the nearby SM Hypermarket.

Loved the convenience of a big closet, mirror, cable TV, desk, and mini ref
We had the sunset view room but it was very unfortunate to arrive there in the afternoon while rain was pouring. Still, the silver lining to this is a great view of the MOA Fireworks that night, which they have every Fridays and Saturdays. Too, the comfy window seat was the perfect place to get shots of runners the next day! You can read my separate blog post with pictures taken from our hotel window and more details about our MILO Marathon experience here.

my son's shot of the MOA fireworks
Hubby and I appreciated Microtel's proximity to the mall because we just walked there to have dinner together while our second son stayed behind in the hotel to look after his brother with special needs. Later that night, hubby and Gab went back to MOA to watch a movie. How nice to be so near dining and entertainment establishments! But in case it's raining or you're simply too lazy to walk, ask the front desk about the hourly free shuttle service to and from the mall.

bathroom amenities
In addition, Microtel's staff are very friendly. Checking in and out were a breeze. The guards even cheerfully greeted me the next day on my way out at 4AM as I walked towards the starting line for the 10K race. I couldn't believe how well-rested I was that morning! Unlike in previous races, there wasn't any pressure to accompany hubby a couple of hours early so I got to sleep longer.

Microtel's spacious dining area
Our room included a free breakfast for two. Unfortunately, since we stayed at the race venue to cover the post-event press con, we didn't get to eat at the hotel as breakfast can only be availed until 10AM so I have no photos about it to share with you. We also hadn't time to enjoy the pool awesomely located on the rooftop but we did have hot showers and some rest before we had to head home. I do hope we get to come back and stay there again one of these days to maximize enjoying the many amenities, including the fitness center.

a relaxing roof deck leading to the pool area
Microtel is a 3-star city hotel that features air-conditioned rooms with chiropractor-approved mattresses, cable TV, Internet-ready data port, and private toilet with hot and cold shower. Its location inside the Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay City makes it very accessible to major trade halls and top attractions in Metro Manila, including SMX and Philippine International Convention Center, Cultural Center of the Philippines, Manila Ocean Park, and Intramuros. Furthermore, Ninoy Aquino International Airport is only a 20-minute drive away.

my sons and I on the window seat
To fellow runners, the next time you join a race to be held in MOA, consider having a room in Microtel and experience how convenient it is! Make sure you book through agoda because they offer some of the lowest prices compared to published rates!

Panorama Prenatal Screening: Letting You Be a Proactive Parent Even While You're Still Pregnant

$

It has been said in the past that nothing can actually prepare you to be a parent -- that what you can do is to mostly learn as you go. For many moms and dads who have a hundred and one things to do each day, it's easier to take action when situations already call for it. Parenting decisions then become a consequence of how we react to specific moments.

Every baby deserves a proactive parent
In reality, however, what we need is to be proactive parents who are committed today to get ready for tomorrow's issues and concerns so that we can deal with them in the best possible way. According to Ichel Alignay, a family life specialist, proactive parenting means long-term thinking

"We cannot choose what happens to us, but we can choose how to respond to it," she encouraged.  "Proactive parenting can buffer many unpleasant childhood events that may have long-term effects on the individual." In a nutshell, moms and dads need to set a vision for what they'd want their family to be. When? This should start the moment you find out you are expecting a baby.

start being a proactive parent while you are still pregnant
Considering prenatal screening is one way to be a proactive parent. At Hi-Precision Diagnostics, moms-to-be are given the option to undergo Panorama Prenatal Screen, a non-invasive DNA screening test that gives essential genetic information about your baby as early as nine weeks into your pregnancy. "It is important to know your baby's health ahead of time so you can prepare better," pointed out Dr. Camille Cyncynatus, Strategic Account Manager at Natera, a genetics testing and diagnostics company.

Any mom, whether she is having her first baby or her fourth one, can benefit from Panorama. Your blood sample can already let you know your baby's gender as well as his/her likelihood of having a chromosomal condition.

all it takes is a blood sample
During pregnancy, some of your baby's DNA actually crosses into your bloodstream. The reassuring thing is, Panorama Prenatal Screen is the only test that can distinguish between fetal and maternal DNA. This enables Hi-Precision Diagnotics' laboratory specialists to analyze your baby's DNA using your blood.

