Film Buffs Join Star Movies' Move-A-Thon for a Chance to Win P200,000

I love watching movies but, at my age, I don't think I could dance for 24 hours straight! What's the connection, you ask?

Star Movies Move-A-Thon Logo
Last June 27, Star Movies kept moviegoers on their feet all day and all night for a movie marathon that required non-stop dancing. They could only rest a bit while there's no singing and dancing on screen but should start moving and grooving once more when the music starts.

caught most part of Dirty Dancing and enjoyed re-watching this classic film
I arrived at the venue around 12NN that day to check out the amazing contenders. By that time, they were already on their third movie since the competition started at 5AM. The groups of avid film viewers were expected to shimmy and shake their "groove thang" while watching famous movie musicals such as Annie, Magic Mike XXL, Dirty Dancing, Frozen, Pitch Perfect 2, Happy Feet 2, and Mamma Mia for the chance to win the grand prize of P200,000.

amazing how they kept their energy going!
This much anticipated Star Movies contest started in 2010 with a straight-up movie marathon with unlimited food and drinks. It was upgraded with a fitness theme involving yoga and other physical challenges in 2012 while 2013 saw a rigid boot camp theme and where the grand prize was awarded to just one hardy individual.

watch as they danced to Dirty Dancing's best scene

Last year's scare-a-thon showing horror movies required 500 participants to sit completely still until one winner remained. Now those were such tough activities! For 2016, Star Movies allowed viewers to compete by teams. And since it required dancing, Star Movies took the marathon out of the cinemas and onto the dance floor of House Manila in Resorts World. The channel and partner sponsors provided everyone food and drinks throughout the day.

prizes from Cadbury
Aside from having to constantly move throughout the contest, participants also had to win in various challenges to earn their bathroom breaks. Since they had to go through rigid requirements while also thinking of their teammates' physical comfort, the event resulted in a fun and chaotic dance party slash movie marathon that went down in Star Movies history.

an all-girls team
In the end The KPop Moveathoners remained the last team standing and had the privilege of sharing the P200,000 among themselves. Congratulations to members Regiely Prado, Rona Liezl Cruz, Paul Ian Lorica, Michael John Prado, and John Wilford Prado!

funny poses with prizes from Dolfenal
Charo Espedido, Director and Head of Marketing for FOX International Channels, shared how excited they were to continue Star Movies' tradition of exciting movie marathons this year and add another cool twist to up the game. "Star Movies Move-A-Thon certainly brought the most dedicated film lovers out of the woodwork and onto the dance floor, and we're proud to be handling the prize over this year to those who really worked for it, had a lot of fun, and really deserved it."

The Star Movies Move-A-Thon was made possible by FOX Networks Group in cooperation with Listerine, Cadbury, Dolfenal, official venue partners Resorts World Manila and House Manila, and official coffee partner, Bo’s Coffee.

Why Choose Kojie San for Skin Lightening?

Whitening products are among the best-selling items in Philippine supermarkets because a lot of Filipino women prefer to have fairer, more radiant, and flawless skin. The question remains, though, which ingredient is best for skin lightening?

Kojie San Classic Line
Kojie San's Skin Lightening Soap contains two powerful natural-based ingredients: Kojic Acid and high-grade virgin coconut oil. Originating from Japan, Kojic Acid is a chemical compound made from organic materials. It can also be extracted as a by-product of fermentation when making Japanese rice wine and Sake.

Inspired by the luminous, flawless skin of Japanese women, Beauty Elements Ventures, Inc. (BEVI) developed its flagship product, the Kojie San Lightening Soap, the way the Japanese traditionally formulated theirs.

Since 2007, Kojie San's lightening soap has been consistently produced by blending high-grade Kojic Acid and virgin coconut oil with effective lightening ingredients that prevent the formation of dark pigmentation and tyrosinase, the enzyme that produces melanin pigments, which are responsible for skin darkening.

no fear to be under the sun because
Kojie San helps even out my skin tone!
Local whitening fans, including ladies I personally know, have become true believers of the formulation. No wonder Kojie San is now the number one Kojic Acid soap in the Philippines.

Regular use of Kojie San is the best way to even out skin tone, erase dark spots, and other forms of skin pigmentations. This also corrects skin discoloration and, of course, lightens skin. Moreover, Kojie San products do not contain any hydroquinone, mercury, or steroid that may cause further skin irritation like blisters, swelling, and severe allergy.

Trisha Gregorio, Kojie San's marketing director, states, "Whitening has always been one of the goals of most Filipinas today. Perhaps from the influence that we get from Korea and Japan or our exposure to teleseryes starring women with flawlessly fair skin, we see that they really look beautiful and attractive."

Trisha Gregorio
She adds, "According to research, having a whiter complexion can really boost your self-esteem. However, not all whitening products are the same and not all so-called Kojic Acid formulated soaps are as effective and safe like Kojie San."

With more Filipinas falling in love with the Kojie San effect, the brand decided to launch a full range of lightening products to complement its best selling soap. Read more about the formulations and benefits of Kojie San Cleanser + Toner, Kojie San Face Lightening Cream, and Kojie San Body Lightening Lotion, here.

If you are someone who's still looking for the best lightening product, make sure to catch the new Kojie San campaign ads online and on TV so you can see what it can do for YOUR skin. There are no celebrities nor famous faces to show. It's just Kojie San and you -- because with Kojie San, each one of us can be the It Girl.

We Ran as a Family in the 9th Robinsons Fit & Fun Wellness Buddy Run!

One of the top things that make me happy is doing activities with the people I care most about in this world -- my family. Thus, it gives me joy when I get to bond with my husband and second son during practice runs and actual races

excited to run together!
Most times, though, we leave our special child with one of his brothers at home when we have to join races. When we found out that there'll be another Robinsons Buddy Run this July, I told my husband that I'd love to push James' wheelchair while I team up with our youngest son as my running partner for the 5k category. Thankfully, Daniel has also took up running every now and then with his friends. (Read his blog entry about it, here.)

thank you so much to all the kind people who made way for us
at the starting line
And so there we were, the whole family minus one (our eldest is on night shift at the office) at 4AM traveling to Bonifacio Global City and praying it won't rain. Our friends at Stratworks thankfully offered us a ride along with fellow bloggers who also live in the South.

my handsome running buddy
I can't believe he's now taller than I am!
We arrived at the venue while many were already doing warm up exercises. People milled about, checking out the many interesting booths scattered around the race village. Us? We happily took groufies to preserve memories.

my barefoot running boys
Hubby (read his blog post, here) and Gab (read his blog post, here) went ahead to join the 10k runners while we waited for the 5k gun start. James was already getting sleepy but came wide awake once we started moving. I think he was fascinated to soak in the sights around BGC while also seeing hundreds of people wearing the same colored singlets running or walking in one direction.

that's the smile of a really happy mommy :)
Daniel and I took turns pushing James' wheelchair. We alternately walked and ran with me huffing and puffing after my son who turned out to be a fast runner! No wonder we finished the route in about half an hour despite my usual personal time for 5k runs averaging 40 minutes.

lots of groceries in the runners'"loot bag"
Upon reaching the finish line, runners were given a huge bag of grocery items each. Talk about motivation! Thank you so much Robinsons Supermarket and partner sponsors for being so generous! I hope this will jumpstart many of the participants to continue running with or without freebies and instead focus more on the sports' health benefits :) Like one quote I've recently read, "One run can change your day, but many runs will change your life."

one of us was already really sleepy by the time the run ended :)
I am truly grateful for this chance to bond with my family in a new way. The 9th Robinsons Fit & Fun Wellness Buddy Run was James' and Daniel's first official fun run and I sincerely hope it will not be the last. Here's to better health for our families!

 * Sincerest thanks to the Running Photographers for the great shots!

