Lady's Choice Sandwich Spread Recipe: Easy Roast Beef Steak Sandwich

$

We are a family of sandwich lovers and we often make sandwiches using several ingredients to maximize flavors and the enjoyment of eating our creations together. One of our favorites is assembling roast beef sandwiches.

making a sandwich is always a fun affair in our home
The good news is, we have recently leveled up this recipe by replacing Lady's Choice Mayonnaise with the new Lady's Choice Roast Beef Spread that perfectly complements the thinly sliced roast beef I usually buy from the supermarket.

my boys, the sandwich fans :)
Here's sharing the simple recipe of the Easy Roast Beef Steak Sandwich that you can make in less than 30 minutes. Depending on the number of your family members (that's why I'm not specifying exactly how many), you will need:
  • several thin slices of beef (I usually buy precooked ones from Shopwise that already has some seasoning but you can opt to slice your own then just season it with salt and pepper
  • 1-2 tbsps butter
  • Lady's Choice Roast Beef Spread
  • several pieces of bread (mini baguette, ciabatta, or hotdog buns)
  • several pieces of tomato slices
  • several pieces of cheese slices
  • several pieces of lettuce leaves

easy to prepare ingredients
Procedure:

1. Pan fry seasoned beef in a pan with butter over medium-hight heat until cooked. Do not overcook.
2. Spread Lady's Choice Roast Beef Spread on the sliced side of the bread
3. Arrange the beef slices and other ingredients on the bread. You may also add sliced mushrooms sautéed in butter if you also love mushrooms like we do.
4. Serve and enjoy.

roast beef steak sandwiches are made even better
with Lady's Choice Roast Beef Spread!
Let me know under this blog post if you have prepared this recipe and how your family liked it! :) You can also post a photo on your social media accounts and use the hashtags #LadysChoice and #ChickenOrBeef to show which of the two new Lady's Choice flavors you also like best. Check out my other blog post about both variants, here. There are actually so many ways to enjoy them. You can even invent your own recipes!

Daiso Japan, the number one supplier of living ware goods and more popularly known for its 100 yen stores in Japan, teamed up for the second time with Cosplay.ph Organization, Inc. in this year's biggest and most popular cosplay event in the Philippines

Cherry Blossom tree!
The much-awaited Cosplay Mania 2016 was recently held in SMX Convention Center this past weekend. It was attended not only by cosplayers but also by hobbyists, artists, and performers who engaged in cosplay solo showdowns, costume building contests, and exciting team battles.

Spiderman overload with these creative young people
My husband and I dropped by to admire the creativity of young and young-at-heart Filipinos who love cosplaying. Expectedly, we saw a lot of familiar characters that range from anime and cartoons to movie superheroes and villains. My favorite would have to be an adorable kid named Princess Margaret in a Sailor Moon costume who gamely posed for a photo with me.

cutest Sailor Moon cosplayer, ever

Aside from being wowed by all the creative getups, guests also got to do fun activities in various booths using the Con Quest stamp card. We weren't able to find all of them but had fun with those we had a chance to visit.

I was able to make a paper crane!
I enjoyed learning how to make an origami paper crane at the Embassy of Japan booth. The activity reminded me of the song Thousand Cranes by Hiroshima that remain one of my favorites from the '80s era. Daiso Japan, on the other hand, had a lovely Cherry Blossom tree that everyone can take a picture with.

anime sing and dance group competition
Cosplay fans enjoyed browsing Daiso's shelves filled with authentic products from Daiso Industries Ltd. Japan. These include Japanese snacks, makeup essentials, and kawaii hair and fashion accessories to complete any cosplayer's look.

a very timely costume since Conjuring 2 was just released recently
and Halloween is just around the corner :D
Although Cosplay Mania has already concluded, Daiso Japan stores are still there to serve you. Visit one of its branches and have fun checking out all the cool merchandise composed of a wide assortment of unique products -- from home and kitchen ornaments, office knick-knacks, and beauty essentials as well as interesting items that are practical and collectible. Prices start at P88 but, if you're lucky, there sometimes are sale items that are sold for as low as P25!

Festival Mall's Pink October 2016 Campaign Marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month with Unity in Pink

We now live in modern times and yet, despite advances in technology, 1 in 13 Filipino women is still diagnosed with breast cancer (BC), with most cases being discovered too late. One of the reasons for this is the lack of awareness about the medical condition.

women from the South supporting breast cancer awareness
This month, Festival Mall in Alabang, Muntinlupa is once more holding its Pink October campaign for the third year to help push for early detection and awareness of breast cancer, one of the top women's health issues in the Philippines

Since 2013, Festival Mall has partnered with breast cancer and women's health organizations such as the ICanserve Foundation, Stage Zero by Project Pink, the Asian Hospital Charities, and the Gender and Development (GAD) Office of Muntinlupa City to help promote women's health and early detection of breast cancer.

representatives of partner organizations supporting Unity in Pink
Unity in Pink was launched recently at River Park, hosted by James Deakin who brought his famous Pink Panther along. This is a car he painted after his mom and aunt were diagnosed with breast cancer. It is one of the ways he helps spread the word about breast cancer awareness. He encouraged us to also write on the car to show our support for the campaign. Having two aunts who were also diagnosed with BC, of course I was more than willing to sign! Besides, how cool was that?! :)

Ms. Rose Nuqui, VP and Group Head for Marketing, Events, and Exhibits at Filinvest Alabang Inc., shared how they wanted "to give back to our community -- the shopping public. We want to help enlighten women on the best ways to combat breast cancer, which is early detection. It's a community building and support project." She added how they find fulfillment in undertaking the Go Pink campaign and to be working with new partners.

James Deakin's Pink Panther
According to Muntinlupa City Health Officer Dr. Magdalena Meana, breast cancer is the number one cause of women's death in the city thus their goal to increase the quality of life for patients through the implementation of the breast cancer program in all Health Centers in Muntinlupa through the GAD office.

I found it heartwarming to know from Ms. Trina Biazon, head of the Muntinlupa GAD, that they coordinate with out-of-school youths to create BC paracord key chains, key fobs, and bag tags for the Go Pink Awareness Merchandise fundraising activity for the benefit of ICanServe Foundation. These can be bought at the Carousel Court the whole month of October. She acknowledged that even with the amount given by the government to implement their projects, they still need support from the private sectors.

purchase of paracords helps in fundraising for BC awareness activities
"We invite everyone to join our activities like October 21's Refueling the Cancer Journey and a fun run on October 30," appealed Ms. Melissa de Leon Joseph. For more details about these worthwhile activities, please keep updated by liking the Stage Zero by Project Pink Facebook page.