Since Panorama is a non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT), it may be done in a single in-office visit. You will not be exposed to any extraneous elements so the procedure is absolutely safe for both mother and baby.

a Hi-Precision Diagnostics laboratory specialist
In case you don't know, women who get pregnant at over 35 years old have a higher chance of having babies with certain chromosomal abnormalities such as Down Syndrome and Angelman Syndrome. Still, it is important to note that certain biological conditions affect women of all ages. So regardless of age, family issues, or medical history, a screen test can help determine your baby's risk of being affected with a specific chromosome condition.

Panorama screens for a broad panel of chromosome conditions, including Chromosomal Abnormalities, Sex Chromosome Abnormalities, and Microdeletions. More importantly, Panorama is amazingly accurate with a 100 percent batting average on fetal sex determination.

it's always better to be prepared
"Panorama has the lowest chance of false negatives and false positives," added Dr. Cyncynatus. "It also detects more cases of microdeletion syndromes and uniquely tests Triploidy, a rare chromosomal abnormality."

Having results from a Panorama Prenatal Screen will give you essential information, which will allow you to decide on your next course of action for the future health and well-being of your baby.

What do you do in case the result is positive? According to Dr. Maria Niza Reyes, an OB-Gyne and fetal and maternal medicine specialist, you may want to look into genetic counseling and undergo an invasive prenatal diagnostic test such as amniocentesis for fetal karyotyping.

from left: Ichel Alignay, Dr. Reyes, Dr. Cyncynatus, and Melissa Ongsue-Lee
Also, if you know beforehand that you'll be having a baby who will need special care, plan to give birth in a tertiary hospital and have medical specialists standing by to make proper diagnoses.

Melissa Ongsue-Lee, VP for Sales and Marketing of H-Precision Diagnostics, said they repeat tests with abnormal results, for free. She also clarified that they are advocating for "preparation not termination." How much is Panorama? The basic test costs P37,000 while the extended package is P55,000.  For more information and inquiries, visit www.hi-precision.com.ph, like www.facebook.com/hpdiagnostics, and follow @HP_Diagnostics on Twitter and @hiprecisiondiagnostics on Instagram

Australian Oranges are Now in Season and are Available in the Philippines!

I love eating fresh oranges as well as drinking 100% freshly squeezed orange juice. They are delicious fruits that have long been considered a valuable part of a healthy and nutritious diet. It is also well-established that nutrients in citrus promote health and provide protection against chronic diseases.

fresh and sweet Aussie oranges and juice
Given a choice, I'd love to live in a place where oranges are accessible all year round at affordable prices. Filipino-Australian celebrities such as TV host Iya Villania-Arellano, Chris Everingham of the Philippine Volcanoes, and Fely Irvine, a former member of Hi-5 Australia, are very fortunate to have grown up in a country where oranges are part of people's daily lives.

This whole month of August, Filipinos can also enjoy Australian oranges that are not only healthy, fresh, and safe, but also affordable. The Australian Embassy, in partnership with Citrus Australia and the Victorian Government, recently launched "Australian Oranges - Now in Season" to mark the availability of Aussie oranges in the Philippines.

Bondi & Burke Makati
In an afternoon tea with the media held at Bondi & Bourke in Makati City, Bill Tweddell, Australian Ambassador to the Philippines, shared how delighted they were to share one of his country's produce. "Australia's pristine growing environment and stringent food safety standards ensure that Australian oranges are of superior quality."

Arugula and Chicken Salad
Chris Everingham's favorite orange dish
You see, Australia's fruit industry is renowned for its world-class food safety standards and innovative traceability systems. "Through this technology, each batch of fruit can be tracked from the farm, to the packing house, up to when it reaches the Philippines," explained David Daniels, Market Access Manager of Citrus Australia.

Orange Beef Stir-Fry
Iya Villania-Arellano's favorite orange dish
Daniels shared that Australia is having a vintage season thanks to the favorable weather that has led to a superb crop. This means that we'll see bigger volumes of Australian oranges making their way to key supermarkets and groceries in the Philippines this year. Yey!

During the launch, aside from enjoying fresh orange wedges and fresh orange juice, we were also treated to dishes cooked with oranges prepared by Chef Wade Watson of Bondi & Burke. The recipes were actually favorite dishes of the three guest celebrities who loved eating them while growing up in Australia.