Liwayway Marketing Corporation Celebrates 70th Year with Oishi Snacktacular 2016

I've been invited last year to Oishi Snacktacular 2015 but wasn't able to go. This year, I almost didn't make it again. Fortunately, my out-of-town trip has been rescheduled to later this month so I made time to join and experience how it is to have fun the Oishi O, Wow! way.

love this very creative photo booth!
Oishi Snacktacular 2016, held at the Music Hall of SM Mall of Asia, is an exciting event filled with innovative booths where walk-in guests can experience fun activities, taste Oishi goodies, and bring home lots of Oishi snacks. Celebrity sightings are also in store as members of Team O appear to the delight of their fans.

my paparazzi shot of #KathNiel
My son and I were at the event opening yesterday (read his blog post about it, here) and enthusiastically joined all the activities. First, we went to the Make Your Own Snack booth where I chose potato chips and fries shaken with nori and wasabi powder. Yum!

make your own snack for only P20
Perfectly complementing the chips was a Smart C+ slushee in calamansi or pomelo flavor from the Slush C+ booth. Like their bottled beverage counterparts, both tasted really good and were very refreshing!

for P20, you get a refreshing drink from
the giant Smart C+ slushee dispensers
Our next stop was the crowd favorite Snack Catcher booth where one can become a human claw for a day by being lowered to a giant pool of Oishi treats and … well ... just watch this video to see what I mean :) For a bird's eye view of the snack pool, view the video I uploaded on Write, Breathe, Live's Facebook page.

experience being a human claw for P200
and take home all the treats you'll be able to grab!

I need more practice, though, because I only got to grab 52 pieces of snacks while my son got 82. The running record at the time was 110. O, Wow! indeed!

Gab was the better snack catcher between the two of us :)
I think I did better at the Snack Shack booth because we got to specifically choose our favorite Oishi treats, which we had to stuff into a 2-feet tall Oishi bag within one minute. There were no second thoughts as a stationed myself near the Gourmet Picks section and got several of my favorite Nori and Wasabi flavor as well as variants of Ridges Potato Chips :)

fill a giant bag with your top favorite Oishi treats for P295
Gab and I also stopped by the O-Twirl booth to get our Choco Chug ice cream fix. There were so many toppings to choose from but I opted for a Wafu Stick and Mobsters Popcorn. If there was more time, I would have gladly come back for a second helping because it tasted sooooo good!

have a cool dessert at the O-Twirl booth for P20
Lastly, we tried our hands (more like wings!) at the Cuckoo Blaster booth where we attempted to catch as many pingpong balls while wearing a Cuckoo suit. That was fun! I actually want to post three photos to simulate the Tatlong Bibe peg but most shots of me are too embarrassing to upload online hahaha.

isang bibe LOL
pay P100 to play and bring home more Oishi snacks!
Visit Oishi Snacktacular 2016 while it's still ongoing at SM Mall of Asia and also get to catch members of Team O such as Ramon Bautista, Alex Gonzaga, Slater YoungElmo Magallona, Kathryn Bernardo, Daniel Padilla, and latest addition, Maine Mendoza.

Team O with event host Samantha Purvor
Don't forget to also view the interesting World of O, Wow! booth (complete set of photos, here) that chronicles the 70 successful years of Liwayway Marketing Corporation, the company behind Oishi, with glimpses of Oishi snacks that are unique to other countries like Pillows Buko from Vietnam, Pods Manchurian Style from India, and many more.

Happy 70th Anniversary Liwayway Marketing Corporation!
Thank you Oishi and Team Bridges for an unforgettable afternoon!

Online Beauty Portal ALTHEA KOREA Turns One!

I like Korean personal care products. They are effective and many come in pretty packaging. Most of them are also very affordable. However, their popularity has also led unscrupulous people to manufacture fake products, which can be dangerous to consumers.

Althea always delivers items inside a cute pink box
Of course, I want to make sure I only buy authentic Korean products and the best place to find them is through the Althea Korea website. There, beauty enthusiasts can easily browse dozens of Korean brands and hundreds of items that include skincare, cosmetics, and hair and body products. Tabs dedicated to the latest trends as well as bestsellers and new arrivals can also be found for a smooth online shopping experience.

my first purchases from Althea Korea in January 2016

Early this year, Althea Philippines was launched to make it easier for Filipinas to order Korean products online with prices set in Philippine Pesos. The first time I logged in several months ago, I was surprised and pleased to discover new brands offering high quality and value-for-money products.

Needless to say, I happily ordered several items that I would like to try. The package, which came in a pretty pink box, was delivered after just a few days with a sample-sized freebie to boot! Shipping is free for purchases P1,500 and up.

Althea's birthday giveaway
What I highly appreciate in the website are the step-by-step instructions under each listing on how to use certain products and how they would look like on your skin. Those are really helpful because Korean products usually don't have English instructions on the packagings.

Today, Althea Korea celebrates its first birthday so I'm writing this blog as a tribute to a great website where one can find various Korean products in one place. I ordered a new batch of products last month and they arrived in a special pink box with some party essentials included!

my second Althea Korea box came with a birthday party DIY kit!
Join the celebration! From July 20 to 31, 2016, customers can …
  • Receive items in a limited edition birthday box + DIY party kit. Offer good while supplies last.
  • Score free goodies (for first 1,500 shoppers) of full-sized beauty products, while stocks last.
  • Pick 3 bestsellers and get 100% rebate to be credited to your account.
  • Win in the #AltheaTurns1 photo contest by posting a photo greeting Althea on its birthday and stand a chance to win amazing prizes such as Macbook Air, iPad Air 2, iPhone 6S, Galaxy S6 Edge, Canon EOS M10 Selfie Camera, Althea credits, and beauty hampers. There will be a total of KRW10,000,000 worth of prizes at stake. Contest ends on August 15, 2016.
celebrate with Althea as it turns one today!
So let's all greet Althea Korea a very Happy Birthday! Thank you for making it more accessible for Filipinas to get ahold of your country's awesome products! :)

SM Cares, UNICEF, Tanghalang Pilipino, and Camera Club Celebrate National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation (NSPR) Week

I support several advocacies because I genuinely believe in the big difference they make in people's lives. On top of my list is advocating for individuals with special needs because my third son is one and I would like to see them all treated with respect and dignity like any normal member of society.

14-year-old Marina Villa, a beautiful girl diagnosed with
Down Syndrome and Autism, has taught her family
the true meaning of patience, courage, humility, and unconditional love
This year, I am joining SM Cares, UNICEF, Tanghalang Pilipino, and the Camera Club of the Philippines in celebrating the National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation (NDPR) Week, which started last July 18.

Elai Tovera suffers from Spastic Cerebral Palsy
(the same condition my son has) but remains
a dedicated student who is eager to learn and lights up
when talking about her school
I believe in their objective of raising awareness and helping create an inclusive environment for Children with Disabilities (CWDs) by highlighting their abilities instead of their disabilities. The campaign, called #ThisAbilityPH, features informative and educational activities for mall-goers through Tanghalang Pilipino's Sandosenang Sapatos stage play and an exhibit entitled See What I Can Do by the Camera Club where photos depict the everyday lives of CWDs.

VP Leni delivering a very inspiring speech

The NDPR was launched at the Music Hall of SM Mall of Asia the other day. Vice President Leni Robredo, who was guest of honor, gave a very inspiring speech.

ribbon cutting to formally open the
See What I Can Do photo exhibit
It was heartwarming to see her stay longer after the ribbon cutting to briefly meet, one by one, all the kids with disabilities featured in the photos and patiently have her photo taken with them.

VP Leni with Gabriel Vega Querubin who, despite deformities in his hands
and leg, does not let these hinder him from engaging in
physical activities that bring him joy
Later, we were all treated with a free staging of Sandosenang Sapatos, a well-loved children's story based on a book written by Dr. Luis Gatmaitan and published by OMF Literature. As I expected, the highly-professional and talented TP actors gave such an amazing show despite the lack of CCP's formal stage and designed backdrops.

Sandosenang Sapatos is heartwarming and inspiring
if you can't watch the show, buy the book and read it!
In addition, although the sun was shining bright and hot, it didn't deter the cast from delivering wonderful performances although I could just imagine how uncomfortable it was to be wearing costumes and make up while singing and dancing amidst the afternoon heat. Great job, everybody!

