Calligaris: Making it Possible to Bring Home Something Smart, Beautiful, and Italian

Calligaris, a leader in Italian home furnishings, recently opened a brand new showroom in Bonifacio Global City. This brand, based out of Manzano, Italy, was founded in 1923 by Mr. Antonio Calligaris and is now sold in 90 countries. It has over 7,000 products that would look great in various parts of one's home.

Aside from Calligaris' vibrant red theme color, I am fascinated by its woodpecker logo, which I found out symbolizes the tireless worker with a passion for wood. This, I believe, is a fitting tribute to Calligaris' beginnings because Antonio's first product was the iconic Marocca chair, distinctive for its sturdy wooden frame, hand-woven rush seat, and slightly curved legs.

Now, Calligaris designs use combinations of materials, experimentation, and continuous innovation. The brand has ongoing collaborations with leading designers and up-and-coming talents. Together with their R&D team, they develop solutions to answer the differing needs of their increasingly global market.

Mr. Alessandro Calligaris, company chairman and member of the family's third generation, was present to grace the BGC showroom opening. By his side was Ms. Florence Ko, Managing Director of Gruppo Mobili Philippines, Inc., the distributor and brand partner of Calligaris in the country. Gruppo is also the parent company of luxury home store Furnitalia, custom closet and kitchen crafters Space 2000, and lighting specialist store Lucern.

"We're very excited with the launch of Calligaris' new home and showroom at BGC," shared Ms. Ko. "Calligaris is a global Italian brand known for its stylish modern aesthetic, quality craftsmanship, and smart design. [It] is perfect for young, upwardly mobile professionals looking to furnish their condos or houses with designer furniture at reasonable price points."

The range of products include chairs, tables, beds, sofas, storage units, and decorative accessories. Among the many innovative Calligaris furnishings are the Gamera chair, made from one-piece polyamid shell suitable for indoor or outdoor use; the Lam table, a harmonious amalgam of metal and wood available in fixed-length or extending versions; and the modular Urban sofa, which offers multiple configurations to fit unique needs.

Then there is also Calligaris CODE, a capsule collection featuring extraordinary and surprising furniture designed by young avant-garde artists from Italy. The brand maintains its Italian heritage at its core, making each individual piece into a beautiful work of art that will look great in specific corners of the house.

Come visit the Calligaris showroom located at the Mezzanine floor of Clipp Center, 11th Avenue corner 39th Street in BGC, Taguig. For inquiries, please call (02) 869.1059 to 61 or email info.calligaris@furnitalia.com.ph.

Learn Philippine History Through Wonderful Works of Art at SiningSaysay in Gateway Tower Mall, Cubao

It is not that easy to share the history of any country in just a few words. There are so many momentous events that should be told and discussed first to help one better understand and appreciate a nation. This is very true of the Philippines. We have such a colorful history but it takes months of history lessons and classes before young Filipinos could totally understand what our country has been through in the past centuries.

Atty. Gari M. Tiongco, former UPAA president
Now, there's a great way for parents and teachers to teach and let children experience history through 30 beautiful paintings in an art exhibit that chronicles our nation's life and times. SiningSaysay: Philippine History in Art covers moments from pre-historic Philippines to modern times.

"Breaking Colonial Ties I" by Romeo Manquil
There, you'll be able to see for yourself how petroglyphs discovered in Angono, Rizal look like, or what went on during the Spanish occupation and rule. Appreciate artists' renderings of the Cry of Pugad Lawin; the declaration of independence in Kawit, Cavite; great women in history such as Gabriela Silang and Melchora Aquino; the establishment of the Commonwealth Government; the rise of the labor unions all the way to recent years when Filipinos continued to fight for justice and democracy.

"Women Empowerment in the Philippines" by Grace "Gigi" J. Alfonso
SiningSaysay is a joint project of the University of the Philippines (UP), the UP Alumni Association (UPAA), and the Araneta Center. The team called on the talents of 28 UP alumni artists to bring their visions of history to life on 6ft. by 12 ft. canvasses. To ensure the accuracy of elements, the artists consulted renowned historians Dr. Serafin Qiazon and Prof. Ma. Luisa Camagay. They also researched historic materials online, in old newspapers, and even old movies and vintage airplane models to help them recreate details.

Armand B. Bacaltos beside his work "The West Discovers the Philippines I"
I took a close shot of his painting because I was very much fascinated
at how he rendered the Queen of Spain as part of the clouds
while looming over Magellan and Lapu-Lapu
The project, which was first envisioned by the UPAA under Atty. Gari M. Tiongco, took four years to complete before it was finally mounted. He shared that the concept aims to be a come-on for students to learn the history of the Philippines in just half a day by going around, but not like what one usually does in a museum. "Here, it is given to you in the form of art. Not every country has this, but here, a tourist can come to the Philippines and learn our history by going over these artworks."

"Pre-Hispanic Philippines" by Randy T. Solon
I was very impressed with everything I saw when I went around the gallery. There are so many tiny details in many of the paintings that truly added meaning to what the artists were trying to convey. I love the bursts of colors everywhere you look and the very spacious and well-lit area that makes it a very conducive place of learning.