Anthony Weymouth, Minister Counsellor and Senior Trade Commissioner of Australian Trade Commission (Austrade), illustrated that Australia's geographic closeness to the Philippines means a shorter delivery time that translates to freshness and prolonged shelf life. "Importantly, the ASEAN Australia New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (AANZFTA) enables most temperate fruits from Australia, such as oranges, to enter the Philippines tariff-free [meaning] Filipinos can enjoy superior quality at great value."

Australian Oranges - Now in Season runs the whole month of August in key outlets of Landmark, Robinsons, Rustans, S&R, Shopwise, and SM Supermarkets. Buy some and use them in smoothies, salads, even sweet and savory recipes!

Merkado Supermarket Opens its First Store at U.P. Town Center with Awesome Promos

Any mom, I believe, enjoys shopping for her family. I do! Especially when it comes to buying food that I know my loved ones would appreciate.

shopping for groceries is fun!
Last July 31, I found myself in Quezon City attending the opening of Merkado Supermarket's first store located at U.P. Town Center. The concept interested me because this project is a joint venture between Ayala and Puregold, two respected names in the retails business.

friendly staff in pretty costumes
ALI Capital, Corp. (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ayala Land, Inc.) and Entenso Equities, Inc. (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Puregold Priceclub, Inc.) collaborated to become AyaGold Retailers, Inc., bringing fun and ease to grocery shopping.

super organized shelves -- an OC's haven :p
With its wide aisles, clean layout, organized sections, and a relaxed atmosphere, I can personally say I love shopping there because I spent more than an hour checking out the merchandise and bringing home several good finds! Add to that, I was able to claim a free 2L bottle of Coca Cola just by showing my receipt worth P1,000 :)

bought a lot of breads (and I mean, a LOT!) here
The mid-market store boasts of an extensive line of local and imported goods, as well as a wide range of fresh and grocery items, rotisserie and wine selection carefully handpicked for shoppers with a discerning taste. Merkado has friendly staff members who accommodate those needing assistance. Moreover, all check out counters accept cash and card transactions.

some of my favorite snacks in one section
Merkado definitely has something for everyone with over 20,000 merchandise items in its 3,900 sqm. floor area. I love the bakery section not only for the heavenly scent of freshly baked bread but also because it features local favorites and new special items such as their Japanese cheesecake. I happily bought different packs of bread at buy-one-take-one prices because I know my sons would finish them in no time.

look at that HUGE fish at the back!
My mommy friends and I found it so funny that we all wanted to grab the 12-pc. egg cartons that were being sold as buy-one-take-one, which means you get 24 eggs for only P79.00! Although I was very tempted to buy, I resisted the urge because they might end up as scrambled eggs by the time I arrive home in Alabang :p

ready-to-cook marinated meats
If you're having a family gathering or going on a weekend getaway, drop by the rotisserie for grilled or barbecue specials. For health buffs, there's an extensive fresh produce section (I wanted to buy all the fresh mushrooms!!!) that actually makes up 30% of the supermarket's mix along with the salad bar, cut fruits, a juicing section, and even fresh or cooked Japanese corn.

those mushrooms were calling my name so I bought 2 packs of enoki :)
Asian cuisine is also highlighted with featured spices and various kinds of sushi. In case you have a green thumb, this is a good place to find potted herbs that would definitely add a lot of aroma and flavor to your dishes. For those looking to buy flowers, head over to the store's resident florist where you can buy special floral arrangements for your loved ones.

take your pick from basil, mint, tarragon, and more!
There's much to be enjoyed by visiting Merkado and I've already encouraged my sister-in-law to bring my brother and their daughter there soon because it's so near their house inside the U.P. Diliman campus. Indeed, grocery shopping can be a great family bonding activity especially when there are a lot of reasons to regularly make that trip to the supermarket.

say, cheese!
Drop by Merkado and experience firsthand what I am talking about :) Follow their social media accounts to keep updated on new and ongoing promos.

Understanding Lee Hecht Harrison's Career Transition Service Program

$

0
We experience a lot of changes in life. Unfortunately, whether we like it or not, some of these changes are beyond our control. Still, it has been said that whatever problems we face are not as important as our attitude towards them. "Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude," right?

change can be confusing
But, what if your boss informs you that the company you've served loyally for years has to let you go and that you no longer have to report to work tomorrow, next week, or next month? What do you do? How do you think you'd feel? When will you tell your family about it?