Watch this sneak peek of Sandosenang Sapatos!
It will make you want to catch the next performance!

Make sure to catch repeat free stagings of Sandosenang Sapatos at the SM MOA Music Hall this coming Saturday, July 23, and at SM City Clark's event center on Sunday, July 24. The photo exhibit will be displayed in both MOA and Clark until July 23. It will be displayed in SM City Cebu from August 13 to 19, then in SM City Davao from August 22 to 28.

in her dreams, Susie, a disabled child, can do anything
This initiative is just one of the collaborative efforts between SM Cares and UNICEF, which have been partners since 2008. It aims to further SM's advocacy to uphold the rights and welfare of children and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). Other projects spearheaded by the two organizations included the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Project wherein a portion of the sale of SM’s bottled water goes to the organization’s efforts to provide clean drinking water to various provinces in the country. To date, it has already helped more than 113,000 school children across the Philippines.

my blogger friends and I with the amazing cast of Sandosenang Sapatos
SM Cares, a division of SM Foundation Inc., is the corporate social responsibility arm of SM Prime Holdings, Inc. As a responsible mall developer, SM ensures that its CSR programs serve as a catalyst for positive change for the community. SM Cares has six advocacies, mainly which are programs for: Persons with Disabilities, Senior Citizens, Children and Youth, Women and Breastfeeding, Overseas Filipino Workers (The SM Global Pinoy), and the Environment.

Important Things to Know About UTI (Urinary Tract Infection)

$
0
0
A lot of medical conditions cause extreme discomfort, which make us wish they can be cured as soon as possible. One health issue I'm sure we all want to avoid is having Urinary Tract Infection (UTI). This is an infection that affects parts of the body's urinary system: kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra.

don't ignore the urge to pee!
According to medical practitioners, women are at a greater risk of developing UTI than men. It's the reason why we're always being told to wipe from "front to back" after using the toilet. Pregnant women, most especially, are often advised to take extra care not to develop UTI because it can cause premature birth and preeclampsia (a condition characterized by high blood pressure).

Did you know? UTI is one of the top reasons why people go to the doctor every year. One out of five women will experience UTI at some point in their lives and 80% will have repeat infections. Other individuals prone to UTI are those diagnosed with diabetes, have weak immune systems, have kidney stones, children born with abnormal urinary tracts, and patients who use catheters.

photo borrowed from healthychildren.org
Here are signs you may have UTI. Consult your doctor if you experience one or more of these symptoms:
  • a burning sensation while peeing
  • a frequent or intense urge to pee but only a little amount comes out when you do
  • a heavy feeling in various parts of the tummy
  • a feeling of being tired or shaky
  • cloudy, dark, bloody, or strange-smelling urine

If the infection has already reached the kidneys, you may also have:
  • pain or pressure in your back or lower abdomen
  • fever and chills
  • nausea or vomiting

photo borrowed from vox.com
Thankfully, there are ways to avoid having UTI:
  • drink plenty of water
  • go to the toilet immediately when you feel the urge to pee
  • wipe the genital area with clean tissue from front to back to prevent bacteria from entering the urinary tract
  • practice good hygiene
  • pee before sleeping at night

During a medical symposium recently held in Shangri-La Makati, internationally known speakers shared their knowledge and inputs about the management and treatment options for UTI. Some of the topics discussed included Management of Hospital and Community-Acquired Urinary Tract Infections, UTI in Pregnancy and Menopause, an Overview on Antibiotics Therapy, Management of Antibiotic Resistant Infections, and International and Local UTI Guidelines.

photo borrowed from thefilipinodoctor.com
What I gathered from the talks is the availability of various drugs to treat UTI. Some of these are concentration-dependent drugs while others are time-dependent ones. Although prescribing of treatments will depend on one's doctor, I learned that there's now a one-dose medicine that has been formulated to treat UTI.

If you also find it inconvenient to take several doses of medication in the course of several days to treat UTI, ask your doctor about Monurol (generic name: Fosfomycin trometamol). Please take note that this is a regulated drug that can only be bought with a bonafide prescription. For more information, you may also visit http://cathaydrug.ph.

* The SRP for a dose of Fosfomycin is P487.00

Allied Against Dengue Movement Encourages Filipinos to Help Defeat Dengue Fever

Information is power! By knowing what we are up against, we can be more proactive in helping our families avoid or manage preventable diseases like dengue. Yesterday, GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare Philippines, Inc. (GSKCH) announced that it has joined forces with organizations such as the Department of Health (DOH), Philippines Pharmacists Association (PPHA), Mercury Drug Corporation, SmartParenting.com.ph, and CNN Philippines, in a concerted effort to defeat dengue in the country.

the dengue virus is carried by an infected female Aedes Mosquito
Allied Against Dengue (AAD), a non-profit open platform, aims to empower healthcare providers, organizations, and communities; and holistically reduce the impact of dengue in the Philippines from prevention and control to management.

Did you know? Southeast Asia is the epicenter of dengue mosquito breeding because of our tropical climate. In the Philippines, the outbreak is spreading to more areas and affecting more lives such that cases rose significantly by 60 percent from 121,000 in 2014 to 200,415 in 2015. This year, the numbers went up 33 percent in the first quarter versus the same time frame last year.

According to GSK's Heather Pelier, dengue is rife in the Philippines and, unless we join forces, the disease will become the fastest spreading health threat in the country. "GSK was motivated to initiate Allied Against Dengue as we were concerned of the escalating hazard and effects of dengue on the nation including our employees and their families who have experienced the dreaded disease," she explained.

representatives of different organizations that allied against dengue
"Uniting forces and actions enable greater empowerment across stakeholders, education delivery to communities nationwide, and allow us to help people do more, feel better, and live longer," added Pelier stating that AAD is the catalyst to this solution with the ultimate goal to reduce the impact of dengue on Filipinos.

Through collaborative partnerships with the DOH, private institutions, healthcare providers, media influencers, and community leaders, the movement aims to lead change and create a bigger impact to society. GSK, together with other coalition partners, activated an ambitious roadmap that aims to achieve AAD's goal of reducing the burden of dengue on society through empowerment and education.

It is good to know that more than 1,200 pediatricians and pharmacists will be involved in the public education and awareness of dengue fever management across the country, which is aligned to and complements the World Health Organization (WHO) global strategy for prevention and control as well as DOH's initiatives. Alliance partners have pledged to leverage their core competencies and dedicate energy, funds, and resources to help reduce the incidence rate of, and deaths, caused by dengue fever.

dengue is preventable! don't let it affect your family!
By seeking to curb the incidence growth rate and make a real difference to the lives of Filipinos, AAD's strategies will include:
  • Distribution of 50,000 DOH primers to at least 5 public schools in dengue hotspots in Metro Manila; and 15,000 leaflets to 1,000 pediatricians and general practitioners
  • Education of proper dengue fever prevention and management to 20 health centers for Baranggay outreach programs
  • Implementation of Continuous Pharmacy Education (CPE) Program in identified chapters, targeting 200 pharmacists
  • Education and recruitment of at least 1000 Allies Against Dengue through employee engagement, online, and on ground activations.
These milestones are targeted to be achieved through the roll out of a series of initiatives including train-the-trainer programs, organized information centers through the coalition partners' networks, community education activations, and employee volunteers who will be part of and drive the community outreach at dengue hotspots.

WeatherPhilippines: Aiming to Change Disaster Statistics Through a #WeatherWiserNation

$

Every year, our country experiences an average of 10 to 20 typhoons and spends around 9 to 10 billion pesos on recovery initiatives. Sadly, around 958 fathers, mothers, and children lose their lives every time a deadly typhoon enters the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR)

let's all help build a #WeatherWiser Philippines!
According to WeatherPhilippines, the numbers should be enough to mobilize us to change our approach to disasters by switching from costly disaster-recovery methods to, instead, a more cost-effective disaster preparedness model that invests in early warning systems. How?