A portion of "Breaking Colonial Ties II" by Aileen Grace Lanuza - De Pio
I loved how she included notes to our National Anthem
and included a nice quote from Emilio Aguinaldo under it
Here's the list of the 29 participating artists who form a veritable who's who of the Philippine art world: Adonai Artificio, Armand Bacaltos, Adi Baen-Santos, Grandier Bella, Benjie Cabangis, Ben Cabrera, Angel Cacnio, Romeo Carlos, Cris Cruz, Denes Dasco, Gig De Pio, Simkin De Pio, Vincent De Pio, Neil Doloricon, Norman Dreo, Amado Hidalgo, Abdul Asia, Mari Imao, Ben Infante, Gigi-Javier-Alfonso, Aileen Lanuza, Romeo Mananquil, Norlie Meimban, Julius Samson, Jonahmar Salvosa, Randy Solon, Michael Velasco, Jun Yee, and Janice Young. Truthfully, knowing this makes me happy and proud that I am also a UP alumna! :)

Jonahmar A. Salvosa beside his painting "Galleon Trade"
Alfredo E. Pascual, UP President, affirmed that "SiningSaysay is an innovative way of teaching history, promoting art appreciation, understanding Filipino identity, and imbibing cultural pride; all constituting valuable aspects of teaching and public service, which the University of the Philippines is mandated to do."

"Prehistoric Philippines II" by Benjamin I. Cabangis
The exhibit can be found at the Gateway Gallery located on the 5th Level of the Gateway Tower Mall. It is the country's largest private gallery that serves as a fitting venue to such an illustrious art project. "With SiningSaysay, Araneta Center is affirmed as the arts and culture hub of Quezon City," said Jorge L. Araneta, Chairman and CEO of the Araneta Group. "We are housing a collection of great artistic and historic value. This is not just an educational opportunity, but a source of national pride."

"Muslim in the Philippines" by National Artist Abdul Mari Asia Imao
SiningSaysay: Philippine History in Art is open every day from 11AM to 7PM. Entrance is free to the public so please bring your children there! I'm visiting again, soon, and tagging my sons along.

"Filipino Responses to Spanish Colonization" by Vincent Paolo S. De Pio
FYI, I didn't include here all the photos I took because: 1) the photos don't really give due justice to, and were not able to fully capture the vibrant colors of, the paintings, and 2) I really want you, dear readers, to go there and see the whole collection for yourself so you can also feel that awe and pride of our country and its talented people. I guarantee, it will be a worthwhile experience.

Summer is here! Just feel that heat and bright sunlight outside! By now, many of you have probably started planning where to go and what to do to maximize some of the most laid-back months of the year. However, in the middle of the rush to choose destinations and pack your stuff, make sure you don't expose your skin to the harsh summer sun or else, you might just miss out on all the fun!

Here's one good news -- Vaseline, the world's pioneer in skin care, has consistently been coming up with products to help women make the most out of life. Remember this brand's iconic innovations? There's the famous petroleum jelly and the moisturizing lip therapy as well as the most recently launched breakthrough: the Instant Fair Lotion

Now that it's summer again, Vaseline presents a new innovation that answers the season's skin care concerns. Seize the summer with the NEW Vaseline Water-Based Whitening Serum that provides three modes of fairness and comes in a non-sticky formula that is easily absorbed by the skin.

Vaseline Water-Based Whitening Serum has SPF30 that provides up to 96% protection from UVB rays of the sun that cause skin damage and sunburn, making it Vaseline's best-ever sun protection. It also has PA++ that protects against UVA rays of the sun that cause aging and darkening. Lastly, it contains Vitamin B3 that whitens skin with continued use.

I tried the serum during its launch at Stella in Bonifacio High Street the other day and found it to smell really good! I like how the liquid was easily absorbed by my skin and didn't leave a sticky feeling. Needless to say, I had no hesitations later of walking under the sun without an umbrella.

Thank you Earth Rullan for the paparazzi shots! :)
I am quite happy to discover this product this early because one of my concerns this summer is getting sunburnt when I do my sunset practice runs in the late afternoons. Unlike in previous months, the sun has now become hot and harsh even at 4PM. So I'll be sure to apply some Vaseline Water-Based Whitening Serum every time we go running in the coming days.

You, too, can #SeizeTheSummer with this product for more protected and fairer skin, even under the sun. It is now available in stores nationwide at these prices: P99.00 for 70ml and P249.00 for 180ml.

Ready to run and seize the summer!
Oh, and if you want to win a trip to Bali, Indonesia, check out @VaselinePH on Twitter and Instagram and search for the hashtag #SeizeTheSummer to know more!

Earning my First Finisher's Medal at the 7-Eleven 1500 Run

When it comes to running, I can definitely say I'm not the competitive type. I just try to enjoy the health benefits this sport has been giving me. Since I started running again last year, I found myself less prone to being out of breath even during simple activities such as sprinting to catch the MRT or climbing a long flight of stairs.

Every time my hubby brings home another medal or finisher's shirt from joining 21k or 42k races, or when I see friends' posts on Facebook about their running achievements, I feel happy for them because I know they've really set goals to run faster distances.

Me? I'm simply content being able to finish 5k in the races I've recently joined. It was so nice though to find out that every runner who'd join the 7-Eleven 1500 Run would get a finisher's medal. Yesterday, my husband ran 42k (barefoot) again while I signed up to finish another 5k.

I found it amazing to be in Filinvest City at 4AM and finding it teeming with thousands of people. Due to the huge number of participants, our 5k wave got to start at 6AM. Like before, I started slow and steady to make sure that I keep running at least until I reach the first kilometer mark. After that, I alternately walked and run as my feet ate up the distances.

According to my phone, I finished 5k in 45:23. That's under one hour and is good enough for me! (Edit: found my official time, which is lower, and posting it here. Yey!)

Hubby and our youngest son were already waiting for me when I crossed the finish line. I claimed my finisher's medal at the booth and happily posed for a photo. Hey, it's not every race where organizers give away these rewards for runners who finish below 21k!

So thanks 7-Eleven for that feel-good gesture!

Welcome Summer with Selecta Ice Cream's 3 New Flavors!

The weather has become hotter the past couple of weeks. No doubt, the start of the summer season is already here and I'm sure it's bound to get even warmer by May. I'm not worried though because there are a lot of ways to cool down and beat the heat!