Ms. Lani Eusebio of ICanServe Foundation revealed how she is a living survivor of breast cancer and affirmed that the disease indeed affects a patient's family members and friends. She shared that their organization actively campaigns for early detection in barangays to teach women about proper breast self examinations. "We are all-inclusive in the fight against cancer. We should all come together because each of us need one another," she implored. "No one organization will be able to successfully fight this fight alone."

upcoming forum with various guest speakers
"Eliminating this health concern cannot be done overnight and not just by a few people," added Kris Yabes of the Asian Hospital Charities, which helps through subsidized screenings for the women of Muntinlupa. "Together, we can make a big difference in someone's life."

Everyone, not just women, is invited to take part in this worthwhile advocacy. Unity in Pink is a month-long event that features discounts, wellness activities, breast cancer awareness talks, free consultations, free zumba sessions, and other activities for women to promote health. There is also a Hope Wall where mall shoppers and diners can write messages of encouragement for BC patients and survivors.

more reasons to shop at Festival Mall this October
This October 8 at 10AM, the ICanServe Foundation, in cooperation with the Muntinlupa GAD office, will have a BC awareness talk called Ating Dibdibin. Meanwhile, great discounts for women are available at the Shopaholic Goes Pink Sale while Mossimo partners with Festival Mall for a Fashionably Pink fashion show happening on October 23 at 3PM.

Notably, this yearly campaign has deservedly been recognized at the 51st Anvil Awards held in 2015 with a Silver Award in the Exhibits and Special Events category and another Silver Award for the External Consumers, Communities, Special Interest / Advocacy Groups category.

Supergirl Season 2 Premiers on HOOQ Same Day as U.S. Telecast

I love the Supergirl TV series. My first reason, actually, is the presence of Calista Flockhart because I enjoyed watching the Ally McBeal series many years ago. Her character this time though is so far from being an eccentric lawyer and I find it refreshing to see her play something very different -- as Cat Grant, the very much put together media mogul and intimidating boss of CATCO.

Calista Flockhart plays Cat Grant, the boss of Kara Danvers/Supergirl
Second, I liked the 1984 Supergirl movie starring Helen Slater as well as the Lois and Clark series that featured Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher. So, it was a very pleasant and welcome surprise when I found out in Season 1 that Helen and Dean play Supergirl's adopted parents. That, for me, seems like a full circle thingy ;-)

former Supergirl and Superman now play the parents of the new Supergirl
As I watched more and more episodes of Season 1, I also grew to love Supergirl's lead star, Melissa Benoist. She was perfectly cast to play Kara Danvers and is quite adorable when she delivers the  quirky expressions and dialogues of the character, especially when she is with foster sister Alex,  played by  Chyler Leigh (the unforgettable Lexi in Grey's Anatomy).

Alex and Kara
I won't explain to you anymore what the backstory is or how the series began because you can watch the pilot episode of Season 1 on the HOOQ app, for FREE as well as all the very first episodes of other TV series in HOOQ's library. From there, you can see for yourself if you'll like to continue watching the series or not. Fair enough, right?

Melissa Benoist was a great choice to play Supergirl
For those who are already fans of Supergirl like myself, the good news is, Season 2 starts airing this October 10, 2016 and will also premier on HOOQ within 24 hours after the U.S. telecast! I had the pleasure of watching the sneak peek of the first episode yesterday at My Cinema Greenbelt 3 and am looking forward to the rest of the season!

Supergirl fan at the HOOQ screening
Not to give any spoilers, let me just say that there will be new characters to watch out for (including another flying one!) as well as new villains for our superhero to battle.

just by looking at this picture, can you already guess whose character
Tyler Hoechlin will be playing in Season 2? :)
Download the HOOQ app now and get to watch not only Supergirl but also other exciting series such as Arrow, the Flash, and Gotham, which have also become constantly top viewed content. This past July, all three shows were updated to their latest seasons while additional DC TV shows such as Legends of Tomorrow and Lucifer also premiered on HOOQ as subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) exclusives.

I access Supergirl on my iPad as well as
other TV series that have also got me HOOQ'd!
Personally, I love how HOOQ gives me immediate access to Supergirl and other popular TV shows wherever I am, whatever time of day. Discover the convenience, too, of having entertainment that's literally at the palm of your hands. Get HOOQ'd and sign up for a 7-day trial on www.HOOQ.tv, now!

Gloc-9, Rico Blanco, & Yael Yuzon Visit San Beda College Alabang for FILSCAP and Pioneer's Partnership for College Songwriting Talk & Competition

Move on… that's what young Filipinos nowadays would say after a relationship breaks up. That's actually good advice when you consider how liberating it could be to leave the pain and heartaches behind. Still, it's easier said and done. I know. I've been there, too, many years ago :)

Songwriters are fortunate because many of them can translate their pain into music. Take Taylor Swift as a very good example. Just think of the many "hugot" songs she has composed by now that turned into bestselling hits

music can be a positive tool to help people move on
This 2016, the Filipino Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers, Inc. (FILSCAP), the sole and official music copyright society in the Philippines, together with Pioneer, one of the top life and non-life insurance companies in the country, are proud to launch the FILSCAP Campus Caravan. This is a series of talks that aims to guide aspiring musicians at the college level in the different aspects of songwriting.

FILSCAP Campus Caravan is to be held in different campuses which include De La Salle University-Manila, San Beda College Alabang, UP Diliman, University of Santo Tomas, Ateneo De Manila University, University of Makati, and Ateneo de Davao. Each visit is set to have a songwriting workshop talk to be conducted by well-known Filipino singers-songwriters via face-to-face sessions while also introducing the collaboration's #MoveOnLang Songwriting Competition.

follow FILSCAP and Pioneer on social media
to keep updated on when and where the talks will be held

I visited San Beda College Alabang last September 30 and got to witness three popular Filipino music artists unselfishly share their stories and tips to eager students who enthusiastically asked question after question and received very enlightening answers.

Apart from imparting their wisdom, Rico Blanco (of Rivermaya), Yael Yuzon (of Spongecola), and rapper Gloc-9, entertained everyone with their witty jokes and song numbers (watch Rico and Gloc-9 sing Magdalena, here). I am sure many of the young people in the audience were inspired to pursue their love of composing and performing songs because of those three. Heck, if I had any songwriting talent, I would probably be trying my hand at coming up with a song by now!

three admirable and inspiring music artists: Rico, Yael, and Gloc-9
The #MoveOnLang Songwriting Competition's goal is to give musically-inclined college students a venue to showcase their songwriting skills based on the Filipino trait of resiliency -- bouncing back from setbacks. For those interested, simply register and submit your entries at www.moveonlang.ph.

