I’ve often heard it said that women should age gracefully and I associate that with taking care of one’s health, including the skin, to delay, if not totally stop, aging. We, ladies, are very fortunate that in our time, there are genuinely effective products that can help us maintain healthy and younger-looking skin.

Scent is a powerful thing. There are certain fragrances from my past that can bring back certain memories in an instant whenever I smell them. Babies, it has been said, know their mother's scent even before they are able to see their moms. It's not surprising then that a simple whiff of something familiar can evoke so much emotion and nostalgia.

As Mother's Day comes nearer, we can't help but go on trips down memory lane and remember precious times with our moms while we were still growing up. More than the familiar sights and sounds, scents play a role in reminding us of moments with Mom -- the mouthwatering aroma of her signature dish, the comforting smell of a baby blankie as she tucks you in at night, and the scent of her favorite perfume that remains on her dress long after she has taken it off.

Celebrating motherhood can be done any time and anywhere as long as we have our family with us. Still, the title of being called "Mom" is most felt when people find time to make the second Sunday of May a really special one by filling it with surprises and fun activities.

That's exactly what Ayala Malls did last week. Manila's premier shopping destination held a thrilling celebration of everything about being mom during Mother's Day and even the days before that.

Ayala Malls prides itself for being the perfect family-friendly place for mom and her loved ones because she can do the grocery, shop for stuff, avail of pampering treatments, and watch live entertainment there.

I was at Market! Market! this past Mother's Day and saw for myself how my fellow moms got to enjoy mini-games and other activities inside the mall. Every hour, names of mommies were announced and they were awarded with gift certificates and other prizes.

In one area, moms got to throw darts at colorful balloons that, once popped, revealed a prize each. I tried the game and won a pouch bag and a shoe bag! There was also a Mommy Crafts Corner where families with young kids got crafty and imaginative with their art creations. A wall was also set up to display little Love Notes for Mom from their sweet children.

I spent most of the afternoon though at Nailaholics Nail Salon & Spa where I had a much-needed manicure and pedicure. The nail technicians who worked on my hands and feet were pretty good. I chose a nice lavender nail polish shade to veer away, for once, from my usual choices that are either beige, blue, or black. Loved the result!

Capping off Mother's Day for many of the mallgoers was a mall show by Kyla who was promoting her new album called Journey. She sang really nice songs and interacted warmly with her many fans.  I look forward to listening to her album at in the coming days.

One of the things women (well, even men) get conscious about is having cellulite. Some try to get rid of these unwanted fats through dieting while others resort to rigorous exercise. However, fats that have accumulated over the years seemed to have settled in for the long run. Think of it as cooking oil or lard that hardened and won't budge despite a lot of shaking.

At Vine Holistic and Medical Aesthetics, Medical Director Dr. Emehly Sevilla-Castillo shared that there are other ways to eliminate cellulite aside from diet and exercise. "We have non-surgical body sculpting treatments that will help you slim down faster," she explained.

People who don't like undergoing surgery or getting injections can avail of various services offered at Vine. Dr. Em had me try their Tri-Shaper treatment that involves three procedures in one session. She said patients can immediately see results from before and after measurements. However, one should complete the recommended number of sessions for best results.

Before we began, Nurse Jean did some diagnostic tests to find out details like my weight and BMI using a high-tech looking gadget. She also took measurements of my upper waist, waist, and hip areas. Their treatment rooms, by the way, are cozy and private.

The first machine used was for LipoCavitation. For 15 minutes, Nurse Jean applied pressure on my tummy area using a wand with a large round end. This, she described, helps break down fat tissues under the skin, which will be naturally eliminated by my body in the next few days.

Next, she brought in a body-toning machine with a lot of cables and flat plates. She placed several on tummy area and secured them using elastic straps with velcro. For several minutes, I felt electric pulses "shaking" my fat cells. The sensations were not unpleasant at all and I was given choices as to the intensity of the pulses I can tolerate.