One of the easiest? Enjoy a cup or bowl of Selecta Ice Cream! The good news is, our favorite ice cream brand has come up with three new flavors that are perfect to welcome summer with.

If you're fond of that local milky and chewy candy that's sprinkled with sugar, you'll love Selecta's Ube Pastillas flavor. Aside from the creamylicious ube ice cream, there are bits and pieces of real pastillas you'll get to chew and savor while they melt inside your mouth.

Then again, as many of my friends say, chocolate will always be on top of their favorite sweet treats list. So for you, chocolate lovers, Selecta has created the Choco Toffee Crunch variant that will give you the rich flavor of real cocoa while you bite into crunchy chunks of chocolate-covered toffee. That's chocolate heaven for you!

Now here's the funny part. We had all three flavors of Selecta Ice Cream inside the freezer the last time I checked. Fruit lover that I am, I saved the best for last and thought I'd try the Mango Graham Cake for my final food-tripping. Guess what? The next time I opened the freezer, the tub was already gone! It turned out that this flavor became my husband's and two of my son's instant favorites and devoured the whole thing in just a matter of hours.

I am so glad that Selecta Ice Cream is readily available in supermarkets and convenience stores so I got to buy a new tub the very next day when we went grocery shopping. I have to agree that this one, with creamy vanilla ice cream, thick mango ripples, and chunks of graham crackers is definitely the best among the three! I loved how it genuinely reminds me of eating one of those Selecta ice cream cakes we make! (Check out the very simple recipe here.)

This summer, make sure your freezer doesn't run out of nice and cool things to eat and drink. And don't forget to stock up on the Selecta Ice Cream flavor/s you love! Happy food tripping!

Experiencing a Couple of Firsts at Shakey's Color Fun Run

Hubby and I joined Shakey's Color Fun Run the other morning and I became a first-timer when it came to 1) joining a color run, and 2) running along Roxas Boulevard

The moment I saw Shakey's poster announcing the event to celebrate its 40th year anniversary, I sensed it would be fun. And it was! The course for all participants was just 5k so I was confident it won't be hard to finish because that distance, so far, is my comfort zone.

Ready to run!
My husband and I arrived in Shakey's Raja Sulayman, Malate branch before 5AM and got our race kits which included the bib, a white quick dry shirt, and goggles. Gun start was at 6AM and we joined hundreds of runners going to the U-turn at Buendia overpass.

I quite regretted telling hubby to go ahead of me like I always do during our practice runs (since he runs faster and doesn't walk) because I passed by couples and groups of friends who would stop and take selfies along the road. Since there's no time chip on the bibs, I guess there's no point about beating any personal records this time. Thankfully, a photographer friend of ours was there and got several shots of us while running.

There were people stationed along the route who threw colored powders on the runners. Eventually, the powder, when mixed with sweat, turned our shirts and skin like tie-dyed cloths. I didn't know how colorful I looked, especially my face (!), when I reached the finish line after 40 minutes or so. I only realized how much the "devastation" was when I looked closely at this couple selfie we took at the photo wall.

the "homeless" look :p
Still, despite the "taong grasa" peg, I enjoyed the experience. As a bonus, I got another finisher's medal! And that's my second in less than a week! (Read the story about how I earned the first one, here).

Yey! My second 5k finisher's medal!
After the run, we had a hearty breakfast at Shakey's and I opted for mushroom soup, pasta, and a glass of refreshing lemon cucumber juice. That was a great treat for waking up very early!

Breakfast at Shakey's
The Shakey's Color Fun Run is the brand's way of giving thanks to the Filipino family and of celebrating Good Times and Great Memories for the past 40 years. Now, I have new Shakey's memories to add to my list! :)

NELTEX Pipe Lining Sustainability: Offering Solutions to Major Pipeline Problems

$

Did you know, pipes only comprise 3% of the total cost of a building or a house? And because they are mostly hidden, they sometimes become the most neglected. That is, until a leak happens.

a creatively designed "glass" house that unhides all pipes
These days, climate change and urbanization are affecting the pipeline industry more and more. In the Philippines, typhoons averaging 20 times a year with storm surges causing heavy flooding in thoroughfares are putting undue pressure on water and electrical pipes. In addition, a burgeoning population means environmental wastes passing through sewers at accelerated speeds. Imagine the health risks if wastewater seeps through pipes that deliver water to households!

Outside, the endless road constructions, pipe laying, and repairs that cause heavy traffic have seemingly become part of our daily lives. We also see skyscrapers and more houses being built almost everywhere we look. With all these constructions going on, pipe manufacturing companies are expected to come up with precise state-of-the-art, durable, and reliable products that are 100% leak-free and yet environmentally-friendly and health-safe.

different colored pipes for different uses
According to Gladys Joy Avila, NELTEX Brand Officer, all of us are affected by flooding, non-revenue water losses, and power interruptions, which can actually be solved "just by using the right piping materials."

This year, Avila shares that NELTEX Development Corporation, known to make the toughest pipes in the industry, is shifting to become a more socially responsible company. "Instead of just offering products, we want to be known as a business entity with a purpose," she explains. "So we're offering sustainable solutions that would solve or address common problems in the Philippines."

main water lines should not leak because system losses are passed on to us, consumers!
For instance, leakage caused by poor jointing and loose gasket results to non-revenue water and system loss that is passed on to consumers of water concessionaires. This kind of leak is often caused by improper pipe fitting due to conventional installation and human error. "We innovated the technology to make our system 100% leak free by offering the PVC NELTEX Pressureline Pipe with machine-installed fixed seal solution that leaves zero gap and no margin for error," describes Avila. She assures that using this pipe system will help avoid frequent digging just to find leaks.