There will be over P260,000 in cash to be given away. The grand prize will win P100,000 but all winners will receive insurance coverage from Pioneer, while a special prize will also be awarded to the Online Favorite.

for more details, visit the #MoveOnLang website
As a staunch supporter of the arts, the Pioneer Group of Insurance companies continues to find ways to reach out to Filipinos with insurance that covers what we value most (read a related blog post, here). Pioneer also finds inspiration in media such as visual arts, film, music, and theater. It also gives back by sponsoring, covering, and promoting events and concerts.

FILSCAP, on the other hand, was established in 1965 and currently has over a thousand members. It is a non-stock, non-profit association of composers, lyric-writers, and music publishers. Some of its esteemed members include Ryan Cayabyab, Jose Mari Chan, Jim Paredes, Danny Javier, Rey Valera, Noel Cabangon, Rico Blanco, Yael Yuzon, and Ebe Dancel.

DOH's BILIS Campaign Aims for a Rabies-Free Philippines by 2020

The 10th World Rabies Day fell on September 28 this year, making it a milestone in rabies prevention. Unfortunately, thousands of people around the world still die from it each day, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

with A'quiya, the Alaskan Malamute
owned by The Pinoy Dog Whisperer Lestre Zapanta
Rabies is a fatal disease transmitted to humans through animal bites or even scratches, mostly by dogs. It is vaccine preventable but, once there's an infection, death is inevitable. Scary, right? In the Philippines, rabies continues to be a public health problem that is responsible for the death of 200-300 Filipinos every year, with children at the highest risk.

Here, 1,463 deaths from rabies were recorded by the Department of Health (DOH) from 2010-2015 with 180 being noted from January 1 to September 24, 2016. Did you know? A total of 783,879 animal bites across the country were registered in 2015! This is 10% higher than in 2014 with 683,802 cases recorded.

The increase in the number of reported cases is attributed to improved surveillance and services that enabled bite cases to seek treatment at established public Animal Bite Treatment Centers (ABTCs) and/or private Animal Bite Centers (ABCs). As of March 2016, there's now a total of 486 ABTCs located all over the country, 32 of which are in Metro Manila.

Health Secretary Ubial with representatives of
partner organizations
I find that good news because when two of my sons and my husband were bitten by one of our dogs (we believed she had postpartum depression that led to her becoming aggressive) back in 2006, our only recourse was to go to the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) where anti-rabies meds and treatment were way affordable than in private hospitals.

This month, the DOH, in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture (DA), led the celebration of World Rabies Day with the theme Rabies: Educate, Vaccinate, Eliminate, emphasizing crucial actions that communities can do to prevent rabies.

Health Secretary Paulyn Jean B. Rosell-Ubial pointed out that rabies is considered a neglected disease because while it is 100% fatal, it is 100% preventable. "Effective and safe medicines have been available for decades to prevent the disease in humans and animals," she explained adding that none of these deaths should have occurred since we have the necessary interventions to prevent rabies such as:

1) promotion of responsible pet ownership - have your household pets vaccinated at designated time periods
2) early consultation when bitten by animals - immediately go to the nearest ABTCs; likewise, do not approach stray and possibly rabid animals
3) timely administration of vaccines - visit your nearest ABTC/ABC regularly until you finish the whole course of treatment

BILIS Campaign Logo
As part of the rabies elimination campaign, a total of 41 provinces/areas have already been declared rabies-free by the DOH, DA, and Bureau of Animal Industry (DA-BAI) from 2008-2016. This year's BILIS Campaign (Bilisan ang paghugas ng sugat, Linisin ng alcohol, at Sumangguni sa doctor ukol sa taming pag-gamot ng sugat) reflects the global target to eliminate all human deaths from dog-mediated rabies by 2030.

The DOH, through the National Rabies Prevention and Control Program (NRPCP), in partnership with different agencies and local government units, continue to implement strategies and activities to respond to the problem with rabies. One strategy is the provision of Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) in all DOH-recognized ABTCs/ABCs and Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) for high-risk individuals and students in high incidence zones. Meanwhile, PhilHealth, through its Animal Bite Treatment Package, defrays the cost of PEP treatment among all qualified members.

HOOQ's First Ever Ad-Free "Freemium" Model in Southeast Asia Introduces Mobile-First User Experience

I've been hooked on HOOQ since last year when I started watching some TV series I missed several episodes of, as well as movies I didn't get to catch during their runs at the cinema theater. Now, Asia's first and largest premium video-on-demand service unveils its new app with ad-free "freemium" features.

find a wide selection of TV series on HOOQ
The first of its kind hybrid model built in Asia for Asian customers, HOOQ takes on a mobile-first user experience to cater to the varied demands of users who are always on the go. Jane Cruz-Walker, HOOQ Philippines' Country Manager, acknowledges that peoples' viewing times and habits have changed. "We are so mobile now and there are lots of waiting happening. So turn downtime to what you want it to be! Whether you're waiting for your turn in the salon or doctor's clinic, you can catch up on your favorite shows," she suggested. "You are in control to turn moments into HOOQ time, any time!"

HOOQ ambassador and Miss World 2013 Megan Young estimated that 90% of the time, her job in the entertainment industry is spent waiting. So, while having her hair and makeup done, exercising on a treadmill, or being stuck traffic, Megan plays catch up on her favorite TV series like Scandal and Revenge on HOOQ.

nice to know that Megan, like the rest of us,
enjoys binge-watching her favorite TV shows
The beautiful actress further revealed how happy she was to find out that she could watch Encantadia on the app because she is a big fan of Jennylyn Mercado. Her advice to everyone? "Have fun while waiting. Download HOOQ asap and binge watch your favorite shows!"

HOOQ's new hybrid model now allows viewers to sample a premium service at no cost because every registered user can watch the pilot episodes of all TV series even after their free trial period has ended. I love this idea that you can "test run" shows first to see if you will like one (or several) enough to continue watching and pay for the subscription.

just some of the Pinoy TV series available on HOOQ
In addition, "Users who can't commit to subscribe for a year can now do so for a week or a month. You no longer have to delete the app when your subscription ends because you'll still get access to new pilot episodes ad-free!" explained Krishnan Rajagopalan, HOOQ's Chief Content Officer.

"We believe this will be a win-win strategy for both our customers and our business as it allows the customers to try the service and the content before they decide to purchase. At the same time, we have the opportunity to re-engage customers whenever we introduce our latest titles, outside of their free trial period," pointed out HOOQ CEO Peter Bithos who added that they are launching the product in the Philippines where it all began as Filipinos are watching content whenever, wherever with our mobile phones.