The last machine was for radio-frequency therapy. This delivered heat on fatty areas using a wand with a flat end. I appreciated how Nurse Jean was quick to move the wand from area to area because I didn't have time to feel too much heat on my tummy.

In less than an hour, based on before and after measurements, I lost a total of 8.5 cm on my upper waist, waist, and hip areas. According to Dr. Em, there are patients who further combine other treatments, such as injections, to hasten their slimming goals. 

The Good Juice

Apart from the Tri-Shaper, I had an opportunity to try a couple of The Good Juice flavors, which Vine recommends as helpful aids to slimming down some more. They taste really good! I wouldn't mind spending one whole day drinking them in place of eating solid foods.

My husband is a barefoot runner so I always get that question if I'll also run barefoot any time soon. My replies were always an adamant "no." I don't think I could endure the heat from the pavements nor the sharp stones that might result in painful cuts.

And yet, I did say "yes" to walking barefoot the other day for a good cause. Last May 21, people all over the world supported TOMS' One Day for Better Days by walking without shoes so that underprivileged kids won't have to. I was glad to be part of this campaign that aims to remind people of the urgent needs of children for proper health and education.

I joined a large group of people, led by popular Filipino tour guide Carlos Celdran, in walking a whole block around Bonifacio High Street at past five in the afternoon. The experience reminded me a bit of walking on warm sand (because the sidewalks have retained the day's heat) although there were tiny pebbles that would appear every now and then that made me wince in discomfort. It was heartbreaking to imagine young kids going through this every day not because they want to, but because they had no other choice :(

Posh. That's the first word that came to mind while I walked towards the elevator that would take me up to Nobu Restaurant. There's a very sophisticated and yet comfortable vibe to Nobu Hotel in City of Dreams Manila that I'm sure a lot of its guests have already felt. After all, one of its admirers happens to be Academy award-winning actor Robert De Niro himself!

Nobu features a modern, Japanese-inspired aesthetic that, I heard, is found throughout the hotel making the 321-room trendsetting boutique hotel a fun-luxury experience. Unfortunately, I haven't had the chance to take a peek into one of its rooms yet.

Still, I had the privilege of having breakfast last Saturday at the hotel's restaurant, a contemporary fine dining venue that can accommodate 335 guests. It has two private dining rooms, a sushi bar, floating water cabanas, two Teppanyaki tables, and a Chef's Table.

When you do dine there, make sure to try a little of everything because all the dishes I've tried were really delicious. Go for Nobu breakfast specialties prepared by Chef Zachary Hillberry such as the Yuzu Soba Pancakes, Eggs Matshuhisa, Bagel and Lox, Breakfast Tobanyaki, Salmon and Egg Donburi, and my favorite Green Tea Waffles that are topped with raspberries and walnuts. Really yummy!

Oh, but don't ever, ever miss asking for the French Toast because this would probably the very first time you'll get to eat one that practically melts in your mouth! It … is … that … good!

We ate in one of the private rooms that has floor to ceiling glass walls overlooking the swimming pool and lovely cabanas. Even if sudden rain poured outside, it didn't diminish our beautiful view. The next time I'm there, I'd love to dine in one of those cozy alcoves along the main hallway.

Dining at Nobu is a pleasant experience because the staff are very friendly. We also got to meet Mr. Marlon Hirsh, the General Manager of Nobu Hotel.

Even if you are not staying overnight, walk-in guests are welcome for breakfast and dinner. Nobu Restaurant is open from 6AM to 10AM on weekdays; until 11AM on weekends; and from 6PM to 11PM every day.

Filipinos love food. And while we do enjoy exploring the tastes of other countries' cuisines, we always find ourselves craving for what our palates grew up with. I am so glad to have the opportunity to have lunch at Lola Maria Restaurant at The Legend Villas last weekend because this place serves Filipino cuisine ala Fiesta style with that "lutong bahay" touch that is rare in many restaurants today.