Likewise, major infrastructures built decades ago have pipes that are prone to leaks because they can no longer adapt to climate and environmental changes. Reinforced concrete pipes get corroded by the hydrogen sulfide present in wastewater so they should already be changed to chemically-resistant PVC pipes.

pipes where wastewater pass through should be chemically-resistant
Avila reveals that road constructions are often slowed down due to pipe laying of reinforced concrete pipes, which are only one meter in length, are very heavy, and requires changing every two years due to corrosion. Jointing them is tedious and could be inaccurate thus the improbability of forming long, straight pipes. When concrete pipes are not jointed properly, water will not flow as fast and as smoothly and clogging may occur.

"We are offering a solution with the PVC NELTEX Sewerguard Pipe with Sewerlock Seal. It is flexible, lightweight, and six meters long," says Avila. Unlike concrete pipes that need plastering of cement and requires time to dry, NELTEX's pipes ensure fast installation and less jointing.

electrical pipes are colored orange
With urbanization, it is ideal that electrical cables be installed underground. But, in a flood-prone country, electrical pipes should be highly durable, non-corrosive, water tight, and airtight. NELTEX meets these requirements with its impact modified PVC Powerguard Pipes joined together by means of a fixed seal technology called Powerlock that ensure the pipes to be 100% waterproof and airtight.

This goes for any house. Whether it's pipe for water, electricity, or wastewater, it pays to install high quality, albeit somewhat expensive, products that won't give you headaches in the long run. According to Avila, if you use NELTEX for both the outside and inside of a building, your piping system will not have a problem for at least 50 years.

paying attention to pipe installation at the beginning means less leak problems years later
"We use high grade resin, impact modifier, and calcium carbonate. Some manufacturers use more calcium carbonate, which is a filler, in making their products. Thus, their pipes easily break even you step on them," she points out.

I asked her what stress tests they subjected their pipes to. "The standard is 80-50, ours is 80-55 meaning 80 megapascals and 55 impact. We did a Hataw Challenge last year using a hammer and our pipes were just flattened. They didn't shatter." They also had a vehicle run over the pipes and had the same result. "That's the easiest demonstration to show how tough NELTEX pipes are."

ideally, storm drains should be separated from sewer lines
because treating storm water would be easier and faster
Unfortunately, the reality at the moment is that government projects are usually awarded to the lowest bidders and it's us, the taxpayers, who don't get the quality of services that we deserve. "If pipes get repaired over and over, that's cost to end-users. If, from the start, you used pipes guaranteed to last for a long time, the expenses will be much lesser," rationalizes Avila.

One other notable thing about NELTEX pipes that you should know is that they are Heavy Metal Free (HMF) Certified. "Heavy metals, including lead content, can have harmful effects on people," states Avila. "So we eliminated those substances, not only from our water pipes, but also from our sanitary and electrical pipes because we are also protecting the workers who handle them."

NELTEX pipes are 100% government standard compliant
"NELTEX is known to be the benchmark in the industry. By using our pipes, you can be assured that your system is 100% compliant to government standards," she ends.

Worth Discovering: Pandin Lake in San Pablo City, Laguna, Philippines

The Philippines is filled with a lot of hidden gems when it comes to beautiful destinations. Sometime last year, my husband and I toured San Pablo City, Laguna in one day to visit all of its seven lakes for an article I was writing for Experience Travel and Living magazine.

it's more fun at Pandin lake the second time around!
Among the seven bodies of water, it was Pandin Lake that made the most impression on us because there are a lot of enjoyable stuff one can do there. At the time, since we were working, we didn't get to enjoy everything the place has to offer but planned to go back soon with the family.

bird on the fish pens
Three days ago, my sister texted me if I'd like to go with her to San Pablo to meet up with our first cousin who's in town from the U.S. and who's about to leave again in a few days. She wanted to go to Pandin Lake to have lunch. I thought it would be a great idea to tag two of my boys along since they don't have classes anymore.

almost there!
And so the "biglaang lakad" pushed through the next day. The night before, I called Ms. Tina Tolentino, the president of Pandin's Bangkeras Association to reserve lunch. This is necessary because they usually can't accommodate food requests from walk in guests. I am glad to have known this from my previous visit.

lunch in the middle of the lake
We arrived at the parking area past 12NN and it took us about 10-15 minutes' walk (we had to wait for our mom to catch up) to get to the lake. My niece and my sons energetically walked in front of us and soon reached the elevated area where you'll get the first glimpse of the lake.

Pandin Lake food -- yum!
The locals there are very friendly. They led us to a "balsa" (a flat boat made of bamboo trunks) where we were served a simple but hearty lunch of inihaw na tilapia, ginataang maliliit na hipon, and ensaladang pako. After several minutes of picture-taking, we ate lunch while two bankeras pulled the balsa, using guide ropes, towards the balete tree on the other side of the lake.

bangkera
They "parked" the balsa and the kids excitedly took turns swinging on the U-shaped "baging". Too bad we weren't able to take a video of them swinging then launching themselves on the water because another group of tourists arrived and whose balsa had to be parked next to ours. Still, the kids and I enjoyed the cool waters of the lake. I had no fears of any untoward incidents as we were all required to wear life vests.

cousins having fun
Before our two hours is up (yes, there's a time limit for staying; I guess to give way to others), I requested our bankeras to take us to the pathway leading up to Yambo Lake. We climbed the steep trail and was rewarded with another breathtaking view that's just on the other side of the hill.

path going up to Yambo Lake
We went back to the Pandin side and were brought to shore again where we ate our pre-ordered halo-halo. We stayed on our balsa for about half an hour more before packing up to make the long walk back to the van. Overall, it is a very nice experience that was made more special because we were there with family.

overlooking Yambo Lake
I'd love to go back again before summer ends when hubby and our eldest son are available so they can also enjoy all that Pandin Lake has to offer. This is definitely one place adventurous souls have to visit at least once in their lives.

me and my niece
How to get there: San Pablo City is around an hour and a half's drive from Alabang. Once you see the huge cathedral, take the road on its left side (if facing the church) going towards the towns of Rizal, Nagcarlan, and Liliw. In about 10-15 minutes, you'll see a big sign (with a politician's face) on the left welcoming visitors to Pandin Lake. Park on the vacant lot and ask the locals for directions. There are kids there who offer themselves as guides.