Megan Young with HOOQ executives
Sheila Paul, Jeff Remegio, Jane Cruz-Walker,
Peter Bithos, Krishnan Rajagupalan and Ravi Vora
Jeffrey Remigio, HOOQ Philippines' Director of Content, assured, "We continue to grow our catalog by partnering with other content providers." At the moment, HOOQ already has over 10,000 movies and TV series available on the app.

HOOQ fans can also look forward to a new app interface that boasts a mobile-first user experience that   was built from extensive customer beta testing and usability research. The goal is to derive a customer-centric experience, given that over 80% of us access HOOQ on our mobile devices.

new mobile interface
Designed with the habits of social and digital savvies in mind, HOOQ's latest release has a brand new real time content feed and personalized recommendation engine that makes it easier to discover new favorites. There's also an improved search engine, wish lists (for future viewing), and optimized content delivery for significantly faster app start and streaming start times.

In addition to being available on iOS, Android, web, Chromecast, and Android Set-top Box, HOOQ will now also be accessible on Airplay and mobile web. "For me, one of the most exciting new features is the real time content feed that highlights our most popular content and knowing what others are watching and which titles are trending!" revealed Cruz-Walker.

with fellow HOOQ users
It's easy to get HOOQ'd! Sign up on www.HOOQ.tv for a free trial and start binge watching! Subscriptions start from P149 a month and from as low as P59.00 a week. "You should not only have 30 days to decide if you want to subscribe. You should be able to take as long as you want. We're for emerging markets everywhere," described Bithos who expounded the sachet marketing concept as Filipino's propensity to buy, for example, a single cigarette rather than the whole pack. "We have reinvented the way users interact with premium content. It has been a fantastic ride [since HOOQ started] and it's only the beginning."

Five Superfoods New Moms Need to Boost Health

Carrying a baby for nine months and giving birth can take a toll on a woman’s body. Thus, new moms absolutely need to be mindful in choosing the right foods once the baby arrives. You see, eating a healthy diet packed with nutritious, high-energy foods is a positive step towards healing your body from the stress of delivery while also helping replenish any nutrients you may have lost in the previous months.

If you are breastfeeding, ensure that your little one gets all the necessary nutrients required for optimum growth and development by including a colorful variety of veggies, grains, dairy, proteins, healthy fats and vitamin-rich foods in your diet.

Here, we list down five superfoods that work wonders for both mom and baby. They also happen to be delicious and can be easily prepared as mouth-watering dishes, which makes eating them an absolute pleasure. Routinely incorporating these powerhouse ingredients into a balanced diet along with drinking plenty of water will help boost your energy levels following the birth of your newborn.

Brown Rice

A great source of fiber, healthy whole grain carbohydrates such as brown rice help keep your energy levels up, your blood sugar level in check and provide your body with the calories needed to fuel milk production. Soak and thoroughly rinse the rice grains before cooking to get rid of excess starch.  Incorporate brown rice into salads, Asian-style stir-fries, pilafs, savory congees, and more. Likewise, try roasted red bell peppers stuffed with brown rice, herbs, and ground chicken for a delicious, Vitamin C-packed snack.

Salmon

Salmon comes highly recommended due to its infinite nutritional values. A fatty fish with high levels of protein and vitamin B12, salmon is also rich in DHA, which is a type of fat that helps with the development of your baby’s nervous system. The omega-3 fatty acids contained in salmon and other fatty fish also help alleviate symptoms of postpartum depression. Ideally, you should consume two portions a week and opt for wild over farmed salmon and fresh instead of frozen.

Dark Chocolate

That’s right! High quality dark chocolate containing 70% and above of cocoa is surprisingly loaded with nutrients and is excellent for satiating any sweet cravings. A good source of fiber, it helps with digestion and contains more antioxidants than red wine. Dark chocolate also contains minerals such as iron, magnesium and selenium and can help with improving blood circulation and reduce blood pressure.

Leafy Greens

Dark, verdant veggies like spinach, kale, broccoli, and rocket are jam-packed with vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals that are important for both mother and baby. Low in calories and yet, loaded with fiber, they help with digestion and keep energy levels high without raising your blood sugar. If salads are too boring for you, have these veggies in stir fries and chunky frittatas or blend them up with some of your favorite fruit to make a filling and insanely healthy smoothie.

Eggs

Poached, scrambled, fried or baked, eggs are versatile and a great source of protein, amino acids, vitamins, calcium, and minerals. They are great at providing you with the necessary nutrients for postpartum healing. The vitamin D in egg yolks helps to strengthen bones while zinc helps to support a healthy immune system by promoting cell reproduction and tissue repair. The Healing Power of Green Earth at Terra Verde Ecofarm & Resort in Maragondon, Cavite

A few months ago, I learned from a wise organic farmer that literally getting one's hands dirty can make you happy. He said there are microbes in soil that act as antidepressants, similar to Prozac's effect on the brain.

imagine waking up to this every morning!
When I recently visited the beautiful Terra Verde Ecofarm & Resort in Cavite, I discovered that the  place was founded in 2007 because of a "medical prescription."Emerson Atanacio, one of Terra Verde's owners, was diagnosed with a thyroid condition triggered by stress from his job as a school administrator. The doctor recommended his patient to take up farming.

Emer and Eric Atanacio with Agricultural Training Institute's
Region IV-A Director Pia Cosico
With the support of his brothers, Eric and Erwin, and their families, the Atanacios acquired a piece of land in Maragondon that, amazingly, they found through an ad in Buy and Sell. According to Eric, the place used to be filled with grass, trees, and shrubberies. "Masukal (wild)," he described. "But Emer, a true visionary, said 'Look how wonderful this could be!' So we came together and discussed ideas. We got inputs from family members and that's how the farm evolved."

at Terra Verde, you can find all the vegetables mentioned
in the song, Bahay Kubo, from singkamas down to linga!
Since then, the Atanacio clan has been spending their Christmases there with their extended families. They have also made it a tradition to share their blessings to people around the neighborhood. Last year, they had 300 kids and their parents over for Christmas Day.

an unripe ponkan fruit
The original plan for Terra Verde was simply to plant, harvest, and enjoy safely-grown food for family consumption. "Eventually, we learned a lot of things we need to be concerned about like the weather and the types of plants and animals to grow. Now, we understand better their roles in ecology. For instance, our bengala fowl not only helps control insects, they are also very good farm guards because they can be very noisy."

bengala fowl (outside the fence)
and other free range poultry
Part of their farming journey, according to Eric, is learning from other farmers, too. He told us the story of meeting one who grows ampalaya (bitter gourd) that turned out to filled with chemicals. When they asked him for some, the farmer told them they'll get the vegetables from one part of the farm, where they grow the ones for eating, and not from the produce that are for selling.