Because I wanted something warm in my tummy, I zeroed first in on the delicious Sinigang na Manok. I'm not sure if this was the first time I actually ate sinigang with chicken meat as we always use pork at home when cooking, but I very much enjoyed this one.

I've been to Malaysia a few times in the past and have always enjoyed my stay because there are a lot of activities to do and beautiful sights to see. This year, Tourism Malaysia marks 2015 as the Year of Festivals with the theme "Endless Celebrations."

Likewise, Tourism Malaysia-Manila launches the BFF or Be Friends Forever campaign that aims to let others know what to expect when they go to Malaysia through the experiences of those who have already been there. 

Travelers who visited the beautiful country are encouraged to post their favorite vacation photos on Facebook and Instagram using the hashtag #mybffxoxo for a chance to win special monthly prizes from Tourism Malaysia and the grand prize of a three days and two nights stay in Malaysia accompanied by his or her best friend (or family member).

Yesterday at the Fairmont Hotel in Makati City, His Honorable Dató Mirza Mohammad Taiyab, Director General of Tourism Malaysia, shared, "For MyFest 2015, we aim to have 29.4 million tourist arrivals and RM89 billion in tourist receipts, leading up to our ultimate goal of 36 million tourists and RM168 billion in tourist receipts by 2020." He added that this is part of his government's National Blue Ocean Strategy to create value innovation through public-private partnership collaboration. 

"To that end, I would like to invite all of you to work with each other and develop new tourism products and packages that will highlight our culture, and promote it as a tourist attraction to the rest of the world," His Excellency encouraged local travel agents and airline companies who were present during the event.

"We have always believed that traveling builds more than just character and life experiences," continued Dató Mirza, "In an eventful place such as Malaysia, you can also build lasting memories that you will cherish forever especially if built with close friends and family. In this endless celebrations theme lies a call for people to take these with them long after they have returned home."

BFF, after all, effectively mirrors the bonds that were built, the fun and adventures shared, and lasting memories created from traveling with one's best friends. Tourism Malaysia is positioning itself as a best friend as well to its visitors to cater to their needs and help create the best memories.

The campaign further wishes to imbibe the feeling that Malaysia remains to be a destination of choice for families and friends who are looking for a very enjoyable vacation. Dató Mirza pointed out, "This special campaign, inspired by Filipinos' love affair with selfies and picture taking, focuses on not just keeping, but on sharing these lasting memories captured digitally and immortalized on social media."

I appreciated most what he said next, "In as much as I would love to think that all of us here are BFFs, I want to let all Filipinos, who have at least travelled once to Malaysia, know that we consider all of them, and the future generations of countless Filipinos who will take time out to visit my beloved Malaysia, as our best friends forever and my hugs and kisses go out to all of them."

I can no longer remember what year our son with special needs got hooked on Hi-5. But I recall how we'd play the group's CDs over and over, every day, for months. We loved the original cast composed of Kathleen (a Filipina), Kellie, Charli, Tim, and Nathan. Expectedly, even my husband and I learned to sing most of their songs.

Our James continued to love Hi-5 through the years. When the group had a show in SM Aura in 2013, we brought him there to see the new cast. Despite his not being able to talk, my son shows how much he appreciates listening to the upbeat songs and watching the dances by laughing out loud and staring at the TV screen with bright and happy eyes.

This 2015, a more exciting and fun-filled learning experience awaits kids and their parents because TV5 has just launched Hi-5 Philippines, a local version of the award-winning Australian children's edutainment program. The show features an all-Filipino cast and is a first for the series franchise in Asia.

The dynamic new quintet was presented to members of the media last June 11 at the TV5 Media Center in Mandaluyong City. Not surprisingly, they all have extensive backgrounds in performing arts, which would definitely be useful in helping them channel their energies to engage kids in music, imaginative play, social interaction, and developmental growth in fun ways.