Many of us have probably experienced job loss at some point in our careers. Maybe it was due to a merger or takeover, a decision to downsize operations, or other various reasons. The thing is, laid off employees are not just the ones affected. Their families will also feel the financial and emotional impact.

Mr. Vicente Kilayko
"When employees have to be laid off, it's really usually nobody's fault. Changes happen. When two companies merge, you cannot have two presidents, one must go. Or, if new technology comes in and manual labor is eliminated, then you have to let people go, too," explained Vicente Kilayko, Managing Director of Lee Hecht Harrison (LHH). "But, it should be the employer's responsibility to make sure that the laid off employees are taken cared of."

Now THAT is the missing link! Displaced workers don't have to go through this challenging phase alone! Outplacement or Career Transition Service (CTS) is a program offered by LHH designed to help companies make changes in their organization by taking care of employees that are impacted or laid off because of change.

LHH's Assess, Implement, Manage (AIM) Framework Milestones
Kilayko described LHH as the only global outplacement establishment in the Philippines. It has already partnered with more than 200 local and foreign companies and has served more than 5,000 people in transition ranging from rank and file employees to CEOs.

What LHH does encompasses:

  1. The Manager Notification Training (MNT), which helps companies prepare for Tell-Day by ensuring that the message is delivered properly and the impacted employee's self-respect is maintained. Kilayko shared that they also discuss strategies on how to communicate with the remaining employees.
  2. The Onsite Notification Support that ensures that an LHH Consultant is available onsite during Tell-Day to help talk to impacted employees through the first emotional reactions, the next steps, and the "Do's" and "Don'ts," which may include advice on how to share the news with their spouse, family, and friends.
  3. The CTS program or Outplacement that can either be delivered to a group or individually. Participants are guided on how to examine their career; clarify their career-related interests, skills, and values; evaluate career options; and apply the career decision-making process.

our fun and enlightening group session

Group workshops can run for several days while individual programs can range from one month to as long as one year. In the individual program, participants are given access to a professional career consultant and an adviser on financial planning, investment management, and entrepreneurship. They are also provided online resources (database, resume templates, and online training) as well as job leads and market information.

Individuals can further attend group focus sessions that build skills in resume writing, interviewing, negotiating, personal planning, investment management, entrepreneurship, debt and credit management, and many other topics. For those who feel the need to be inside an office setting while they decide on what to do next, LHH has available work stations, unlimited internet access, telephone, secretary services, and a library with publications related to recruitment and job search.

work stations at the LHH office
I had the chance to experience for myself what happens during a CTS session when I visited the LHH premises in Makati the other day. Operations Director Jo Ann Asetre gave us a preview of some of the activities done during the program.

According to her, the primary objective of a career transition program is to help participants find an appropriate new career as quickly and as effectively as possible. Note, then, that it is not advisable to grab just any job that comes your way after losing one!

what do you value most?
In addition, to avoid any misconceptions that they are like head hunting companies, Jo Ann clarified, "We teach people how to find a job, not give them one." To differentiate better, head hunters are hired by companies to find individuals to fill up positions, LHH is hired by companies, that are letting go of positions or individuals, to offer the CTS program to those affected or terminated.

A new career may be in the form of another job, a new business, or active retirement. To arrive at any of these, you have to have a professional objective first because it will give you direction in your job search, set the tone for resume and other communications, and help you select and prioritize your contact and target lists.

what things are you good at, want to develop, or totally hate doing?
You also have to be sure that what you want to do fits your qualifications and that you are aware of different possibilities and options, not just a single job. I appreciated the activity where we grouped cards that indicate specific tasks we enjoy, slightly enjoy, or totally don't enjoy doing and which ones we are highly competent in or have no skills at all. This affirmed my present career choices and why I would probably never get into any job that involves being an entertainer :p

I also enjoyed the activity where we chose which principles we value most or not. Each card has detailed descriptions of each principle so it was quite easy to place them in the categories where they belong. It was interesting to see my fellow bloggers putting their cards in different orders and priorities. Just shows how unique each of us are.

the Insight Game
My top favorite activity, however, is the Insight Game where I found that I have an INTJ (Introverted Intuition with Extraverted Thinking) personality. I read through the assessment paper and saw many of the descriptions such as "have a driving need to understand, to know, and to demonstrate competence,""trust their insights,""want to make sense of the world,""value logic," and "driven by insight/intuition" really fit me. That was such a lightbulb moment! If all displaced employees would get to undergo these kinds of sessions, I am sure they will find their next job faster and which they would be happy to have.