organically grown chili peppers
The sad thing is, there's a market demand for blemish-free vegetables and consumers unknowingly choose those grown using harmful pesticides. "We are what we eat," Eric pointed out. "Our journey to safe food continued with new discoveries."

organic pigs
Aside from growing organic vegetables, the Atanacios also raise their own livestock using safe farming technologies. "We advocate for people to eat safe food. We're not yet in the stage of selling to the market but we sell to friends and employees." He moreover affirmed that one doesn't have to have a huge parcel of land to farm. Done right, 500 square meters is enough to grow food that can feed a family and help them earn.

lettuce plots
Eric gave us such good insights when he advised us, "When you're sick, you go to the doctor. When you are well, go to the farmers and build relationships with them." Why? Because farmers will then put a face on their consumers and probably develop a new mindset: "If I grow vegetables with chemicals, I would think twice about 'poisoning' somebody I know."

meeting the farmers
OA (organic agriculture) bloggers and ATI staff
with the owners of Terra Verde
"If we could educate consumers to demand organic food from the vendors, then the traders will tell farmers that there's a market," reasoned Eric. "Our concept of anything organic is that it's for the rich -- mahal (expensive). But, because of the value of being safe, organic agriculture should be for the benefit of everyone."

a beautiful reminder that nature should be taken cared of
The Atanacios are thankful that the Department of Agriculture is pushing for Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) in farms as this ensures food safety. "For example, using manure as fertilizer is good. But unprocessed ones may have e-coli. So GAP addresses that."

papaya trees, if properly cared for, can last up to 1 1/2 years
and bear 50kg of fruit per tree in its lifetime
"We are happy that more young people are now going into farming. But we need to educate more of them," added Eric. "If we can package agriculture as a tourism destination, then we can tap the traveling market." This, Terra Verde has already done as it was recently accredited as an agri-tourism farm/site by the Department of Tourism. They help Educate (converse with guests about their advocacies), Entertain (they have a track for racing RC cars, expansive air space for flying RC planes, and a stream for sailing RC boats), and EcoFarm (inspire people to be part of the agricultural ecology).

a great reminder on one wall of the mess hall
Visitors (by invitation or by appointment) can tour the farm -- along with taking a lot of selfies in numerous Instagrammable areas -- and even spend the night in a tent or one of the kubins (a cluster of bahay kubo that evolved into cabins). My husband and I slept in one and had such a good night's rest thanks to the quiet environment and cool weather. Too bad, though, that it rained that evening so we didn't get to experience lighting a bonfire in the middle of lounging chairs arranged in a circle on the expansive lawn.

honeymooners or retirees? LOL
I hope many of our farmers get to meet the Atanacios because the brothers have a lot of practical lessons to share that, I am positive, would help the struggling ones to finally learn how to evolve with the times while earning more than what they have been getting for years. Eric emphasized, "If we don't study the food chain, the farmers suffer as well as the consumers."

mornings at Terra Verde be like ...
"Responsible farming is our commitment for a healthy nation," he affirmed. "At the end of the day, it is our survival as a people that is at stake."

Beyond Fashion: Using Art to Make Dreams Soar

One of the sad realities for parents like us who have kids with special needs is the big challenge of communication. Because many of these children are unable to talk, it can oftentimes be difficult to decipher what they want to say. I admit to feeling despair whenever my son, who has cerebral palsy, would cry nonstop and I begin to run out of ideas how to make him smile again.

Kang Rui and his mom, Jia Jing
The same is true for parents of children who have other forms of disabilities. Few people understand that acting up or throwing tantrums is one way for special children to vent out their frustrations about not being able to communicate their thoughts and feelings well.

art as a form of communication

This is why I always feel a twinge in my heart when I see children and adults with special needs who have found avenues to express themselves. Some great examples are the stories of Temple Grandin, an American university professor with autism; Clarissa Tiongson Ortiz, a talented Filipino artist with down syndrome; and many others like them who found ways to shine despite their many obstacles.

art as an expression
Yesterday, I saw a video about Linking Art and Autism in China. This is the inspiring story of Kang Rui and of other young people who belong to Golden Wings Art, a rehabilitation center for children with autism. There, kids with special needs can express themselves through art while also building connections with others.

discovering unique talents
Since Kang Rui started going to the center, he has been able to develop new skills and abilities. I deeply felt his mom's joy and pride while talking about the positive changes in her son. Like him, Jia Jing serves as an inspiration to fellow parents, whether they have special kids or not, to help generate awareness about the special needs community. After all, these children could use a little bit more compassion from the rest of the "normal" population.

art in fashion
It is thus even more heartwarming to know about organizations, like fashion clothing manufacturer Paclantic, and their impact on the this advocacy. During the Beijing Fashion Week held last month, they made it possible for Kang Rui and his peers to show off their beautiful artworks incorporated into a new range of fashion accessories.

heartwarming
The video was produced by BON Cloud as part of its Chinese Corporate Social Responsibility Stories. This organization works closely with businesses and institutions across China to produce short videos on corporate citizenship and businesses that have a social conscience.

It is my hope that more companies in the Philippines, like our very own Lamoiyan Corporation, would also consider doing CSR projects that would benefit people with special needs. Wouldn't you agree? At the end of the day, we all have the same hearts that seek to understand, and be understood by, those around us.

Forest Wood Garden in San Pablo City, Laguna: Championing Life, Not Just Livelihood

In the province of Laguna, Forest Wood Garden in San Pablo City is known as the best landscaper, having already won many awards in the industry. Years back when they started, Joel and Myrna Frago didn't expect that their passion for collecting plants would eventually turn into a business.

beautiful landscaping at Forest Wood Garden
Joel, a Nursing graduate, and Myrna, who has a background in architecture, registered Forest Wood Garden with the Department of Trade and Industry in 2004 and opened it to the public five years later. In 2013, the place became an Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) learning site for farmers and stakeholders who are interested to learn about organic inputs, sustainable farming, and the farm to table concept.