For many Filipinos, extreme weather conditions means higher possibility of deaths and economic damages. But, if we study and know more about the actual impact of weather in our lives, we can make better decisions that will not only benefit ourselves and our families, but our communities, as well!

know when to bring a cap and sunglasses or an umbrella and jacket
when going out by checking your local weather
By having localized weather data, businesses can also optimize productivity through wiser investments in specific locations in the Philippines. For instance, why put up a resort in an area where it rains most of the time? Ergo, weather data-driven decisions equals less loss, less cost, and more profits.

Likewise, with more accurate weather forecasts (because they're localized), schools and companies can cancel classes or work ahead of time to prevent students and employees from braving heavy rains or floods just to reach their destinations for that day.

a flooded street in Manila after a heavy rain
In case you're still not aware, WeatherPhilippines has been delivering free, more localized, and accurate weather information accessed through weather.com.ph and its mobile app since 2012. It complements the government's nationwide efforts on disaster risk reduction and aims to help build a #WeatherWiserNation by using weather information for socio-economic and sustainable development.

Founded by the Aboitiz Foundation, UnionBank, and MeteoGroup, WeatherPhilippines provides the country with a premier weather sensing and forecasting system made possible by technology, inclusive partnerships, and communication.

do gray skies mean it's going to rain?
check the WeatherPhilippines app/website to be sure!
As of 2016, there are now 780 Automated Weather Stations (AWS) nationwide (download the app  and check if your area is already covered!) in partnership with more than 568 Local Government Units (LGUs) and private sector companies. WeatherPhilippines has also trained more than a thousand public and private sector partners on weather.

These AWS deployment and weather trainings are sustained by annual donations of WeatherPhilippines' platinum donors: SM, LBC, Ayala Group, VistaLand, Nickel Asia Corporation (NAC), and International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI).

bloggers with our fellow #WeatherWiser influencers from the DepEd
Last week, our group of Manila-based bloggers took part in a social media training workshop, organized by WeatherPhilippines and Rappler, held at Summit Circle Hotel in Cebu through the generosity of CitySavings. There, we joined teachers from Cebu's Department of Education (DepEd) in coming up with plans on how to maximize social media and other forms of communication to help mobilize fellow Filipinos in preparing for disasters using located weather forecasts.

It was a fun afternoon of exchanging ideas amid laughter and camaraderie. We all enjoyed interacting with the jolly teachers who gamely participated in the activities. Say Hello to Beeffalo Antipolo!

Two years ago, my husband and I discovered a quaint restaurant in Marikina called Beeffalo by Hotrocks that serves one of the best beef steaks I've had (and have craved for, since) among other dishes.  Back then, the dynamic team behind Beeffalo shared with us about opening a second branch in Antipolo. Finally, hubby and I got to visit their new place last Saturday.

Yey, finally got to visit Beeffalo Antipolo!
Despite the distance from our house, we excitedly visited the restaurant to see and chat with owners, Mr. and Mrs. Louie and Girlie Abad and their business partner Ms. Caren Diaz, again. Our reunion, as expected, was fun-filled and once more lasted for hours :)

just some of Beeffalo's mouthwatering dishes
Here's sharing some of the new and also well-loved items on the menu that we had for our extended lunch: The Broccoli Cheese Soup is thick and savory. Just perfect to start off a meal and whet the appetite.

Broccoli Cheese Soup - P120.00
I also loved taking bites out of the crunchy thin crust of the Garlic and Mushroom Pizza. Like the other variant I tried before (the Margherita Biscuit Pizza), this one is filled with flavors I like as well.

Garlic and Mushroom Pizza - P195.00
My husband, a big fan of ribs, of course ordered his favorite Baby Back Ribs, basted with Beeffalo's signature barbecue sauce, that has very tender meat easily separated from the bones. If you order this one, make sure you eat it with its perfect companion, the Java Rice.

Baby Back Ribs full rack - P765.00, single with java rice - P285.00
Me? I would never miss ordering Beeffalo's Porterhouse Steak served with fresh vegetable salad and creamy mashed potatoes made from scratch. This remains one of my favorites in their menu because it's always cooked perfectly, just the way I like it. However, it now has been rivaled by a new dish!

Porterhouse Steak (250g) - P395.00, (450g) - P650.00
Java Rice - P55.00, Cucumber Lemonade P60.00 or P95.00 (unli)
As someone who enjoys eating sour food,  I fell in love with their new special Sizzling Beef Ribs in Tamarind Gravy. It's actually the classic Filipino sinigang deconstructed and served the Beeffalo way (two thumbs up, Ms. Girlie!). Just writing about it now tempts me to make the two hour trip to Antipolo! It is that good!

Sizzling Beef in Tamarind Gravy - P330.00
Don't fret though if you're a chicken lover. You can have your cravings, too, with the equally famous Beeffalo Wings with Blue Cheese Dip. Go for the combination of sweet with hot and spicy pieces that's great for sharing.

Wings (blue cheese dip not in photo) - P195.00
Aside from lunch or dinner, you may also want to visit Beeffalo to have some snacks in the afternoon. Choose from various sandwiches with decadent fillings!

Grilled Three-Cheese Sandwich with Tomato Soup - P225.00
The Grilled Three-Cheese Sandwich with Tomato Soup is a good combination to satisfy any appetite.

Cheesesteak Sandwich - P245.00
If you prefer sandwiches with meat, go for the Cheesesteak which is available as sandwich (ciabatta with fries) or wrap (tortilla with nachos). Either way, you'll definitely enjoy your tummy-filling meal.

Cheesesteak Wrap - P245.00
Lastly, we had Brazo de Mercedes to cap off a very satisfying and enjoyable meal.

Brazo de Mercedes - P125.00
With lots of chika, laughter, good food, and the amusing antics of Roy, Ms. Caren's adorable dog, it was a fun afternoon that I hope would be repeated one day soon in Alabang (because we've been bugging them to put up a branch here!) :)

Roy, the adorable but camera shy dog
For now, discover your favorite everyday comfort food, too, at the new Beeffalo branch located at the heart of M.L. Quezon Avenue in Antipolo City.

Theater Review: Upstart Production's Love/Sick at the Mind Museum

We are all in different kinds of relationships and they shape us into who we are and what we may still become. The other night, I watched a bittersweet comedy at the Mind Museum called Love/Sick by John Cariani, staged by Upstart Productions. This the first main-stream theatrical offering to be featured at the establishment's auditorium.

the amazing cast of Love/Sick
The show features nine vignettes exploring romantic relationships at various stages. The loosely connected stories tackle moments that range from the first meeting to dating to disillusionment and divorce. As the New York Times described, the critically-acclaimed series of plays "delivers laugh and some cleverness" and would most likely appeal to fans of Almost, Maine, another work written by Cariani.

Love/Sick, defined by Theater Mania as an "unromantic comedy," will make you smile, laugh, feel sad, think, and go "Awwww!" Whether you're single, married, or in an undefined relationship, there's a character or instance in the show that you would probably identify with.

John Cariani

According to Cariani, Love/Sick explores the blush of first love but also examines the happily ever after part—and how "ever after" is not always entirely happy. "Yes—finding love is a big deal. But holding onto love, staying in love—that’s the hard part," he wrote. "Love/Sick is about finding love, falling in love, trying to hang onto that love once you’ve found it, and losing love … and about how life goes on—and love goes on—even after it’s lost. I hope it leaves you feeling hopeful, hopeless, happy, and heartbroken."

The exceptional Philippine cast, who breathes life into the characters, includes media celebrity Rachel Alejandro, theater veterans Noel Rayos and Upstart co-founders Onyl Torres and Joel Trinidad (also the show's Director), up-and-coming performers Teenee Chan, Mica Pineda, Bibo Reyes, and Nicky Triviño (who serves as Assistant Director).

catch Love/Sick at the Mind Museum!
Plan to spend "a night at the museum" within the next two weekends to catch the bittersweet and darkly funny Love/Sick with your special someone or a friend you'd want to share a new memory with. You'll marvel at the cleverly written script, the minimalist set, and the talented actors who will definitely delight and amaze you.