Noel Lorenzana, TV5 President and CEO, expressed how excited they are to bring world-class edutainment closer to more Filipino children. "This is our way of not only showcasing world-class Filipino talent but, more importantly, helping shape our country's future generations."

According to Jane Basas, Media 5 Corporation President, they are likewise proud to partner with Hi-5 World in introducing to millions of Filipino kids a local version of the highly interactive show. "We are up to the challenge of producing the show that is at par with global standards."

Hi-5, which was launched in Australia in 1999, rapidly grew in popularity over the years and has already won three Logie Awards for Most Outstanding Children's Program. It has also bagged five ARIA Awards for Best Children's Album and five Australian DVD and Video Industry Awards, among other accolades. Eventually, Hi-5 started expanding its reach by franchising the show across North America, Europe, Australasia, Latin America, and Asia.

This is the first time thought that the Hi-5 franchise assembled an entirely new cast for the localization of the show in Asia. FYI, the Filipino version of the musical group is the ONLY other cast apart from the one in Australia!

The past centuries have seen how the Philippines became a thriving place where cultural exchanges happen. These activities undeniably influenced the Filipino taste and made us always ready to try out diverse and exciting flavors from all over the world.

Japanese classics, for instance, have become such a hit with the Pinoy palate such that the food craze over Tonkatsu, Curry, and Ramen is evident across the country. Now, a new player has come to town and is ready to create a niche in the Philippine food scene.

Tenya from Asakusa, Tokyo

Tenya, a highly popular restaurant that originated in Asakusa, Tokyo is now open to serve Japanese food lovers with authentic Japanese Tendons! It was an eye-opener for me to find out that in Japan, restaurants only serve their own specialties. This means if you want sushi, go to a sushi place, but there won't be any tempura there. You have to go to a place that serves tempura instead to satisfy your cravings.

All-Star Tendon (P325)

In Metro Manila, go to Tenya to get your tendon fix. They serve tasty meals that will please your palate and fill your tummy. Some of my blogger friends and I got to try some of Tenya's offerings recently and had a great time over yummy food and good conversations.

Isobe Cheese (P185)

For starters, we had Isobe Cheese, which is cheddar wrapped in roasted seaweed and tempura fried. This is best eaten hot immediately after arriving on your table. You'll delight in the melted cheese that stretches as you bite! 

All-Star Tempura Teishoku (P430)

I chose my meal from the Teishoku section. This is a Japanese set meal classic that's served with Japanese rice, potato salad, miso soup, tempura sauce, radish, ginger, and pickles. My All Star Tempura Teishoku was beautifully served in a big tray. It has black tiger prawn, squid, salmon, kani stick, small kakiage, green beans, and mushroom. 

Dontare sauce

I love how the succulent and big the tiger prawn was. There's a lot more meat than flour, which made me wish I ordered the other dish that have more of it. Oh, and do try Tenya's signature Dontare sauce (found in a small pot-like container on each table). It's thicker and has a richer taste than the regular tempura sauce. 

a Soba / Udon set

If you think a Teishoku meal is not enough for you, opt for one of the Soba / Udon set meals with noodles. I just have to warn you that it might really get challenging to finish it all if you don't have someone to share it with. 

Fruity Juicy Pops (P75 each)

For dessert, our table ordered one of each flavor of the Fruity Juicy Pop. It comes in Strawberry, Coconut Lychee, Lite Citrus, and Orange Vanilla. I had the coconut lychee and loved it but was told to try the lite citrus next time. Tenya's owner said it's their bestseller because the citrusy flavor helps cleanse the palate after eating.

Aside from Tenya's delicious dishes, I love the restaurant's interior. It has a welcoming and comfortable ambiance that would make you feel at home with friends and family when you dine there. Visit Tenya soon! It's located at the 4th Level of SM Megamall, Building A. Happy eating! :)