Joel and Myrna showing us one of their magazine features
According to the husband and wife tandem, they have spent the past 10 years doing natural farming and applying practical agriculture practices. Both believe farmers play a big role in food production and security and that students taking up agriculture can also do much for nation building. "We are a living proof that there's money in farming," they said.

the famous pansit kalabuko
With the desire to be a channel of blessings to fellow San Pablo residents, the Fragos encourage students to become agri-preneurs in addition to helping the city draw tourists who want to discover the delicious food found there. One of the bestselling dishes uniquely available at Forest Wood is their Pansit Kalabuko made with strips of kalabasa (squash), buko (coconut), mushroom, and other healthy ingredients. Not surprisingly, this particular food item has already been featured numerous times in various TV shows and magazines thus the flow of visitors from near and far interested to sample it.

trivia: plantsado came from plantsa, the Filipino word for clothes iron
Another must-try is the plantsado, a snack made from root crop wrapped in banana leaves then literally flattened using old-fashioned irons heated with charcoals. We likewise loved their ube, served as bite-sized balls, that seem to melt in the mouth.

a farm staff watering crops using rainwater
inside a biodegradable greenhouse
After eating, we toured the place and saw for ourselves how Forest Wood Garden further advocates for green living. They store rainwater and use it to water the plants, and build greenhouses made of the biodegradable bamboo instead of hollow blocks. "We also propagate and utilize crops that are not so well-known," shared Joel.

organic coconut hut in the middle of a bamboo forest
He then led us to their bamboo forest where various bamboo species can be found. Joel said bamboo is rich in nitrogen, which is needed to keep the soil healthy and also helps in countering the ill effects of climate change. In one area, we found an organic hut made of palapa (the hard bottom part of coconut leaves) with two shy girls peeking from the window.

don't be deceived, this adorable-looking wild boar
has already fathered many piglets!
Walking further onto the expansive land, we had a very interesting encounter with a wild boar named Judge who, amazingly, replies to Joel's voice with enthusiastic grunts! This cute pig even laid down on the ground when some of us approached, seeming to invite some belly rubs, which he got from Karl. Later, Judge trotted in front of Joel like a pet dog leading his owner who's holding a leash. Myrna told me that the two usually get a lot attention when they do that around Sampalok Lake. Amazing!

at Forest Wood, pig pens can be transferred anywhere
because the pigs help fertilize the land one area at a time
to get the soil ready for planting
During the tour, we further learned other things the Fragos do to practice natural resource management. This refers to how natural resources like soil, water, plants, and animals are used in relation to improving the quality of life for the present and future generations. Farmers like them acknowledge that people and their livelihoods are dependent on the natural resources around them and that it is their job as stewards of the land to maintain its health and productivity.

the Fragos believe that when you take good care of the land,
it will also take care of you
If you want to feel inspired about your role in protecting the environment, as well as have a taste of delicious naturally-grown food, pay Forest Wood Garden a visit, soon. Like its owners, you just might feel more strongly about living a productive life instead of simply pursuing a livelihood.

5 Reasons to Make a Beeline for Great Deals in Revitalized Tutuban Center

I haven't been to the Divisoria area for years so when I had the chance to visit the place last week, I excitedly looked forward to the trip, knowing quite well there will be shopping involved. After all, the area is known for its really affordable merchandise items.

the revitalized Tutuban Center
That morning, my husband and I went straight to Tutuban Center, the bargain hunter's paradise. It recently underwent a number of renovation work and building improvements just in time for the coming Christmas season and the changes are really good!

Here are five reasons why you should go there to do your Halloween and Christmas shopping:

1) Re-live history at the Tutuban Center Main Station, a heritage building with the Bonifacio Shrine across its entrance. This is where the original Tutuban train station built in the 1800s first stood. I love that steps were taken to preserve its history, which included repainting based on the heritage color palette as well as improving lighting for its facade's details. The building has also retained features like brick walls and century-old wrought iron pillars that lead all the way to the food court.

in front of the heritage building

2) Enjoy a wide variety of snacks and refreshments at the food court. It features some of Divisoria and Binondo's best food brands like El Presidente, Kikiam in Ilaya, King's Bakeshop, and Eng Ho. There, hubby and I enjoyed flavorful dimsum, some churros, takoyaki, and even bought various kinds of yummy bread for pasalubong. Shoppers who need to take a break from all the walking would appreciate the spacious area dotted with numerous picnic tables.

a variety of dimsum from El Presidente
3) Shop in comfort. Both the Main and Prime Block buildings have air conditioning and spacious aisles so there's more room to get moving. Too, the security personnel present are good deterrents against bad elements that usually roam around stalls located on crowded sidewalks. Outside are enhanced pedestrian and vehicular circulation plus an additional 150 parking slots built into the Center's CM Recto Avenue paid parking area.

walk along spacious aisles and in an air conditioned environment
4) Go crazy over pure bargain buying pleasure. While the Main Station holds the mall's retail shops, restaurants, and service stores, the connecting Prime Block offers Tutuban Center's revitalized shopping experience featuring three floors filled with a shopper's dream of having wide choices.

According to Norie U. Raniel, Tutuban Center Deputy General Manager/Operations Head, the cluster of stalls in level 3 of the Prime Block focuses on improved merchandise zoning "so that shoppers will find everything they want and need in each area."

cool Halloween decorations
The Prime Block Clusters is anchored by Anding's Toys and Flowers, Inc., which actually offers so much more than its name because it carries everything from party favors to garden accessories, and holiday decor. Having been in business for over 20 years, Anding's counts large malls and merchants among its clients due to its wide variety of merchandise such that the store takes up about 317 sqm. or around 18 stalls.

I was able to buy a number of toys and decors at Anding's and was really surprised at how low some of the prices are. If you have a lot of godchildren, this is the place you should go to for your Christmas regalo shopping! And in case your kids still don't have costumes for Halloween, this is also a great place to go to.

inside one of the stores selling general merchandise
5) Find something for everyone in the family as well as friends and colleagues. Stores in the Prime Block sell practically everything from clothes for every occasion, the latest RTWs, costumes, and sleepwears to footwear, bags, fragrances, personal care products, and fashion accessories. Love DIY fashion projects? There's a huge store called Michelle's Ribbon and Lace Center where you can find affordable fabrics, patches, beads, and other trimmings!

Likewise, there are general merchandise stores offering an array of home, office, and personal items. I was able to score a few great deals on stuff that I plan to give as gifts for Christmas as well as some home and office supplies.

a vintage choo-choo displayed in front of the PNR Tutuban Station
Since the Center is walking distance to the Tutuban PNR Station, I asked hubby if we can ride it all the way to Alabang so I can finally experience it for the first time. The fare costs P25.00 per person and travel time took around 1 hour and 15 minutes with 15 stops until we reached our destination.

How's the experience? Well, let's just say it was definitely an unforgettable one that I won't be repeating any time soon :p However, I'll definitely be coming back to Tutuban Center to do more shopping one of these days but via car, bus, or jeep again next time! :)

Are You a Candidate for Cancer Genetic Testing Like Angelina Jolie?

Angelina Jolie lost her mom, grandma, and aunt to cancer. Three years ago, the famous actress and director chose to undergo a double mastectomy after testing positive for the BRCA1 gene. She confirmed her estimated 87% risk of developing breast cancer and a 50% risk for ovarian cancer.