Catch Love/Sick on August 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 19, and 20 (Fridays at 9 pm, Saturdays and Sundays at 8 pm) at the Mind Museum Auditorium, J.Y. Campos Park, 3rd Avenue, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig. Tickets are at P500 each. For ticket and show buying information, contact Upstart Productions at 09178116156 or upstarttickets@gmail.com. Love/Sick is presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc., New York.

Learn the Advantages of Pest Off!'s Rodent Control Products + Blog Giveaway

Any homeowner knows that no matter how much you try you keep the area in and around one's house as clean as possible, there will always be chances of experiencing pest infestations due to various factors.

New WBL giveaway! Read on …
For instance, if your area is prone to flooding, mice and rat poop may pose leptospirosis risks to people in the community. Likewise, when a neighbor puts out rodent poison around their property, the pests tend to transfer to other places such as your house where they end up dying.

Now that the rainy days are here, we must all be more proactive in protecting our families against diseases as well as the destruction rodents do to stuff such as food items, clothes, and even books!

Pest Off! Rat Catcher Glue Boards
cardboard (2 pcs./set) - P142.75, wood board (2pcs./set) - P148.75

Pest Off!, a trusted name in household pest control products offers a wide variety of items. In fact, we've been using the Pest Off! Roach Trap at home for a long time and I find it very effective when placed inside the cabinet under the sink.

Now, I am glad to have a supply of Pest Off!'s rodent control line because it gives me peace of mind that the next time I see a little mouse scurrying about in the kitchen, I have baits and glue boards I can use to eliminate it fast before it can do any damage.

Pest Off! Ready to Use Cereal Baits
100g - P69.25, 50g - P44.75
Pest Off! Ready-to-Use Cereal Bait contains a 2nd generation anticoagulant compound called Brodifacoum. It effectively and efficiently eliminates rats and mice, and only needs a SINGLE feed to take effect. Other brands contain active ingredients (Warfarin and Coumatetralyl) categorized as 1st generation anticoagulants or multiple-dose rodenticides. For those who don't know, anticoagulants prevent blood clotting that leads to internal hemorrhaging, which eventually results to rodent death.

Pest Off! Glue Boards, on the other hand, are rat and mice catchers designed for modern living. They are:

two sizes of glue boards for rats (left) and mice (right)
red pen used for size illustration purposes
  • Convenient to use. Set up is quick and hassle-free. Just place them along travel routes of mice and rats. Disposal is also easy. Just put the board and trapped rat inside a plastic bag tied tightly. The pest will eventually die of dehydration or asphyxiation. If you advocate for animal rights, make it a swift death by killing the rat or mouse with a thick piece of wood before disposal.
  • Effective. The board's strong adhesive easily traps passing rodents. As they try to escape, the more their paws and, eventually, their bodies, will stick to the board.
  • Safe. Pest Off! uses non-toxic adhesive. In case it gets in contact with your skin, just wipe away with mineral or baby oil. In addition, you'll have peace of mind that no human fingers will get hurt or severed as in the case of using traditional rat traps.
Pest Off! Mice Catcher Glue Boards (4 pcs./set)
regular scent - P90.25, peanut and cheese scents - P96.25 each
  • Reasonably priced. Piecewise, Pest Off! is more affordable than its competitors. The glue boards come in sets of 2's and 4's instead of singles or 3's.
  • More choices. Pest Off! offers different board sizes according to the pests you may see at home. These also come in different board materials (cardboard, wood board, and plastic board) to suit consumers' needs. What actually delighted me upon opening my box of Pest Off! supplies were the pleasant scents of peanut butter (like the sandwich!) and cheese (smells like popcorn)! I think rats and mice would really be attracted to those! :)
Pest Off! Rat Catcher Glue Boards in Peanut Butter and Cheese Scents
(2 pcs./set) - P157.25 each
Take note that glue boards should be used indoors and in normal conditions. Make sure that the room floor is neither oily nor greasy and that the room is not exposed to too much dust or sand.

Pest Off! is owned by Global Winds Corporation (GWC), a duly registered company with the Food and Drug Administration as a Household/Urban Hazardous Substances Distributor/Importer/Wholesaler. Pest Off! products are widely distributed nationwide in major supermarkets, groceries, and hardware stores. GWC also carries other products you may also want to check out such as:
  • Pest Off! Complete Insect Killer - an odorless spray specifically formulated to eliminate cockroaches, mosquitoes, houseflies, fleas, and other flying insects without the unpleasant kerosene odor
  • Pest Off! Roach Trap - a ready to use cockroach bait enclosed in a plastic bait station that has 4 small openings. Each bait station is effective up to a radius of 1 meter and can last up to 3 months.
  • Pest Off! Cockroach Gel - a cockroach bait in gel form that is convenient to apply in cracks and crevices because it comes in a syringe applicator and effectively kills cockroaches for up to 90 days.
  • Pest Off! Fly Paper - catches more flies effectively because it is 17% bigger than others. Pre-cut holes help form the thick paper into different shapes to suit the needs of the user.
  • Pest Off! Roach and Ant Killer Chalk - an affordable cockroach and ant killer that comes in boxes of 2's.
GWC's complete line up of products
This month, Pest Off! and Write, Breathe, Live are giving away two gift packages (worth around P1,000 each) composed of everything in the rodent control line! If you want to be 1 of this blog's 2 winners, please join through the Rafflecopter widget below:

Scents can give us a way to control how we feel whether we'd like to boost our mood or take away the stresses from a long day. JAC Tripon, a marketing practitioner turned scent crafter, is a firm believer in the power of aromas. It was her dream to provide the Philippine market with quality and long lasting scents at affordable prices.

Celebrate life in the tropics with FAVORI’s Tropical Blast scent,
available in Aroma Oils for aerators, diffusers,
and burner devices as well as Reed Diffusers
This is why she decided to start FAVORI, a handcrafted home fragrances brand that allows customers to create a favorite feeling through their selected scents. FAVORI means favorite in the French language. It was chosen to express JAC's desire to capture every individual's preferred scent in each variant she designs.

"I want my customers to be able to identify with a scent that they can call their favorite," shared JAC who understands that scent preferences vary depending on a person's personality, mood, lifestyle, and specific needs.

Channel some cool mediterranean inspiration with
the FAVORI Rain Dance and Olive Branch Aroma Oils

Personally, I really appreciate places that smell really nice. It's not surprising then that hotels even have their own signature scents made to boost the ambiance in their lobbies. At home, I often use air sprays to make a room smell fragrant or to eliminate unpleasant odors from the kitchen and bathroom.

Imagine my joy when I received a FAVORI aerator and several scented oils to try! I love how this helps do away with repeated spraying to maintain a scent in a room. I just put water and some drops of oil inside the container, put on the pretty leaf-designed lid, plug it in a wall socket, and turn it on for several hours. It's fascinating to gaze at the changing colors of the light reflected on the water while the air turns fragrant in minutes.

our FAVORI leaf aerator and first set of lovely-scented aroma oils
I've found that my family enjoys using FAVORI most inside the bedroom when the air conditioner is on. I think my son with special needs even sleeps better when I use the Olive Branch (Nurturing) scent because it calms him down. My favorite, so far though, is the Cranberry Wine (Cheering) scent maybe because I've always loved the smell of fruits and flowers. Sniffing the air when this aroma is around honestly lifts my mood.

FAVORI offers a scent for every nook of the house, office, or retail area to enhance the ambiance of any space, eliminate unwanted odors, and refresh the air with a cleansing anti-bacterial agent. FAVORI scents range from sweet to stimulating, upbeat to relaxing, and zesty to fresh among others. Each one was researched, tested, and carefully crafted to improve peoples' wellbeing.

Feel balanced and bright with one of FAVORI’s newest scents,
Pink Grapefruit available in aroma oils for aerators,
diffusers and burner devices as well as reed diffusers
Aside from the aerator, FAVORI also has a wide selection of Aroma Oils, Reed Diffusers, Air Sprays, Soy Aroma Candles, and Aroma Pouches. There are likewise numerous options for Aerators, Diffusers, and Burner Devices in stylish designs.