In a nutshell, outplacement basically bridges the gap between careers and provides a good opportunity to assess one's employability under the guidance of a professional career consultant. LHH statistics prove that those in the program find their next job 50% faster.

an individual consultation at LHH
In case you're wondering, LHH does not offer CTS to walk-in individuals. If you are affected by a change in your company, contact your Human Resources Department and request them to provide you with an outplacement program. In fact, it would be good to ask for a CTS clause before you sign any employment contracts in the future! Did you know, in other countries, particularly Spain, outplacement is already mandated by law?

Employers may ask, what's in it for me? Here are the benefits of CTS:
  • termination is conducted correctly and sensitively
  • it eases stress and trauma
  • enhances public image
  • helps maintain morale of remaining staff
  • minimizes possibility of legal action
  • fulfills a social responsibility
the Lee Hecht Harrison Philippine team
I wholeheartedly agree with Mr. Kilayko when he said corporate social responsibility should begin within the company. "It's not always about building homes for the poor or educating street children. It's also about looking out for the welfare of your employees," he pointed out.

I've been hearing a lot about the health benefits of acai (pronounced ah-sah-ee) berries for a couple of years now but haven't had the chance to try it yet. These fruits come from the acai tree, the tallest palm tree in the Amazon jungle that grows up to 80 feet. According to Cathy Salimbangon, Vice President for Marketing of Organique, Inc., for centuries, the small, dark purple berries have been a staple in the diet of Brazil's indigenous people. "They consume it regularly and it is what they use to remedy aches and pains, from infection to stomach problems."

Considered by many as the king of super foods in recent years, the acai berry is rich in antioxidants that fights cell damage. "It's basically a cellular approach, our cells are being attacked by free radicals from the pollutants around us, antioxidants help repair them so your body is replenished and functions better overall," simplified Cathy during Organique's recent media event at Prime101 in Pasong Tamo, Makati.

Antioxidants in acai, she said, gives you more energy, delays signs of aging, and strengthens the immune system, among many other health benefits. Acai berries also have omega oils that are needed for proper function of the brain and cardiovascular system. "It has all the basic vitamins and minerals that our body needs aside from being high in dietary fiber."

It is this same berry found in Organique Acai Premium Blend. According to Cathy, their brand has the highest concentration of Acai among others available in the market. "We are organic-certified by the United States Department of Agriculture," she shared, adding that the USDA Organic Seal indicates that the contents of a product is 95% or more certified organic. This means it is free of synthetic additives such as pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and dyes, and is not processed using industrial solvents, irradiation, or genetic engineering. "We use aseptic technique, an organic process that kills microbes to keep products fresh for up to three years."

Cathy is a registered nurse who worked for several years in Geriatrics in the United States and Canada so she has seen how an unhealthy lifestyle can impact one's body. This was what led her and her husband Elton, who worked in the nutraceuticals industry, to launch Organique Acai Premium Blend in 2009. Both believe how important it is to be pro-active in taking care of one's body. "[And] it is best to start while you're young and to go for natural measures, as much as possible."

with the always young-looking Ms. Cory
Present during the event was TV host and wellness icon, Ms. Cory Quirino, who said she already knew of the health benefits of acai berry even before it became available in the Philippines and that she is more than happy to advocate for Organique Acai Premium Blend because it keeps her feeling good and looking good." To prove how acai helps keeps her young, she whipped out her senior citizen's card and proudly showed it to us, sharing a funny anecdote of the time she was applying for one.

Ms. Cory revealed that acai berries have a high Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) value. "The higher the value, the better it can fight inflammation [or infection]." Basically, ORAC is a lab test that quantifies a food item's antioxidant capacity.

Regine Tolentino looking fit and sexy as ever
Dancer and fitness enthusiast Regine Tolentino was also quick to testify, "Organique Acai Premium Blend helps maintain my energy level throughout the day, even with back to back Zumba classes."