Angelina Jolie's empowering story of taking control
of her health inspired The Angelina Effect
and landed her on the cover of TIME magazine
"Cancer is still a word that strikes fear into people’s hearts, producing a deep sense of powerlessness," wrote Jolie in her 2013 New York Times article. "But today it is possible to find out through a blood test whether you are highly susceptible to breast and ovarian cancer, and then take action."

The good news is, genetic testing is now available in our country through Asia Genomics Philippines. Last week, I attended a talk by Dr. Marcelo Imasa, medical oncologist at St. Lukes Medical Center, held in Apotheca Integrative Pharmacy in Makati.

Dr. Imasa revealed that global incidence of breast cancer has risen by 256% in the past 30 years with South East Asia increasing by 479%. Unfortunately, the Philippines has the highest incidence rate of the disease in the region. Did you know that 1 out of 13 Filipino women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime?

Dr. Marcelo Imasa emphasized the need to see a genetic counselor first
before undergoing genetic testing
Although majority (70-80%) of breast cancer cases develop in older people with little or no family history of the condition and no genetic risk, there is still that 5-10% of breast cancer that is hereditary. These individuals carry inherited mutations (damaged genes that control how cancer cells grow) that are born with them and do not simply develop over time.

On the other hand, 15-20% of breast cancer are "familial" or occur in many families with a history of breast and/or ovarian cancer that do not have an identifiable genetic cause. Dr. Imasa explained that these cases may be due to genes that have not yet been identified and/or shared factors such as environment or lifestyle.

the deal with hereditary cancer
So when should you suspect that you may have an inherited cancer syndrome?

  • having a family member(s) whose cancer was diagnosed at an unusually young age
  • different types of cancer have occurred independently in the same person
  • cancer in both organs in a set of paired organs (e.g. both kidneys or both breasts)
  • several close blood relatives with the same time of cancer across multiple generations (e.g. a mother, daughter, and sisters with breast cancer)
  • unusual cases of a specific cancer type (e.g. breast cancer in a man)
  • presence of birth defects, like certain non-cancecerous or benign skin growths or skeletal abnormalities known to be associated with inherited cancer syndromes
  • being a member of a racial/ethnic group known to have an increased chance of having a certain hereditary cancer syndrome and having one or more of the above features as well

According to Dr. Imasa, genetic testing looks for specific inherited changes in a person's chromosomes or genes. The benefit of getting tested is that results may modify cancer surveillance options such as age of initial screening and treatment guidance as well as identification of family members who may be at risk.

Asia Genomics' cancer testing kits
One very important thing to note, though, is to see a genetic counsellor first before having a genetic test done. In case you get a positive result, he/she could help you deal with its harmful effects on emotions, social relationships, finances, and medical choices. Given devastating and life-changing news, patients could develop anxiety, depression, and anger as well as have difficulty making choices (e.g. to have surgery or not). This may also create tension in the family.

Of course, with every procedure, Dr. Imasa clarified that genetic testing has its limitations. "For instance, just because you have the gene doesn't mean you will develop the disease. Also, it cannot predict if and when the cancer will develop in high risk individuals," he described.

our group of interested learners with Dr. Imasa
(*gasp* I unknowingly blocked him! sorry, Doc!)
Bridging the technology of the West to Filipinos, Asia Genomics results for genetic testing take around 7 to 14 days before they are released. The test for BRCA 1/2 costs P28k compared to P200k in previous years while a 49 genes full test (to check for cancers of the colon, kidney, pancreas, etc.), costs around P100k.

In case your doctor recommends you to undergo genetic testing and you find out you are at high risk for getting cancer, Dr. Imasa advises that it is best to make lifestyle changes as soon as possible and to see your doctor regularly.

One of the concerns of parents with young kids is the content available on local TV. Sometimes, there just aren't good enough shows that are appropriate to be viewed by very young audiences. The thing is, children who can't wait for their favorite shows' time slots may resort to just watching whatever is on the tube at the moment, which may not be very kid-friendly.

Tita Ruth and Sam
Last week, HOOQ Philippines showcased its massive collection of family-friendly titles and animated series at the third HOOQ Hangouts, a pre-Halloween treat of the biggest outdoor cinema event series held at the Globe Iconic Store in Bonifacio Global City.

kids in costume who joined the trick or treat games
Like the previous events, HOOQ Hangouts, in cooperation with Samsung and Globe Live, turned the BGC Amphitheater into a free outdoor cinema venue with massive LED screens, beanbags, and cushioned benches so guests can fully enjoy the show. This #SpHOOQtacular event featured games and prizes for little ones who came in costumes before the screening of Monster House, an Academy Award nominee for Best Animated Feature horror-comedy produced by Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis

3rd HOOQ Hangouts with its very cool setup
Asia's pioneering video on demand service is set to quadruple its library of child-friendly content this last quarter of 2016 as it inked a new set of partnerships with the biggest names in family entertainment: Nickelodeon, Kids Like Us, Hasbro, Mattel, DHX, and MoMedia to bring some of the most popular kids titles into HOOQ's catalog.

kids and adults who enjoyed watching Monster House
Jane Cruz-Walker, HOOQ Philippines Country Manager, affirmed that they are committed to delivering premium content for everyone in the Filipino family, and this includes entertainment for kids. "This is why we are expanding our library to have over 400 hours of kids' content over the next few weeks."

Happy Halloween from HOOQ!
Soon, little ones can watch Dora the Explorer, Go Diego Go, Paw Patrol, Littlest Pet Shop, and Mr. Bean on mom or dad's mobile devices or tablets. If you kids are fans of Hi-5 and iCarly, they will also be able to re-watch their favorite episodes of these series.

a #SpHOOQtacular event
Animated series fans would also be glad to know that HOOQ will deliver multiple seasons of Avatar, The Legend of Aang, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Fairly Odd Parents, Transformers, Spongebob Squarepants, and My Little Pony.

see you on the next HOOQ Hangouts!
"We are well aware that home viewing among young families is largely driven by children, and this addition of this huge chunk of family friendly content truly makes HOOQ a video service that caters to everyone whether they are looking for Hollywood, local content for themselves, or something fun that the kids can watch," added Cruz-Walker. "Now, every member of the family can enjoy their own favorites across multiple devices anytime."

Ato Belen's Farm: Ensuring the Survival of the Next Generation

$

San Pablo City, Laguna is a beautiful place where you can find many wonderful destinations. It is home to the famous seven lakes as well as farms that practice organic agriculture. Apart from Forest Wood Garden, which I wrote about recently, there's Ato Belen's Farm that's also located in the area.