Plus, the brand also considers the wellbeing of the environment by being a recycling advocate. I am actually excited to use up the existing oils I have so I can return the empty FAVORI bottles and get discounts on my next purchases! :)

Reward yourself with a massage and make sure to include
FAVORI’s Massage Oils (in Eucalyptus and Lavender scents)
and Soy Aroma Candles in your experience.
Get a FREE Leaf Aerator by collecting 10 stamps in your FAVORI Rewards promo card. Every P1,000 purchase of any FAVORI scent products or aroma devices entitles customers to one stamp. The promo runs until October 15, 2016. Redemption of leaf aerators is until December 15, 2016.

Kiss Aging Goodbye at Watsons, Get Huge Discounts, and Win Shopping Points!

There are a lot of myths and misconceptions when it comes to aging. What remains true, though, is that we age faster when we subject ourselves to stress and bad habits. Plus, our hectic and modern lifestyles are not helping make us look younger!

Fact: my friend Lou and I always get mistaken to be younger than we are ;)
Did you know? Signs of aging– both internal and external – start to manifest as early as our 20s? For instance, those cute little laugh lines, when not treated as early as possible, might stay on and become full-fledged crow’s feet. Likewise, dry skin that isn’t moisturized as needed will likely appear wrinkled faster.

Thankfully, Watsons Philippines has just launched its latest anti-aging campaign to help thousands of Filipinos Kiss Aging Goodbye. According to Viki Encarnacion, Watsons Marketing Director, the campaign is “an educational effort with a two-pronged approach, teaching our customers how to prevent the negative effects of aging by taking care of themselves inside and out. We are literally helping people ‘Look good. Feel great.’ And it’s a wonderful thing.”

look good and feel great with Watsons' anti-aging products
Here’s how the two-pronged approach works:

1) Look good when you’ve been bad. That’s a challenge most of us face because we abuse our bodies during our younger years with long days at work and late nights out, to the point that wrinkles, circles, saggy skin, and dark spots can seem almost inevitable. Thankfully, if you just take the right measures early on, you can prevent the physical manifestations of aging from ruling your future regardless of your past.

To help kiss those wrinkles goodbye, there’s L’Oreal Dermo Expertise Revitalift Range, a skin care solution inspired by laser that promises younger looking skin in 4 weeks! Or, bring back your baby skin with Collagen by Watsons Intensive Nourishing Facial Mask, enriched with Collagen and Vitamin E to repair dryness and enhance skin’s elasticity.

L'Oreal's Revitalift Range available at Watsons
2) Feel so great inside, it shows on the outside. This is the second lesson in keeping ourselves young. Although topicals and creams are great to start an anti-aging regimen, you’ll only be scratching the surface. You see, a lot of the signs of physical aging is caused by the body breaking down on the inside. Two of the most common culprits are calcium deficiency and lack of collagen.

To help prevent that haggard look by giving yourself the added nutrition you need in the form of food supplements and ingestible beauty aids. One of Watsons’ favorites is the iVi Collagen Ready-To-Drink, with 10,000 mg of Collagen that helps smoothen fine lines and lighten dark spots for that forever-young glow.

collagen products available at Watsons
Aside from the above-mentioned items, there are lots of other brands carrying anti-aging solutions. Get up to 50% off on Olay, Celeteque, Belo, Ponds, Neutrogena, Cosmo Skin, Jergens, Biore, Dove, Oral B, Watsons Private Label, Biofit, Capsinesis, Lesofat, Real Green, Be Well, Myra E, Potencee, MySlim, Acne Care, KB, SNL, Cosmo, Elite Collagen, Top O, Nutraplus, Watsons Generics, Organique AcaiNow, Fine, Pearl Coix, Trulife, and Youtheory. Click here to see the full list of products under each brand and the corresponding discounts (there are also buy-one-take-one and buy-two-take-one offers) given from August 4 to September 21, 2016.

But, wait! Before you head on to the Watsons branch nearest you, remember keep these three things in mind:
  • If you want to keep your looking younger, make sure your beauty bases are covered from nutrition to skincare, inside and out
  • You’re never too young to start looking old. Start preventive maintenance in your early 20s. If that ship has sailed, start as early as now!
  • There’s no better place to start your anti-aging regimen than the store that always brings you great beauty advice, amazing products, and fantastic prices.

Oh, and look for products with Kiss Aging Goodbye stickers because 1,000,000 shopping points will also be given away! Read the full mechanics, here. See you at Watsons for the Kiss Aging Goodbye sale!

Azalea Hotels & Residences: 10 Reasons Why It's a Great Family Destination in Baguio City, Philippines

I've always wanted to come back to Baguio City with my family. The last time we were there together was more than 10 years ago. We unwisely planned the trip for Holy Week and had a difficult time finding good accommodations as well as got stuck in a horrible 9-hour traffic going back to Manila. That was when we decided to come back someday when the city won't be too crowded with tourists.

#TeamFloresca at Azalea
Finally, we had a chance to return to Baguio after the summer rush of visitors is over -- and we had an awesome time! :) Together with a few friends and their families, we excitedly went North one fine Wednesday morning last July. I was so happy that our eldest son was able to get away from work for a few days but quite sad that our youngest had to stay behind with my mom because he had to go to school.

the beauty that is Azalea Baguio
It was quite surprising how faster it is to travel to Baguio nowadays thanks to the SCTex and TPLex routes. We arrived at Azalea Hotels & Residences Baguio just in time for a delicious lunch at Tradisyon Coffee Shop. But first, we checked in our rooms and were delighted to find out how lovely and spacious our well-appointed two-bedroom suite was which had complete living, dining, and kitchen facilities!

the dining and living room area of an Azalea suite
Indeed Azalea Baguio is a very ideal destination for families and friends who travel together in big groups. It has 99 well-equipped and multi-occupant apartment suite rooms: 46 Deluxe, 17 One-Bedroom, 33 Two-Bedroom, and 3 Three-Bedroom that provide guests a great venue to bond over home-cooked meals and fun conversations.

Rey claiming first dibs on the Swiss Miss sachet he found in the kitchen
We didn't get to use the kitchen facilities much though because we got busy going around Baguio to quaint and charming places as well as areas that got our creative juices flowing (more about those in another blog post).

at one of the charming places we went to
(find out where in my other blog post :D)
For now, here's listing down the top things #TeamFloresca loves about Azalea:

1. The rooms are lovely! Nothing beats a hotel room that has all the amenities we need for a home away from home. The beds (including the sofa bed!) are so comfortable to sleep in. For two nights, all of us, especially our son with special needs, were able to get long and very restful sleep to fuel us for another day of exciting activities.

our James sleeping well through the night
simply means the bed is definitely a comfortable one
2. The food in Tradisyon is really good. We ate several meals in the hotel's restaurant, which always ended with filled tummies and smiles on our faces. On two mornings, I zeroed in on mushroom omelettes and the danggit (dried and fried fish) during breakfast because they were some of the best I've had in months! I also love this dining place's interior!

enjoying our yummy pizza and pasta dinner
3. There's fast WiFi! More than just posting on social media, for me, good communication lines are a must when traveling so I can keep in touch with members of my family left behind (like my youngest son and mom, in this case). Aside from landline calls or text messages via mobile phone, it's easier to chat via Facebook, post photos, and keep updated about each other from both ends.

a photo Tradisyon's accent wall is something you'd love to post online, too!
4. Transportation (with a good driver!) can be arranged to and from Manila. There are not many hotels who provide this kind of service so we are very thankful that Azalea took care of this part of our trip as well. The hotel likewise provided us a van we could use to go around Baguio with. Talk about convenience! :)