The recommended dose of Organique Acai Premium Blend is 30-60ml per day depending on the health conditions of a person. We were made to try a shot glass full and I found the taste very pleasant. So this is definitely something I wouldn't mind drinking daily.

one shot of Organique Acai a day
already gives you loads of antioxidants

Cathy however clarified that Organique is not just a refreshing drink. "We are effect-driven. If you're down with something, you can double dose or triple dose it because you need more nutrients when you're sick," suggested Cathy. "It is best taken on an empty stomach -- pure, with water, with ice, or added to your smoothie."

Organique Acai Premium Blend is available in 946-ml bottles. Each sells for P2,500 at Mercury Drug, Pure Pharmacy, Robinson's Supermarket, South Star Drug, and Watsons. It is also distributed in the United States, Hong Kong, Japan, and the Middle East.

The annual World Food Expo is a great venue to showcase new technologies in the food industry and I felt privileged to be there as Bosch unveils its latest built-in cooking series at WOFEX 2015 in SMX Convention Center this August 5-8.

Event host Gelli Victor interviewing Chef Jean Charles Dubois
Bosch Series 8 Ovens, which were granted the 2015 German Design Award, feature 21 new technologies that will make preparing dishes a breeze for both novices and seasoned cooks. Host a party with a lavish menu or simply cook for your family with the help of the Series 8's intuitive and sophisticated sensors that guarantee perfect results.

Chef JC setting the oven for baking
Bosch ambassador Chef Jean Charles Dubois, from the famed Balzac Brasserie and Bar in Singapore, demoed several of his specialties to prove to expo attendees how the Series 8 takes the guesswork out of creating delectable dishes with minimum effort. He showed us how to execute three heavenly recipes that looked really easy to prepare. You really just need an intelligent oven to get the doneness right.

Chef JC showing how the choux pastry was perfectly baked
Very often, people who cook have to rely on their senses to gauge when a dish is done according to their preferences. But, with the Series 8, its highly-sophisticated sensors automatically make the necessary adjustments.

Tahitian Vanilla Mascarpone Choux, Fleur de sel Caramel -- delicious!
Aside from those, there's Bosch's exclusive and newly-developed 4D hot air technology that ensures heat to be evenly distributed for well-balanced cooking results. This consistent heating is delivered by a symmetric, alternating fan driven by the efficient EcoSilence Drive motor. You no longer have to guess where to place your dish. Simply put cooking trays on any of the oven's four baking and roasting levels and you'll still get similar best outcomes, even when you bake and roast on all four levels at once.

bake breads with ease using the Series 8 Ovens
This product of German ingenuity also come with a new steam injection function that allows meat dishes to be roasted with hot air and steam resulting to being crispy outside and succulent inside. I didn't know that when you bake in combination with steam, you can also make shiny bread crusts! In addition, the Series 8 can be used to steam veggies and fish in the traditional way while its integrated microwave feature can also reduce cooking time by up to 50 percent.

beaten egg whites rising perfectly to become fluffy meringue
The fuss-free PerfectBake sensor, on the other hand, regulates moisture levels in the oven cavity for an even bake. This means you can prepare perfectly-risen sponge cakes, muffins, cupcakes, and breads because the oven automatically sets the ideal heating mode, temperature and duration when you put your uncooked item in -- no more under-baked or burnt cakes from now on!

Ile Flottant with Mango Gazpacho and Grated Yuzu -- yum!
Plus, there's the new PerfectRoast meat probe, a device that measures the core temperature of meats so you can get an exact sense of the doneness of your roasted meat, poultry, or fish at three different points. It has a high level of accuracy that promises perfect roasting results.

Bosch executive showing us the PerfectRoast meat probe
Chef Jill Sandique and Chef Kim Castillo were also present to share their recipes cooked using the Bosch Series 8 Ovens. True to Bosch's iconic user-interface design, the ovens are precisely contoured with full metal surfaces, and built with a high-resolution and interactive display. The beautiful exteriors are embellished with glass touch buttons, embossed icon buttons, and brushed stainless shell integrated control rings.

helping finance a library in Cambodia for underprivileged kids
through the sales of his children's book -- more details about it, here