Fees: P360 per person for reserved lunch with balsa ride, P50 parking fee, P5 to use the bathroom (no piped running water though so don't expect to find a shower area).

Defy Age with RADIESSE, The Lifting Filler

Many women (and even some men I know) would like to stay young-looking as long as possible. This is affirmed by history because people have been, and still are, trying to preserve their youthful appearances as I write. However, as we grow older, skin will eventually sag, cheeks will sink, and wrinkles will deepen.

Factors such as diet and nutrition, constant exposure to the sun, and genetics, among others contribute to how slow or how fast our skin ages. And while it is true that we can't turn back the hands of time as youthful looks fade, experts say that there's a way to defy aging

what happens when we age

A few days ago, Merz Aesthetics introduced RADIESSE, the filler of choice by board certified doctors, for natural results and a youthful look. This injectable implant is FDA-approved for sub dermal implantation for the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds.

panel of experts
According to plastic surgeons and dermatologists present during the press launch, the gel-like component in RADIESSE blends with the natural collagen of the face thereby adding volume, triggering an instant natural effect, and producing long-term results.

After the treatment, patients will experience an immediate lift -- there will be no more wrinkles and lines as they will be replaced instead by firm and supple skin. You can enjoy the change for a couple of years or more, depending on how your skin responds as individual results may vary.

RADIESSE formulation
Anyone who wishes to achieve a naturally ageless look is highly encouraged to consult a board certified doctor about RADIESSE. Please don't jeopardize your skin and your health by agreeing to get beauty injections from just anyone who offers you cheap (and possibly fake) solutions as you might deeply regret it later! Take note also that RADIESSE is not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women as well as patients who are less than 18 years old.

RADIESSE
To date, RADIESSE has already helped defy aging in thousands of women worldwide. According to scientific studies and publications, it is not only proven effective by clinical trials, it is also confirmed to be safe and well tolerated when administered properly.

Agoda.com Study Reveals Countries with Most Handicapped Accessible Hotels

For families with a handicapped member, like ours, traveling with a loved one who has special needs can be a complicated thing. You really need to plan it really well because it's not easy to lug along a wheelchair / stroller / car seat everywhere. You have to meticulously choose places that are accessible to contraptions on wheels because having carrying a heavy child (or adult) up a flight of stairs often can take the fun out of a supposedly relaxing vacation.

Amora Jamison Hotel, Sydney, Australia

Thankfully, we can now just go online and check about accessibility options in places you're planning to visit. Here's a quick guide that could help you decide on your next family trip destinations.

Last March 27, Agoda.com, one of Asia’s leading hotel booking sites and part of Nasdaq-listed Priceline Group (Nasdaq:PCLN), announced the results of its most recent Travel Smarts study, which shows the United States as having the highest percentage of handicapped accessible hotels.

The study looked at information provided by more than 600,000 hotels available for online booking on Agoda.com. Hotels in the United States are by far the most accessible, with 77% offering facilities for guests with disabilities.* Tied for a distant second are the United Arab Emirates, Ireland, and Portugal, where 55% of hotels in each of those countries also offer facilities for guests with disabilities.

John Brown, Chief Operating Officer shared, "We are pleased to see so many hotels offering facilities for guests with disabilities since making travel more accessible is what Agoda.com is all about."

Local laws and regulations, the type of visitors who come to the destination, and the age of most accommodations are some of the many factors that influence whether hotels will have accessible facilities. The United Arab Emirates, for example, has seen a more than decade-long building boom resulting in many newly-built hotels, which are more likely to be accessible. In the capital, Abu Dhabi, 90% of the hotels have handicapped facilities.

Miura Hotel in Czech Republic
According to the study, pilgrimage destinations also tended to have higher accessibility rates. For instance, more than 60% of hotels in Fatima, Portugal; Huelva province in Spain; and Lourdes, France reported that they have facilities for disabled guests.

Unfortunately, no Asian countries made it to the top 10 list. Singapore was the highest ranking Asian country, coming in 18th place overall with 40% of its hotels on Agoda.com offering facilities for guests with disabilities. Other countries in Asia didn’t fare well. Five of the ten destinations at the bottom of the list were in this region. As for the Philippines, only 15% of its properties with Agoda.com have this service.

Fight Before Mosquitoes Bite with NEW MozzStop Mosquito Ovicide and Larvicide

$

In 2014, according to the World Health Organization website, a total of 59,943 dengue cases were reported from January 1 to September 6 by the National Epidemiology Center of the Philippines’ Department of Health. Unfortunately, majority of the infected patients were aged five to 14 with a total of 242 deaths recorded, most of whom were children.

Dengue, and other mosquito-borne diseases, continues to affect thousands of Filipinos every year. Thus, we should really find ways to avoid getting bitten by infected mosquitoes.

Last month, I opened a pack of MozzStop Mosquito Ovicide and Larvicide to see for myself how it works. One sealed pack contains two black plastic jars, two MozzStop sachets, and two flat wooden sticks.

opened MozzStop kit

MozzStop is an FDA-approved mosquito control product made of natural ingredients (black pepper and rice hull ash), which can control the growth of dengue-carrying mosquitoes by killing mosquito eggs and larvae.