PWD access ramps made it easier to get James in and out of Azalea
5. Handicap accessibility and 24-hour medical assistance. Traveling with a child who has special needs is challenging. Thankfully, we have a foldable wheelchair that was easy to push going in and out of the hotel via gently sloping PWD ramps and spacious elevators. In addition, one of the nicest things Azalea's management did was to insist for one of their nurses to join us during our tours around Baguio! We didn't ask nor expected it but we are deeply grateful for having Nurse Meg Ferrer who helped watch over James while the rest of the family explored areas nearby that were no longer wheelchair-accessible. Thank you sooooo much, Meg and Azalea! :)

James with Nurse Meg who is super, super nice
and really great to talk to
6. Thoughtful acts of kindness. Opening the door to one's room and finding a big basket filled with fruits as well as little boxes of cookies, chocolates, and chocolate-dipped strawberries was already very much appreciated. But when my oldest son (who works on night shift) decided to forgo dinner twice to catch up on sleep, Azalea staff offered to bring up food on a big plate to our room so Rey can eat when he wakes up around midnight. Again, that kind of service was unexpected and this mom sincerely says thank you from the bottom of my heart :)

fresh flowers, fruits, and sweet treats
7. Proximity to nearby attractions. Azalea Baguio is just a few minutes away from Session Road and walking distance to Teacher's Camp and some food establishments like a Korean resto just outside the driveway. We planned to go running at the track oval but were, unfortunately, refused entry because my barefoot runner husband was not wearing any shoes. And so we headed towards Camp John Hay instead where we had a great time running all the way to Choco-late de Batirol (located around 2.5km from the hotel). It drizzled a bit so we got wet but the cold feeling was quickly washed away by a hot shower the moment we got back to our room.

photo op in between a practice run around Camp John Hay :D
8. Choices of themed rooms. We were able to take a peek into other rooms aside from ours and were delighted to find various offerings that are ideal for families with young kids as well as couples who would like to have a romantic getaway. I could imagine ladies saying "Awww!" when they get surprised by their special someone with a room filled with rose petals and creatively-folded towels! On our last night, the moms and dads did videoke while the kids watched movies in separate function rooms.

excuse us but this room calls for some cheesiness hahaha!
9. Quiet location. Azalea is tucked in a secluded hill, promising both the peace and gentleness of country living. It is so great to wake up in the morning and stay for a while on the balcony to gaze at the surroundings and watch the sun bathe the trees while the fog and dew melt away.

one of my best morning shots ever was taken from
our room's balcony on Azalea Baguio's 5th floor
10. It is, overall, a beautiful place. Azalea's structure resembles that of a ski-resort which, I've read is a clever inspiration for the Summer Capital's first vacation residence that brings thoughts of family vacations and friendly holidays. The facade as well as everything inside the establishment are definitely world-class and would delight both local and foreign tourists.

Nanbantei of Tokyo Opens in Alabang Town Center

I've always loved eating Japanese dishes, especially miso soup, shrimp/prawn tempura, and sushi. I haven't really paid attention to grilled dishes though … until I got to try Nanbantei of Tokyo's yakitori items for the first time. In Japan, the term yakitori means grilled chicken. But while there are chicken items on Nanbantei's menu, diners can also choose from an extensive array of grilled beef, pork, seafood, and vegetables.

Nanbantei is now in Alabang!
Thankfully, there's now a Nanbantei branch in Alabang Town Center, which made the restaurant accessible for me, my family, and everybody living in South Metro Manila who love food grilled the Japanese way. I am excited to bring the boys there, soon, because I am positive they would love many of the dishes on the menu.

lovely ambiance!
As a little backgrounder, Nanban means foreigner while Tei means rest house or teahouse. Combined, Nanbantei means a place where guests can unwind and have something to eat or drink after a long day of work.

Namayasai
Hubby and I started lunch with fresh vegetable sticks called Namayasai dipped in Nanbantei's signature miso paste and a bowl of flavorful Miso Soup. Both perfectly whetted our appetites!

Miso Soup - P85
Next, we sampled a Best Sellers Platter composed of 21 sticks that includes Aspara Maki (asparagus wrapped with pork), Tebasaki (chicken wings), Pork Garlic Yaki (pork with garlic flavor), Shiso Maki (pork with Shiso leaf), Negima (chicken meat and leeks), Corn (on the cob but can be requested to be served shredded), and Poteto Maki (potato wrapped with bacon). I partnered each bite with Shiitake Rice that's topped with mushroom and nori strips. Yum!

Best Sellers Platter - P995
you can also order Yakitori ala carte (2 sticks per order) for P100 and up
Of course, a visit to a Japanese restaurant shouldn't be without an order of Ebi Tempura! I love how the breading is thin enough to make way for more juicy shrimp in each bite.

Ebi Tempura - P385
We also tried the Aburi Shrimp and Aburi Salmon plus the Assorted Sushi Platter that has a little bit of everything and would satisfy any sushi lover's cravings.

Aburi Shrmip and Salmon - P75 each
To cap off our satisfying meal, we shared a cup of Black Sesame Ice Cream that we just discovered for the first time. It is soooo good! Make sure to also order that when you drop by one of Nanbantei's branches.

Assorted Sushi Platter - P395
There are still many items in the menu that I would definitely love to try in future visits. What surprised me most though was how affordable the prices are! So don't be intimidated by the brand's name and posh-looking interior. They serve Great Flavors at Prices Without Your Reach! In addition, it feels homey and comfortable inside, you'll love hanging out there with your friends and family members.

Black Sesame Ice Cream - P100

The members of my family are fond of sandwiches. We enjoy eating basic sandwiches (that are simply made up of two slices of bread and a yummy spread) as well as sandwiches loaded with lots of other ingredients for breakfast, snacks, and even at midnight.

making midnight snacks with Son #4
On most mornings, when everyone needs to rush to go to school or work, we are already content to bite into a sandwich made yummy with Lady's Choice Ham or Chicken Spread. Those two are staples inside our refrigerator along with Lady's Choice Mayonnaise that's not only great for Macaroni Salad, but also complements slices of ham and cheese when making sandwiches.

Recently, our regular spreads got some competition! We discovered two new flavors that could definitely rival our old favorites. Now, there's Lady's Choice Roast Beef Spread and Lady's Choice Chicken BBQ Spread that are also both delicious and are each made with real beef and chicken.

two new Lady's Choice Sandwich Spread variants
The good thing is, we'll have more options to choose from any time we want to make a sandwich! The boys already have tasted both flavors and, like me, find it hard to play favorites :)

Let's just say alternating between several Lady's Choice Sandwich Spread flavors will make each sandwich moment a more tummy-filling one for all of us.

Imagine … roast beef or chicken bbq that's easy to spread!
How about your family? Do you prefer #ChickenOrBeef? Post a comment below if you've already tried one or both variants. Plus, stay tuned because I just might be hosting a Lady's Choice giveaway soon for my readers who would also love to try these two new flavors! :)

Anne Curtis Once More Runs for Children to Commemorate UNICEF's 70th Anniversary

It's amazing how one whole year has already passed since UNICEF and its Celebrity Advocate for Children Anne Curtis initiated the Heroes for Children Run. I was there when Anne jubilantly crossed the finish line for her first 21k run and admired her determination to conquer her goals (read that story, here).

with fellow runner, Anne :)
This year, she is once more calling on runners to support UNICEF and Heroes for Children Run 2016. happening on September 4, 2016 at the SM Mall of Asia grounds. During the press conference held in F1 Hotel the other day, Anne was asked how she survived her first half marathon and she admitted that however hard it was to push herself, "Best effort talaga but I knew what I was running for and that kept me going."

Her motivation is UNICEF's First 1,000 Days campaign for children's health and nutrition needs. "I was deeply inspired by the support we received during last year's run. From children with disabilities to serious runners, the public came together for a great cause. This year, I'm inviting everyone once again to be a hero for children," implored Anne.

Anne Curtis, Lotta Sylwander, and Coach Rio Dela Cruz
Lotta Sylwander, UNICEF Philippines Country Representative, shared that for the past 70 years, the organization has worked to improve the lives of the most disadvantaged, vulnerable, and excluded children around the world. "Despite the many gains, the lives and futures of millions of children are still in jeopardy. In the Philippines, one out of three children under the age of five suffers from chronic malnutrition -- the effects of which can be permanent, irreversible, and even fatal after two years of age," she explained. "UNICEF believes every child should have a fair chance at life."