Ato Belen's greenhouses where they grow various vegetables
Initially launched as a plant nursery and family farm in August 1987, Ato Belen's has since become a fully-integrated and diversified farming operation. Its advocacy is to promote family farming to ensure the survival of the next generation. It is still ran and managed by the Belen family where both parents and their five sons are all involved in decision-making when it comes to farm management.

with Brian and Sir Ato -- my OA Blogger Ako jacket blended in! :D
Brian Belen, one of Sir Ato's sons, is an Agri Business graduate from U.P. Los Baños who left the corporate world to help out with the family business in 2010. He shared with us their journey of selling seedlings and establishing an orchard 29 years ago; procuring and growing livestock (hogs, cows, goats, and ducks for making salted eggs) in 1989; and being devastated by Typhoon Milenyo in 2007, which uprooted majority of their rambutan trees.

fresh rambutan and salad made with organic veggies
Since one big area got cleared of trees, the family decided to make it a vegetable plantation and shifted to organic agriculture by feeding the soil with nutrients from the plants. "We formulated our own inputs like compost and liquid supplements," related Brian. "In agriculture, you don't only produce vegetables. You can also create inputs from them. And we found gold!"

some of Ato Belen's farm inputs
Presently, 50% of the farm's income is derived from the sales of farm inputs such as their bestselling Lactobac (which sanitizes animal units and removes the smell of ammonia), fish emulsion concentrate, compost/vermicast, and more. Brian affirmed that this part of the business is actually low risk, is not vulnerable to typhoons, and has lower management requirement.

He also shared with us one of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) advocacies -- a tea-making project for mothers in a resettlement site in Calauan, Laguna. Named Tsaa Laya (tsaa means tea while laya means freedom) the products were born out of a social enterprise that promotes health, ecology, and fair practices.

successful container gardening
As we toured around the farm's 1.29 hectare main site/headquarters (they have a second site measuring 8.95 hectares), my companions and I were amazed at the numerous trees planted in different containers that were already bearing fruit at such short heights! I didn't expect to see citrus and tamarinds growing on trees that are only as tall as I am!

(from left) fruit bearing tamarind tree, sugarcane, and pepper vine
We also saw photos of vegetables and other fruit-bearing trees (that are currently not in season) with amazingly abundant produce. These advances in agriculture are a result of clever agricultural techniques such as asexual propagation where seedlings are matched with the top of an already fruit-bearing plant. When grafted, the tree can already produce fruit within five to six years versus the 15 to 20 years of waiting time if you simply planted a seed. Of course, the processed inputs from natural ingredients help in further enhancing growth.

the photos on the wall showed proof of the abundant produce at this farm
As to labor, four of the Belen family work at the farm on a full-time basis plus a total of 17 staff members (considered as 17 families) who are paid based on prevailing wage laws. "Our mission is to promote family-based and sustainable agribusiness enterprises as a vital tool for economic empowerment," illustrated Brian.

organic lettuce in one of the greenhouses
Ato Belen's also accommodate field trips where little kids are taught to do some planting so they would have a renewed appreciation for food. Before leaving, they are given planting kits that their parents could help them with at home and serve as a good bonding project. The farm has also welcomed foreign visitors like agri-technicians from Afghanistan and students from the Tokyo University of Agriculture

healthy seedlings for sale
The farm adheres to three dimensions of sustainable agriculture: environmental, economic, and social development. Thus, their vision is for a Philippines where no Filipino will ever go hungry again. But, as Brian said, we need to help uplift the lives of the farmers because they play a big role in all our lives. They are the ones, after all, who grow our food!

used my finger to show just how big this pomelo is -- larger than my head!

Breast Cancer Awareness Month may have come and gone but the disease will continue to claim lives if women are not pro-active about taking steps for early detection. Breast cancer is something EVERY woman should be concerned about because it is the number one type of cancer in the Philippines. According to the 2010 Philippine Cancer Facts and Estimates, the incidence rate has steadily risen since 1980 and affects women as early as 30 years old.

Did you know? Even men can have breast cancer! And the only way to fight this sickness is early detection through self-check, monitoring, and having regular check-ups that include a mammogram.

Some signs that you may be at risk for breast cancer: 40 years old and up, with family history, had early menstruation, late menopause, smoking, alcohol, no children or no children before 35, and more. Health Cube's 3D Tomo Mammo machine
Available at Health Cube is the latest in breast screening with its 3D Tomosynthesis Mammogram. This test produces a three-dimensional view of the breast that helps identify and characterize individual structures without confusion of overlapping tissue. This new technology enables the doctor to see thin mammography sections of the entire breast and gives a clearer image thus, decreasing the need for further examinations.

A 3D mammography test is better at detecting changes earlier than regular 2D scans. It can help distinguish superimposed tissue from real abnormalities, leading to less anxiety for women whenever they are due for a breast exam.

How to Start Investing with a P5,000 Sun Life Prosperity Card

Many people think that investing is a complicated matter and should only be done with the help of a financial expert who requires considerable payment for the service. I used to think that way, too, until I discovered that this is just one part of handling personal finances and growing one’s money.

I still see myself a newbie at investing though because I know that I still have so much to learn. That was why I signed up for Sun Life’s #Money4LifeChallenge, a series of monthly talks by Aya Laraya, a Registered Financial Planner. The goal was to empower bloggers who are interested to improve our knowledge on money matters.

A few weeks ago, my blog post on 5 Things to Consider When Finding a Financial Advisor won me a Sun Life Prosperity Card worth P5,000. I’ve been wanting to invest in mutual funds for a couple of years now but hadn’t gotten round to exploring my options. The card made the decision for me and I am grateful :)

I activated the card by going to the Sun Life Building in Bonifacio Global City. There, I got help from John Natividad of the Sun Life Asset Management Company Inc. (SLAMCI) who assisted me in filling up the Investor Information Form, Investor Profile Questionnaire, and other relevant papers.

John also patiently explained how easy it is to add to the initial investment through automatic bank transfers of P1,000 (minimum) each month. These subsequent additions will further help grow the investment as the years go by.

By now, you’re probably wondering how the money would grow. Sun Life pools all the funds from individual investors and places these in investment vehicles that, so far, have been doing well for the past years. What I love about the Sun Life Prosperity Card is that it takes off much of the guesswork and headache because there are experienced fund managers who would handle your money for you.

I would leave the more extensive explanations to a Sun Life Mutual Fund Advisor whom you can ask advice from as to what kind of mutual fund you should choose to invest in. Ask to speak to one when you visit any Sun Life Financial Philippines branch where you can purchase Prosperity Cards. They are very accommodating.

Since Christmas is just around the corner, I highly recommend this as a great gift option because it is something unique that will appreciate over time. The Sun Life Prosperity Card allow recipients to have their own starter investment fund and help begin their personal finance journey towards a brighter future. Consider this: P5,000 will not earn much if you leave it for a long time inside a bank savings account.