It works by: 1) attracting mosquitoes into the container, 2) trapping mosquitoes and killing both its eggs and wrigglers, and 3) lasting for 21 days by keeping mosquitoes at bay and preventing its population from growing. There are small stickers in the packet where you can write the end date of the 21 days and attach outside the jar so you’ll remember when it’s time to replace the mixture.

sticker reminder
Setting up the MozzStop system is easy. Just fill the black jar with 250ml water then empty the contents of one sachet into it. Add more water if the liquid evaporates before 21 days are up. Immerse the wooden stick into the water. This is where mosquitoes will latch onto the stick and lay their eggs.

I placed one container in one corner of the entertainment center in our living room and another container under the computer desk in my kids’ room. Although all our doors and windows are covered with screens, mosquitoes still get inside somehow, so we do get itchy bite marks on our arms and legs once in a while.

setting up the MozzStop system
I had to refill the water after a couple of weeks as the summer heat made it evaporate quickly. After 21 days, I poured out the remaining contents of one jar in a clear container. I couldn’t quite verify if there were mosquito eggs and dead wrigglers there though.

I also didn’t actually see mosquitoes coming near the jars during the time they were stationed in our living room and the boys’ room. However, we did notice that the number of times we seem to get bitten by mosquitoes became much lesser, which means less instances too of resorting to using the pungent-smelling mosquito sprays or coils. I've yet to try using MozzStop in areas outside our house, like the front porch and laundry area, but plan to do so, soon.

what the mixture looks like after 21 days
If you have problems with mosquitoes, MozzStop is a safe alternative that you might want to try, especially if you have young kids in the house you wouldn’t want inhaling toxic fumes from any insect sprays.

MozzStop is available at Mercury Drug, Pioneer, and Handyman outlets nationwide. It costs P120/kit and P45/sachet. For more information and other updates, please like MozzStop on Facebook.

Dalanghita Productions'"Kung Paano Ako Naging Leading Lady The Musical" is Set to Open on May 7, 2015

Anybody who loves a great story would definitely find Kung Paano Ako Naging Lady very entertaining. After all, this original Filipino musical combines comedy, drama, romance, action, deception, confessions, superheroes, supervillains, a family, and a maid!

I got to see and hear excerpts of the production yesterday and some of the lyrics and dialogues are the kind that will figuratively have you rolling on the floor laughing. I can't wait to watch the whole show next month!

Dalanghita Productions, Manila's newest theater group, in cooperation with the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA), proudly presents a fantastic production based on Carlo Vergara's one-act play and graphic novel entitled Kung Paano Ako Naging Leading Lady.

Love triangle
This musical revolves around the story of two sisters, Mely and Viva, who both yearn to fulfill their dreams. Like most siblings, they have their share of a rivalry that was made more complicated by an unsettled past and a budding romance, all in the context of an ongoing war between the superhero and supervillain teams.

Mely, who lands a job as a maid under a group of superheroes, has to step up to unique challenges for the sake of her family. Aside from her story, the musical will take audiences through the journey of the characters who are all trying to find their individual places in a world where superheroes and supervillains exist.

Artistic team
If you got to watch the massively successful Zsazsa Zaturnnah ze Muzikal, which had multiple stage runs, you'll be happy to know that KPANLL's artistic team is composed of Carlo Vergara (creator of Zsazsa Zaturnnah) whose story will be set to music by Vincent de Jesus (Himala the Musical, Batang Rizal, Juan Tamad), and brought to life by director Chris Martinez (I Do Bidoo Bidoo, Kimmy Dora, Temptation Island … Live!). Powerhouse team, right?

But there's more! The cast of KPANLL is also very impressive because it boasts of some of the most talented and highly-respected artists coming from the theater, television, and film industry. Menchu Lauchengco Yulo plays Madre De Dios - leader of Puwersa Pilipinas; Bituin Escalante and Frenchie Dy alternate as Mely - maid of Puwersa Pilipinas, Kim Molina and Natasha Cabrera alternate as Viva - Mely's younger sister; and Markki Stroem and Hans Eckstein alternate as Leading Man - the newest member of Puwersa Pilipinas.

But Why Me? (Love this song!)
Lending support are multi-faceted actors from Manila's different theater companies namely May Bayot (Nanay - Mely and Viva's mother), Astarte Abraham (Madre De Dios alternate), Giannina Ocampo (Nena Babushka), Caisa Borromeo (Windang Woman), Chesko Rodriguez (Popoy Pusakal), Jeff Flores (Bazooka Man), Nar Cabico and Domi Espejo (alternating as Senyor Blangko - leader of Kayumanggilas), Red Nuestro (Marakas Marko), Red Concepcion (Itak-Atak), Elliot Eustacio (Jeryc Sans Rival), and Vince Lim and Mikoy Morales (alternating as Henyotik).

The ensemble is composed of Kakki Teodoro, Raflesia Bravo, Gab Pangilinan, JC Santos, Brian Sy, Rhenwyn Gabalonzo, Alejandro Santos, and Joshua Cabiladas.

Viva's song
The artistic and creative teams include Carlo Vergara (Creator and Writer), Vincent de Jesus (Musical Director and Composer), Chris Martinez (Director), Tuxqs Rutaquio (Production Designer), Lambert de Jesus (Technical Director), John Batalla (Lighting Designer), Nancy Crowe (Chroreographer), Mara Marasigan (Assistant Director), and Ejay Yatco (Assistant Musical Director).

The production team is composed of Ansis Aldrich Tan Sy, Pertee Briñas, and Claudia Fernandez (Producers), Jerome Aytona (Stage Manager), Mariko Yasuda (Production Manager), Gee Pelaria and RJ Deniega (Assistant Stage Managers), Toots Tolentino (Publicist), Kristin Bonifacio, Chuckie Campos Juan, Oskie King, Juan Lorenzo Marco, Guio Martinez, Phillippe Palmos, Celina Peñaflorida, and Juan Miguel Severo (Sales and Marketing), Prodbook PH (Social Media Manager), and Chester Ng (Photography).