To those who are not familiar with this advocacy, the First 1,000 Days programme focuses on prenatal and early childhood interventions to prevent undernutrition, including quality care for mothers, proper nutrition and complementary feeding, and life-saving treatment for severe acute malnutrition. This is very important for every child as the effect of good health and nutrition lasts well into adulthood and is a key factor in breaking the cycle of poverty.

what comprises the first 1000 days in a child's life
According to Sylwander, if we have well-fed and healthy children, they can go to school and find jobs when they grow up. "Proper nutrition and nurturing on the first 1,000 days will help children grow, learn, and earn." She further stressed that reducing malnutrition not only saves lives but also lowers health costs, builds human capital, and spurs economic growth.

In 2015, more than 3,200 runners raised PhP3 million for the benefit of the First 1,000 Days programme. This year, Anne and UNICEF hopes to attract even more running enthusiasts to raise additional funds for the campaign.

Heroes for Children Run advocates answer questions from the media
Sylwander expressed how grateful they are for Anne's dedication and significant contributions in raising awareness and funds for children in need. "Anne's power lies in her sincerity and genuine passion in everything she does. Through her support, we will continue to make a huge difference for children in need."

Online registration is ongoing at www.runrio.com/HeroesforChildren until August 19 while in-store registration ends by August 28, 2016 at the following Chris Sports outlets: SM Mall of Asia, SM Megamall, SM City North Edsa, SM City BF Homes, Glorietta, Market! See Baguio in a New Light via Azalea Hotels & Residences' Fun Family Tour Package

When in Baguio, where do you frequently go? For many tourists, the regular stomping grounds usually include Burnham Park, Mines View Park, ukay stores, and several popular dining places that you must have seen over and over on your Facebook feed or were recommended by family and friends.

#TeamFloresca at Camp John Hay
The next time you and your family go to Baguio, consider booking a room at Azalea Hotels & Residences (read my hotel review, here) and asking their travel concierge to help plan your Baguio holiday. Azalea can point you to new and not-so-well known destinations in the city as well as suggest activities that you and your loved ones would enjoy doing together.

pine trees and clouds on a beautiful day in Baguio

Recently, my family and I, together with several friends' families stayed in Azalea and had a great time seeing other parts of Baguio that we would most likely overlook if we were the ones who planned the trip. On our first day, after checking in at the hotel and having lunch, we went to Tam-awan Village, Baguio's Garden in the Sky, in Pinsao Proper.

entrance to Tam-awan Village
There, we feasted our eyes on indigenous works of art that feature beautiful Cordilleran craftsmanship. The village is a venue for art exhibits and workshops that aim to foster a deeper appreciation of the Cordillera people's cultural heritage. We were even fortunate to catch a group of dancers who were being filmed for a TV documentary.

a glimpse of Cordilleran culture
It was quite rainy that afternoon so we didn't get to catch the sunset that they say can be magnificent when viewed from Tam-awan (which aptly means vantage point). Our group had individual portraits done, though, by three artists. I honestly couldn't see my resemblance in the drawing made for me, but I am happy how my sons' portraits turned out.

The next morning, we went to go horseback riding. Many of us thought we'd be going to Mines View Park where horses for photoops usually are. We didn't know that Camp John Hay has horses (without the ridiculous colors) for rent and trails to explore.

my friends' son, Ben, confidently handling his horse
I also mistakenly assumed (minus points for not asking questions!) that getting on a horse would be just a few minutes, enough for some photo ops. So I had my hubby hold my phone to take a few shots before my horse's handler led me towards a trail followed by the horses of my other companions. It was minutes later when we were told we'll be riding for about an hour along the Yellow Trail!

mother and son on horseback
Despite feeling quite bummed that I left my phone with hubby, I felt really proud of my son, Gab, who rode his horse without the aid of any handler! I, on the other hand, was worried that my skittish horse might suddenly bolt so I insisted my guide to hold the ropes all throughout the ride. I knew my butt and thighs would hurt the next day but the experience of passing through underneath pine trees and feeling the cold gentle wind on my face was worth the impending pain.

Mommy Emma and Maki
Thankfully, we met the San Juan family at a clearing so I got to ask my friend Ryan to take some photos of us while his lovely wife Emma and pretty daughter Maki rode a horse nearby. Their son, Ben, looks very comfortable on top of his own horse and went ahead with us back to the starting point.

a lovely "prenup" shot by our son, Gab :)
Before leaving the area, we found a lot of pretty spots as backgrounds for our photo ops. Needless to say, we grabbed the opportunity to take as many as we could and I am very happy with the results. The mommies and daddies even got some great "prenup" shots! :p

a picnic under the pine trees
After the horseback riding sessions, we went to the picnic grounds where Azalea staff prepared a picnic for us. The small kids had fun running around the spacious area while the adults enjoyed the peaceful ambiance that you can only feel outdoors away from the bustling city.

hot and rich chocolate drink that's perfect for a rainy afternoon
Thankfully, we were already replete with good food by the time it started to drizzle as it happens during the afternoons during our trip. We went back to the vans and were brought to Choco-Late de Batirol, a charming place that serves hot chocolate and Filipino delicacies like bibingka and suman. There, I got to chat longer with fellow mom, Nike, who had a lot of good and funny stories to tell.

waiting for the hot choco and local delicacies
We got back to Azalea around 4PM, the ideal time when hubby and I normally go out for practice runs. So we did and roamed the roads of Camp John Hay to clock in 5.4 kilometers in less than an hour.

one of the best places for a practice run!
After a lovely dinner at Tradisyon, Nike, hubby, our son Gab, and I made a quick trip to the Night Market at Harrison Road where I searched for a bigger jacket for James (scored two at very low prices!) while hubby happily bought a pair of Converse shoes.

parents' night out
We would have liked to stay longer but I was afraid we'd be tempted to shop until midnight and we had to get back to the videoke night bonding with our fellow moms and dads. I had fun chatting with new friends Jana and Amanda and learning that we have a lot of things in common.

bursts of colors as seen from the highway
Early the next morning, we headed out to La Trinidad to go strawberry picking. Before we reached it, we stopped by Sitio Botiwtiw along the highway to take photos of the recently painted houses that look like a huge mural on a hill. It was hard to find a good shot though because of numerous electric cables. We heard the view would be best from the top the hill across where the houses are but we didn't have enough time, nor the permission, to do so. Maybe in a future trip? :)

kids and strawberries make great combinations
Upon reaching the Strawberry Fields though, we found out that strawberries are no longer in season (they were, in fact, being sold at P100 per styrofoam pack!) so we just bought bundles of lettuce, strawberries, strawberry ice cream, and strawberry taho, which delighted the young ones and young-once.

my boys enjoying strawberry ice cream
I admired several beautiful paintings displayed on the side of the parking lot and the artist tried to sell me one but I ran out of enough cash and the ATMs were located in the city center. Too bad, I would really like to have one of those hanging in one wall of our house. Someday, I hope I could come back and help that talented artist earn extra funds for his family.

Before going back to Azalea, we dropped by Arca's Yard along Ambuklao Road. It is a charming place filled with beautiful art pieces as well as lots of nooks and crannies for photo shoots. Aside from this nice family photo we got, check the other one included in my Azalea hotel review, here.

#FlorescaFamily at Arca's Yard
We got to try the camote pie and cloud tea at Arca's yard and they are both good! I recommend having those as an afternoon or mid-morning snack (like we did) while enjoying the beautiful views the place has to offer.

mid-morning snack at Arca's Yard
Pretty soon, we had to go back to Azalea to pack our stuff and get ready to check out after lunch. It was such a lovely three-day trip that my family and I would definitely remember forever. I pray that my sons would cherish the memories we made together and allow those to become inspirations to also take time and be with their loved ones when they already have families of their own :)