The SM Store Holds First Successful Ladies Night at SM Makati

It is hard to resist shopping for clothes made by trusted brands especially when they are offered at half the price. Last year, I bought two dresses and one top from SM Woman several days after it was launched during Philippine Fashion Week (I wrote about it for A&B magazine) because I really love the designs and so many of the stuff I tried on fit me perfectly. Imagine how hard it was for me to choose which ones to buy!

Coco Cabana swimwear
Early last week, The SM Store announced that they'll be having its first Ladies Night on April 15 and will be slashing prices at 50% off of SM Woman, GTW by SM, Coco Cabana, and Gigi Amore, among others. Like many of my female friends, I was eager to see what nice items we could get a low prices.

lots of Frozen items!
I wasn't disappointed. The sale went beyond my expectations because I want to look for certain outfits I've been wanting to have, such as a rush guard, a new bathing suit for this summer, comfortable sleepwear (a.k.a. hotel-worthy hahaha) that I can bring when I travel, and pretty underwear (Gigi Amore has some of the nicest and affordable matching pieces I know). Happily, I found them all in one place!

Gigi Amore - one of my favorite underwear brands
The sale was slated only from 6 to 9PM and it was CHAOTIC! SM Makati's third and fourth floors had swarms of women grabbing great items with unbelievable prices. My friend and namesake Ruth and I maximized the time to search for good finds and we ended up with more than a dozen items each in our carts. We barely made it to the cashiers in time for store closing despite the time extension to 9:30PM.

shopping frenzy for lots of good bargains
What's more, we got bonus cash coupons! For every P1000 and up purchase, you can claim P100; for every P2500 and up receipt, you get P300; but if you go beyond P5000, you'll be rewarded with P700 worth of coupons that can be used like cash for succeeding purchases! Awesome!

shop and earn!
It was funny that even after paying for our items, we couldn't help but stop and check out more racks where we saw more pretty outfits we'd love to wear. That's how addicting Ladies Night was! Here's sharing a photo of me wearing one of my Ladies Night finds, which I wore in Siquijor during this weekend's trip. Sorry, I'm too shy to post a photo of the bathing suit though :)

wearing Snooze by SM Woman
If you're disappointed at not being able to make it to that sale, don't worry! There will be several more Ladies Nights in the next Wednesdays to come. Just stay tuned for updates in what SM Store branches they'll be held by liking The SM Store on Facebook.

Cebu Pacific's Juan for Fun Backpacker Challenge is Back!

Traveling is one of the most exciting things you should do while you're young and physically capable to take on one adventure after the other. Previous participants and winners of Cebu Pacific's Juan for Fun Backpacker Challenge can definitely attest to that.

#JuanForFun2015
This past weekend, I met four young people whose adventurous spirits led them to audition, get accepted, and go to exciting destinations for several days -- for FREE! These Juan for Fun alumni shared how much they enjoyed their trips and sharpened many of their skills.

Esme, Mara, Gian, and Patrik may have come from different teams and JFF editions but they have at least two things in common -- a zest for life and the desire to discover new things through traveling. Fortunately, Cebu Pacific came up with a unique and exciting travel adventure program for college and university students like them.

JFF alumni: (from left) Esme, Mara, Gian, and Patrik
Now on its fourth year, the Juan for Fun Backpacker Challenge 2015 is once more inviting students residing in the Philippines, aged 18 to 23 years old, who are raring to go on a one-of-a-kind journey. Grab this chance to go backpacking across Cebu Pacific destinations for eight days without shelling out a cent!

Interested participants just have to form a team of three and show their most creative and competitive side via an audition video where they have to answer this question: "What makes you the team to beat in this year's Juan for Fun"? You have until May 2, 2015 to upload your entries through www.juanforfun.com. Three finalists with the most awesome videos will be automatically included in the challenge. Two more will get to be in the top five after getting the most online votes between May 16 to May 20.

JFF 2014 teams in Kuala Lumpur
The five teams will then discover their destinations during the send-off ceremonies on June 23. All they need to bring are their passports, basic budgeting know-how, an extra dose of adrenaline, and their backpacks.

Wherever Juan for Fun 2015 takes them from June 23 to July 1, the teams are expected to have as many fun and exciting activities using the travel allowance they are given. They must also complete special tasks that await them in select shops to earn more points and win special prizes.

JFF 2014 teams in Camiguin
As if all these were not exciting enough, there teams are very lucky to be sharing their journeys with Adventure Coaches, who are actually popular Philippine personalities known to be insatiable travelers themselves. The coaches will guide each team through social media as they make their way from one destination to another.

What are the prizes, you ask? Well, this year's Juan for Fun Ultimate Backpackers will receive 12 roundtrip tickets to any local or international destinations of their choice as well as other premium travel gear!

JFF Seasons 1, 2, and 3 teams from Cebu
Candice Iyog, Cebu Pacific Vice President for Marketing and Distribution, shared that every year, they get inspired by the enthusiasm, resourcefulness, and energy of the student teams who audition. "We look forward to watching their videos, and taking them on an adventure that can start a lifetime of adventures."

Last year, Team Tuklas composed of Floyd Patricio, Esme Escoto, and Gab Saplagio from the University of the Philippines Diliman outplayed four other teams and bagged the top spot in JFF Year 3. The three navigated their way through Manila, Kuala Lumpur, Bacolod, Cebu, Camiguin, and Cagayan de Oro during a nine-day, seven city challenge.

I love traveling and discovering new places. If I have the time and the budget, I'd do it as often as I could, while I can! I believe this is also how Cebu Pacific's Juan for Fun Backpacker Challenge 2015 Adventure Coaches feel, too, as they are all enthusiastic travelers who enjoy having adventures anywhere they go.

Champ, Jude, Joyce, Iya, and Bogart
These certified adventure seekers signed up for JFF 2015 to serve as mentors to five student teams who will be going on an all-expenses-paid trip across Cebu Pacific's extensive network of destinations. The coaches will be staying in touch and cheering for their respective teams through social media throughout the whole duration of the eight-day backpacker challenge happening from June 23 to July 1.

All five Adventure Coaches expressed excitement at being part of Juan for Fun and are looking forward to meeting their teams soon. Here, they share some tips and pointers to aspiring participants so they could make their experiences even more memorable.

The very entertaining Bogart the Explorer, whose online videos never fail to make people laugh, returns as an adventure coach for the second year. He affirmed that the competition is a great way for students to excel and find out what they are capable of. "They also get the opportunity to learn something about the places they visit, enabling them to view that destination from a unique perspective," he pointed out.

A second returning adventure coach is educator, writer, and photographer Jude Bacalso, who admitted to being initially intimidated as a mentor. "You are never too sure that you are able to guide the teams to the best of your ability," she disclosed, adding that by the end of the competition, however, it became clear that learning is a two way street. "I was reminded that letting loose and enjoying the moment is just as important as winning. It really is the journey, not the destination."

For singer, TV host, and radio DJ Joyce Pring, being an Adventure Coach is a great way to spread positivity and the joys of adventure. "I always aim to be an ambassador of good vibes and creative growth, and being a part of the Juan for Fun challenge will allow me to do just that," she said. "I feel like I will be a very competitive coach but, at the end of the day, I just want everyone to have fun and experience what it's like to travel to someplace new."

I have to say that Joyce is certainly a trooper because she was one of my teammates during the media and celebrities mini JFF challenge in Siquijor this past weekend. I admired her energy and determination as she joined us in conquering challenge after challenge despite feeling under the weather that day. More about that adventure in another blog post.

Another self-confessed competitive coach is music artist, producer, and restaurant owner Champ Lui Pio, who believes that winning is all about learning how to work as a team while having a great time. "I really like how the Cebu Pacific Juan for Fun challenge mixes fun with adventure," he described. "I look forward to meeting and bonding with the challenge participants, and I really want them to enjoy this experience because traveling, in my opinion, is food for the soul."

Rounding off this year's roster of Adventure Coaches is TV personality and avid traveler Iya Villania-Arellano. "I joined Juan for Fun as a mentor because I think it would be great to be a part of other people's adventures, share my personal experiences, and help them make the most of their journey," she enumerated. "I want my team to challenge themselves by preparing to make some sacrifices and conquering a few fears, all while having fun, of course!"

Learn more about how you can meet and be mentored by these awesome coaches! Read my other blog post, which has more details about the Juan for Fun Backpacker Challenge. Please also log on to www.juanforfun.com and like facebook.com/CebuPacificJFF for more details and to follow the escapades of these adventure coaches and their teams.

I love testing my limits especially when it comes to new challenges. After all, as the saying goes, you only live once so you got to take all opportunities to have fun adventures while you're young and able. So before I get too old to travel, go racing on foot, and join friends in having wacky moments, I will wholeheartedly grab chances as they come to make memories I know I'll treasure in the coming years.

on board Coco Princess
I was glad to find myself in the company of nice bloggers and well-known personalities in the entertainment industry. We traveled via Cebu Pacific Air to Dumaguete where we boarded a ferry to the beautiful island of Siquijor

welcoming committee at Coco Grove Beach Resort
We actually already had a lot of fun on board the Coco Princes, the awesome ferry of Coco Grove Resort, even before we got to our destination. There were lots of great corners and spaces for photo ops which, I think, everyone was able to maximize.

pretty table setting for lunch
Once in Siquijor, we had a delicious lunch, rested for bit, had an orientation about the Juan for Fun 2015 Backpackers Challenge (read other details about it in my other blog post), listened to JFF alumni share their stories, then geared up for the mini challenge they prepared for us.

Team Blue: Marky, me, and Joyce

Members of the media were divided into five teams with one Adventure Coach each (know more about them in another blog post). Travel blogger, Marky Ramone Go, and I became teammates with singer and radio DJ Joyce Pring

Team Orange: Jude Bacalso, Jorge Urquico, and Angelo Garcia
There were lots of running involved in the activities and it made me really glad I was fit enough to keep up. Our first pit stop was in Capilay Spring Park where we had to arrange photos to describe how we arrived in Siquijor.

Team Purple: Bogart the Explorer, Aya Tantiangco, and Jonel Uy
Next, we went to Solangon Beach and had to finish eating local delicacies that were really hard to swallow. Marky was kind enough to eat almost all the sea urchins by himself while Joyce and I tried chewing on puto-like cakes that were really tough to chew. Thankfully, gulping down lots of water helped.

we were not lucky with our shuttle :/
While zooming towards the Century Old Balete Tree, however, we noticed that our shuttle was the slowest of the lot because a couple of teams overtook us despite our urging for our driver to drive faster. That afternoon, I discovered how difficult it is to carry one cup of water if all you can hold are three strings attached to it. Thanks to teamwork, we also finished that challenge fast.

Team Yellow: Aleah Taboclaon, Luigi Almario, and Iya Villania-Arellano
Our painfully slow vehicle was another story though. It came to a point where we leaned back on our seats while the other shuttles started passing us by again and told each other, "Let's just enjoy the experience." That was actually a good reminder to let the good stuff in and forget the setbacks :)

Joyce and Marky putting the puzzle together while I searched for more pieces
The ending? We got in 4th place after trying to piece together puzzle pieces placed beside various flags in the sand at Coco Grove. But all's good. Like I said, we enjoyed what we did and had fun. More than the prizes, that should be the whole point of the challenge, right?

Team Green: Enzo Luna, Champ Lui Pio, and Melo Villareal
